In one of the most unsurprising poll results of all time, Star Wars managed to trounce Mission:Impossible 2 in Monday’s poll. It was so bad for T-Cruise that M:I 2 didn’t even get a vote. Not one! Today, it’s #1 seed E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial vs. dark horse #8 Transformers.

E.T. was the highest-grossing film of all time, remaining so for over a decade before finally ceding the crown to Star Wars after that film’s mid-90s Special edition re-release. Arguably the best Spielberg film of them all (we’ll settle that dispute later in the tournament), E.T. is a touchstone film of the 1980s and one of the most beloved movies of all time. Starring Henry Thomas in what Roger Ebert said “… has to be the best little boy performance I’ve ever seen in an American film,” E.T. is thrilling, funny, exciting and it will make you weep. I promise. It’s funny to think about now, but E.T. was conceived by Spielberg as a movie about divorce. That dude is crazy!

Based on an animated series designed to push a lucrative line of toys, Transformers did huge business at the box office way back in 2007. Personally, I thought it was a steaming pile of shit, but it was beloved enough for a second film (Revenge of the Fallen) to be set for release this month. Truthfully, the producers could easily have doubled their money if they cut out all the robots and fighting, and just spent two hours lingering on Megan Fox bent over a Camero.
