Okay, fairweather Rays fans, your glory days are over. I’m calling you out, because I refuse to suffer alone as I watch my boys go down like a ton a’ bricks. Yeah, the Rays have been utterly disappointing on the heels of their AL championship. Yeah, they’ve got an injury list as big as B.J. Upton’s ego. But what they need to bounce back is your support at the Tampa Bay Rays vs. Kansas City Royals game — not another night in an empty stadium. Ultimate Frisbee may seem like a poor excuse for a “sport,” but that’s only until you try it. Basically, it’s like playing football, with a disc substituting for the ol’ pigskin. Players have to leap, spin and dive to keep the Frisbee out of the hands of the enemy. Bay Area Ultimate organizes pick-up games and tourneys almost every night of the week. Wednesdays are open-play days — so expect to find people who’ve never touched a disc alongside athletes whose feet seemingly never touch the ground during play — sweating it out on the field. For those of you who’d rather watch someone else flail around and sweat for a couple of hours than actually do it yourselves, head to the 1997 show, where the Chicago band heads up an all-ages bill of music with its bouncy blend of emo-tinged power pop.
