Charles Busch comedy at American Stage to raise money for HIV and AIDS services

June 12, 2009 at 11:27 am by Sally Bosco

The Suncoast AIDS Theatre Project is proud to announce its 5th Annual Night of Alternative Theatre, Prelude to Pride, Monday, June 15, at the American Stage Theatre Company.  What better way to celebrate this night than putting on a play by Charles Busch, who wrote the campy classics Psycho Beach Party and Vampire Lesbians of Sodom?  This is guaranteed to be an interesting night.

One of his lesser-known plays, Our Leading Lady is a backstage romp that will feature local favorite Matt McGee as Laura Keene (see photo).  Set in Washington, DC, in 1865, the story revolves around a British-born stage actress whose company is performing at the Ford’s Theatre. The presidential assassination that takes place is not merely a national tragedy but also a vexing interruption in a powerful woman’s quest for fame and glory.  Featured players will be: Joe Parra, T. Scott Wooten, Hersha Parady, Julie Rowe, Matt McGee, Susan O’Gara and others.  All are donating their time and talents for this event.

“It will be sketch comedy in the style of the old Carol Burnett Show where the bloopers are as much fun as the rest of the show,” said Artistic Director Gary Breul.

The worthy beneficiary of the evening is the Aids Service Association of Pinellas (ASAP), which provides services to people living with HIV and AIDS.  The mission of the Suncoast AIDS Theatre Project is to raise awareness, provide assistance, and perpetuate a life of dignity for those affected and infected by HIV and AIDS.

Whether you are coming OUT to celebrate Pride Month or just to enjoy a night of hilarious comedy, join the fun Monday, June 15th, to celebrate while also benefiting a worthy cause.

American Stage is located at: 163 Third Street North, downtown, St. Petersburg.  Tickets are “Pay What You Can.”  A cash bar will be available.  To order tickets call the American Stage Box Office at (727) 823-PLAY.  Doors open at 6:30 with a curtain time of 7:30.  For further information contact the Artistic Director of the Suncoast AIDS Theatre Project, Garry Breul at 941/685-6348 or garallan@msn.com.
