Do It This Weekend: Hogs ‘n’ Dogs, Hello, Dali, NBA VIP bash and more

June 26, 2009 at 12:00 am by Franki Weddington

Get your Fourth of July party started early at Hogs ‘n’ Dogs, where you’ll find a hot dog eating contest, a bike show by the retired firemen of the Red Knights Motorcycle Club, and a red carpet dog show — with prizes for the peppiest pups. Try a cold glass of lemonade to wash down those hotdogs; money raised at Alex’s Lemonade Stand goes to children’s cancer research, while proceeds from the pup pageant benefit the SPCA. The event begins at the intersection of 24th Street and Central Avenue in St. Petersburg, and continues throughout the Grand Central District. 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Sun., June 28, free, grandcentraldistrict.org.

Hello, Dali is a contemporary dance, visual art and musical performance is inspired by Dali’s surrealist paintings. Local composer A. Paul Johnson wrote and recorded the score in response to Dali’s work, and the Fuzion Dance Artists of Sarasota were in turn inspired to create a Dali-esque dance piece. The multi-media performance features projections, lights, costumes and props, and contributions from both local and nationally-recognized dancers and artists. 7:30 p.m. Sat., June 27, 2 p.m. Sun., June 28, Salvador Dalí  Museum, St. Petersburg, $15 adults, $10 students, salvadordalimuseum.org.

The Tarance Kinsey Celebrity all-Star Weekend kicks off with “Comedy’s the Cure,” a stand-up show featuring Joe and Guy Torry, Gary Owen and Doug Williams. Then, the Cloud Nine All White Affair is an evening of elegance and glamor with an NBA All-Star guest list, including LeBron James, Mo Williams, Joe Smith, Rudy Gay and more. Proceeds benefit the Pediatric Cancer Foundation. Comedy’s the Cure, 8-10 p.m. Fri., June 26; Cloud Nine, 10 p.m.-3 a.m. Sat., June 27, Hyatt Regency Downtown, 211 N. Tampa St., Tampa, Comedy’s the Cure, $25 general, $40 VIP; Cloud Nine, $20 general, $100 VIP red carpet entrance, tkallstars.com.

There’s something for everyone after the break:

Hit the road with the frontman of Squeeze in Glenn Tilbrook: One for the Road, where Tilbrook brings fans along on his solo tour via video-doc. Then, local musicians Pam and Danny Rubenstein, Ted Lukas, Ed Woltil and Lance Rowland take the stage to cover classic Squeeze tracks. Proceeds benefit WMNF.8 p.m. Sat., June 27, Beach Theatre, 315 Corey Ave., St. Pete Beach, $7, beachtheatre.com, glennmovie.com.

No, you don’t get to roll Fido down the lane to see how many pins he can knock down at the Pet Bowl-A-Thon — but this annual fundraiser benefits more than 15,000 of his furry friends who visit our local SPCA. Each five-person team gets three rounds of bowling, t-shirts, lunch and a team photo. Once you’ve registered, you’ll have access to the online Pet Bowl Participant Center, where you can create a webpage to spread the word about this great cause. Noon, Sat., June 27, Seminole Lanes, 8668 Park Blvd., Seminole, spcatampabay.org.

RL Productions presents Lorraine Hansberry’s classic drama, A Raisin in the Sun. The play — Broadway’s first ever to be both produced and written by African-Americans — follows the Younger family, who must decide how to invest a recent financial windfall. Their decision will create immeasurable ripple effects for the family’s future generations. Originally starring Sidney Poitier, and with a recent revival showcasing brilliant acting by Phylicia Rashad, Sanaa Lathan and Sean Combs, the show is no stranger to talent. RL Productions, helmed by local director Rory Lawrence, is committed to “opening doors for actors seeking exposure and ready to take their careers to the next level,” and promises to deliver poignant performances in this intense, intimate look at a family struggling against racism, poverty and broken dreams in 1950s Brooklyn. Like the Langston Hughes poem that inspired the title, the story is relevant for modern audiences while speaking to the historic struggle of America’s African-American community. June 27-28, 7:30 p.m. Sat., 3:30 p.m. Sun., Masque Community Theater, 8825 N. 56th St., Tampa, $15, rqlproductions.com. — Franki Weddington

The Music in the Marly Room summer music series continues with David Burgess, who has studied various styles and traditions of guitar around the world. He performs selections from Brazilian composers including Ernesto Nazareth, João Pernambuco, Pixinguinha, Radamés Gnattali, Luiz Bonfá and Antonio Carlos Jobim. Burgess participates in a meet and greet with the audience after his performance. 2 p.m. Sun., June 28, Museum of Fine Arts, 255 Beach Drive N.E., St. Petersburg, $20, $10 students, 727-896-2667, fine-arts.org.

Flamenco Puro is a celebration of Hispanic culture includes Flamenco dancing accompanied by a live band. Choreographer Clarita Filgueiras also leads a workshop on the art of Flamenco. 3 p.m. workshop, 7 p.m performance, Sun., June 28, Tarpon Springs Performing Arts Center, 324 Pine St., Tarpon Springs, $10 workshop, $15 performance, $20 combo ticket, 727-942-5605, tarponarts.org.
