Kevin’s Korner – Week 3 – Harry vs. rodents, Twilight, Bryce Dallas Howard and more!

Welcome back to another edition of Kevin’s Korner, where I wrap up all the big movie news into one neat package (sorry, no bow). After last weekends Comic-Con, there is plenty of news, trailers and rumors running around, so I’ll address a few. Also, Harry Potter got beat down by some rodents. Who would’ve predicted that?

MOVIE NEWS

AVATAR STUNS: James Cameron’s new project, Avatar, is supposed to be a true innovation in movie-making, and the reports coming from San Diego Comic-Con suggested it’s like nothing we’ve ever seen before. For those of us outside Southern California, Cameron declared August 21 “Avatar Day,” with the studio screening 25 minutes of 3D footage for free at IMAX movie theaters around the country. (Including Tampa … I hope!)

KEVIN SMITH VS. MPAA ROUND 2: Director Kevin Smith faced a bit of see-bruce-willis-in-a-couple-of-dicks-00-440-75backlash over his last film Zach and Miri Make a Porno, with some newspapers refusing to run advertising featuring the P word. Now, Smith is facing a similar problem with his new movie, A Couple of Dicks, with some media outlets refusing to market the movie, which is about two cops (referred to as dicks since the 1930s). There is no word on what the title of the film, which stars Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan, will be changed to.

TITANIC SINKS IN 3D: James Cameron announced at Comic-Con that a 3D version of Titanic could be out as early as next year. The 1997 movie starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet is already the highest-grossing movie of all time, and apparently will extend its lead over Lord of the Rings: Return of the King by a bit more.

BRYCE DALLAS HOWARD IN TWILIGHT: Bryce Dallas Howard of The Village and Terminator: Salvation fame is taking over the role of the villainous Victoria from Rachelle Lefevre for the third Twilight movie, Twilight Eclipse. Originally, Lefevre was excited for the third movie, but something has obviously changed and she is citing a scheduling conflict for her departure. Because there are more important things in life than filming a huge movie franchise.

HOLY HANNAH MONTANA, BATMAN: One of the many rumors floating around Comic-Con this week was that Hannah Montana star Miley Cyrus had auditioned for the role of Batgirl in Chris Nolen’s Dark Knight follow-up — in costume and all. This could be just another way for Cyrus to get some publicity without taking her clothes off. You’ll remember Gary Oldman claimed they were going to start shooting next year, but quickly recanted the statement.wolfman-186

WOLFMAN DELAYED AGAIN: Benicio Del Toro’s Wolfman just announced its third change of release date. The new date is now February 12, 2010. The company cited incomplete special effects for this delay. Now guys everywhere are happy because for Valentine’s Day, we can go see Wolfman instead of some mushy chick-flick. Right, guys?

BOX OFFICE REPORT

The big news this week is Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince’s drop to second place with $30 million in ticket sales, bested by guinea pig action flick G-Force, which debuted with $32 million. The Ugly Truth debuted strong in third, with $27 million.

Transformers is now at number nine on the list of all-time top worldwide gross box office numbers, with over $790 million.

1. G-Force – $32.1 million
2. Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince – $30 million
3. The Ugly Truth – $27 million
4. Orphan – $12.7 million
5. Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs – $8.2 million
6. Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen – $8 million
7. The Hangover – $6.46 million
8. The Proposal - $6.42 million
9. Public Enemies - $4.1 million
10. Bruno – $2.7 million

GOODIES

Here is a video I found, thanks to The Movie Blog. This is what Ghostbusters would have looked like had it been made in 1954:

Some TV goodness this week in the form of a poster from the series Chuck, officially renewed for its third season.

TRAILER OF THE WEEK
This week, I have a very special treat for you: the debut of The Hot Tub Time Machine, starring the immortal John Cusack. Even though you can’t get tickets yet, I’m still ready to line up for this one, which looks hilarious!
