Various Artists – Ze 30: Ze Records 1979-2009
Ze remains one of the great cult labels of its time. With this new compilation, Strut takes a snapshot of the many weird and wonderful fusions that surfaced on its famous taxi cab-influenced yellow and black label. Highlights include one of the earliest outings by Was (Not Was) and a Larry Levan mix of Kid Creole’s biting parable about corruption in the Caribbean. Other featured artists include Ze label regulars Cristina and Bill Laswell’s Material.
CDs:
The Black Crowes – Before the Frost… Until The Freeze
A.A. Bondy – When the Devil’s Loose
Recorded primarily in April and May in Water Valley, Miss., When the Devil’s Loose expands upon the stripped down, haunting sound of his debut album, American Hearts. A full band now accompanies him on most tracks, lending a full, roomy sound of bluesy Americana.
Drive By Truckers – Fine Print
A collection of oddities and rarities from 2003 to 2008. Features songs written by band members past and present including Patterson Hood, Mike Cooley, and Jason Isbell.
Liam Finn – Champagne in Seashells
Tasty follow-up EP to last year’s critically lauded I’ll Be Lightning.
John Fogerty – Blue Ridge Rangers Rides Again CD/CD+DVD
Special guests include Bruce Springsteen and Don Henley. Deluxe edition contains a DVD featuring a “making of,” acoustic performances, and a trailer for the upcoming DVD release, Live from the Royal Albert Hall.
Juliette Lewis – Terra Incognita
New solo album produced by Omar Rodriguez-Lopez.
Richard Lloyd – The Jamie Neverts Story
Long-awaited collection of Jimi Hendrix covers recorded in early 2008 by ex-Television guitarist.
Chuck Ragan – Gold Country
Former Hot Water Music front man Chuck Ragan releases his sophomore solo album, performed with collaborators including violinist Jon Gaunt and Hot Water Music drummer George Rebelo.
Reverend Horton Heat* – Laughin’ and Cryin’ With Reverend Horton Heat
A pomade-stiff romp, Laughin’ And Cryin’ leans toward the hard-drinking, hard-driving “billy” side of rockabilly with lounge love songs (“Aw, The Humanity”), odes to the good life (“Drinkin’ And Smokin’ Cigarettes”), comical takes on family life (“Please Don’t Take The Baby To The Liquor Store”) and country guitar wizardry, Rev-style (“Oh By Jingo!”).
