Which big name food company is behind your organic food?

You’re buying more organic food these days, maybe for health reasons or just because it makes you feel like you’re making a difference. But did you know that most of the organic brands you find in the grocery store, like Cascadian Farm, Kashi, and Back to Nature, are owned by some of the biggest names in the food production business? That’s right, Cascadian Farm is owned by General Mills, Kashi is produced by Kellogg’s, and the number one food producer in the US, Kraft, owns Back to Nature. Does that mean that your food is any less good for you? Not necessarily. It’s true that the label of “organic” is open to much interpretation these days, so parts of your “organic” foods may not actually be so. But there’s no need to stop buying these products just because of who owns their labels. To be a smart consumer, simply read the labels of the food you’re buying, whether they’re touted as organic or not. On the ingredients list, if you notice any words like “high fructose”, “hydrogenated oil”, or words you can’t pronounce – it’d probably be best to leave in on the shelf.
