Are enough people waking up to make a difference? Or, maybe the scenario of The Age of Stupid, the film that’s circulating the globe, is a prediction of things to come.
The Student Environmental Awareness Society is starting their Environmental Film Series with the question, “Why didn’t we stop climate change when we had a chance?”
The film stars Pete Postlethwaite looks back from a devastated Earth in 2055, wondering who these people were in 2008/9 and what they were thinking to allow such a disaster as global warming.
The Age of Stupid is directed by Franny Armstrong (McLibel) and producer John Battsek (One Day in September). It was first released in the UK in March and is now being seen cities and towns everywhere. Take a look at the trailer:
The New York Times review includes a quote by Alvin DuVernay, who used to work for Shell Oil and lost his home in Hurricane Katrina. “With our use or misuse of resources the last 100 years or so, I’d probably rename this age something like The Age of Ignorance, The Age of Stupid,” he says.
The Pinellas County premier of the film is tonight, October 20 at 6 p.m. at Davis Hall (Bldg. 130) on the University of South Florida’s St. Petersburg campus. That’s just west of First Ave South at the Marine Science Institute. Bring quarters for the city meter, because there’s a panel discussion following it that promises to tell us what’s being done now to solve the climate crisis.
