Sunday music news links: Maroon 5, Nirvana, Them Crooked Vultures, Pearl Jam, Weezer and more (with video) news
October 25, 2009 at 4:15 pm by Kristina WelchThe weekend doesn’t officially end until you’re caught up on your music news.
RollingStone.com has exclusive video footage of Maroon 5 recording the follow-up album to 2007’s It Won’t Be Soon Before Long. The video also includes footage of the band lounging in Switzerland, where lead singer Adam Levine (pictured right) and company have been working on the album. Mr. Levine is truly my dream man, a beautiful, perverted poet. Isn’t that what all women want?
- Fuse will air the world premiere of Nirvana Live at Reading on Monday, Nov. 1, at 11 p.m. The concert is from 1992 and has never been released. Yes, everyone you know will be watching (and re-watching) this broadcast.
- Them Crooked Vultures have finally (finally!) announced the release date of their self-titled debut album to be Nov. 17. “No One Knows” for sure until the album drops, but I’d be a “Pretender” if I didn’t say this album could be a “Stairway to [Rock 'n' Roll] Heaven.”
- Artists like Pearl Jam, R.E.M. and Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails have joined the National Campaign to Close Guantanamo after learning their music may have been used to torture detainees. Is Miley Cyrus on the list of musicians whose music aided in the torture? Seriously. I’m not trying to be funny.
- Weezer is teaming up with Chamillionaire, Sara Bareilles and Kenny G for tracks for an upcoming edition of AOL Sessions at AOL’s Beverly Hills studio. Well, Beverly Hills is where Weezer wants to be, but who knew it would be Kenny G that would get them there?
- Speaking of Weezer, the band released the video for “(If You’re Wondering If I Want You To) I Want You To,” the first single off their new Raditude album, slated for release on Oct. 27. Enjoy the video — in your favorite undone sweater and with some pork and beans, of course — and more music links after the jump.
- Former Oasis guitarist Noel Gallagher has confirmed he’s embarking on a solo career, and that he’s not thinking about Oasis or brother-turned-rival Liam. Really, Noel? Are you sure going solo isn’t a little about pissing off Liam?
- Criminal charges against Kanye West stemming from a debacle with a photog last year have been dropped. Battles in the case of Kanye vs. Everyone Else in the Entire World are still ongoing.
Taylor Swift sold out four concerts from her U.S. tour just two minutes after tickets went on sale Friday morning. And what did you do with your morning?
- A group of Michael Jackson devotees have launched a campaign against the movie This Is It, claiming it covers up the darkness of his final days, when he “looked like he might have died.” Musical legend or not, he always looked like death warmed over. He looked more human on South Park, for crying out loud!
- Cracker Barrel is set to offer an Alan Jackson collection, which includes pieces like clothing, collectibles, a rocking chair and a CD. Just try to out-country that, Tim McGraw!
- It was announced that Robbie Williams will be receiving the Outstanding Contribution to Music Award at Next year’s BRIT Awards. Quick! Name two songs other than “Millennium” that this guy has contributed to the world of music. Kudos if you remember “Angels.” After that, I’ve got nothing.
- Vivian Girls are expanding their upcoming UK tour. Exactly what were they talking about when they named their latest album, Everything Goes Wrong?
- Steve Martin (yes, that Steve Martin) is dusting off his banjo and touring with bluegrass band Steep Canyon Rangers. If this doesn’t go well, this Simple Twist of Fate could make him look like a real Jerk.
- The seventh annual Good Vibrations Festival announced its 2010 acts, which include the Killers, Gossip, Gym Class Heroes, Kid Cudi and Busta Rhymes. The festival will be held for two weekends in February in locations around Australia. Crikey! How much does a ticket cost to travel Down Under?
- Are you just aching for R.E.M.’s Live at the Olympia album, which hits stores Tuesday? The band understands your pain, which is why they’re letting fans listen to it online. Because everybody hurts … sometimes.
