Project Runway recap: the big finale, with no lack of tears, furs and shocking plot twists…kinda

November 20, 2009 at 3:03 pm by Amanda Allwood

It’s a big week for me, with the premiere of New Moon and the season finale of Project Runway, so despite my sudden fever and inability to breathe through my nose, I am excited and ready for some recapping!

To catch you all up, we are in New York and it’s just a couple days before the show at Bryant Park and poor Carol Hannah is blorching in the bathroom at the hotel. Before we even begin, I, for the record, am on Team Carol Hannah for the win. I love the evening looks, the dresses, the classic style, the drama, the frufiness, I love it all. One of my BFFs, Amanda W, is on Team Althea. We have a bet, loser buys the other one a Starbucks drink. If Irina wins, we all lose, as a human race, for allowing such a crazy be-otch to hold the title of Project Runway Winner. That is my stance on that.

From what I can tell, the workroom was basically just a mess of chaos, alterations, annoyance and tears for two days. I can understand though, I want to cry for Carol Hannah, she is beyond sick, I cannot imagine working under that kind of pressure while being that ill, ugh! At least she has Logan to comfort her, someone Wikipedia that and tell me they ended up married … I really want that happy ending. In non-loving news, Althea and Irina seem to be sharing brain waves yet again with the makeup look, bringing Althea to tears, the third workroom-cry within the first 10 minutes of the show … I’m no expert but that might be a record.

tim gunnWhen they finally got to the tents, the chaos went from yikes to redonkulous. I have never seen Tim Gunn as upset as he got backstage at the runway show. No one was ready and he was not the least bit pleased. He ALMOST YELLED!!!! I cannot believe it, but seriously, these girls are a mess, models aren’t dressed, hair isn’t done. Big. Huge. Mess.

After the jump find out who wins, who loses and who has to buy Starbucks, or if we just lose as a planet.

The Runway!!

Althea:
My first thought was that this was a very cohesive collection, but the judges disagreed with me on that. I am holding my ground though, I do feel that there was a common thread throughout all of her looks. I absolutely love the separates, they are different and interesting and as much as I want Carol Hannah to win she is some serious competition. Oh and the tan gown that is finishing off the collection is made amazingly well, it fits beautifully, my favorite of her collection, for sure.

Carol Hannah:
I looooove it! It’s poofy and frilly and adorable and she is the only one who used colors well throughout her collection. My favorite is definitely that lavender tutu dress, it’s stunning. She gets a gold star for actually using an array of colors, something no one else has done and though the judges don’t think her collection is totally cohesive, I don’t know that it matters so much in this situation, to me at least. I like the dresses, they are pretty, I want her to win, end of story.

Irina:
I like the ideas that Irina has but I am not sure I am in love with the proportions she is using and I am not totally sold on the Roman helmet headwear (are they protecting themselves from something??) Nothing stood out to me as a gorgeous, creative look and it was all very black and dull. Given, my crappy television is probably not doing her textures and metallics justice, but this is what I can see and frankly, I am bored. to. tears. Also, I will again say that it is 2009, who is still doing fur?!

irina

judgesJudging sidenote: Who thinks that Suzy Menkes’ head piece is fab-u-lous?! Ummm, me. Work it you little (ok, not so little) British lady I’ve never heard of before just now.

All of their collections totally encompass who they are as designers and that is something that often gets lost in the crazy challenges throughout the season so I am stoked to see that come through so strongly in all three collections. Something that never seems to get lost and couldn’t be left out of the finale…Irina is STILL giving bitch looks! Listen, it’s the end of the season, give it up. No one cares that you can throw a stank look like it’s your friggin’ job, we get it, you’re a bitch and you think that everyone else either sucks or is stealing ideas from you. WE KNOW. Geez.

Oh, wait, do you actually want to know who the winner is? Okay, well that’s fine but I want you to prepare yourselves to be disappointed … Do you have your gasps ready and your mouse at a safe distance from your screen so that you don’t hurl it toward the computer in a failed attempt to displace your anger? Okay, good, cuz Irina won.
Yeah, Irina won and I think this is really a whole bunch of crap. Did I miss something incredible about her collection? I suddenly feel downtrodden, as if my entire world has been turned upside down. I mean, I loved Carol Hannah’s collection but I was assuming Althea had this, based upon the awesomeness of her pants. I was ready to buy my friend a Starbucks’ Americana thing that she drinks, accept defeat and call it a day, it would have been a fair win. This though, this is unacceptable.

Sigh….at least there is next season, back in New York, where they belong. Until then, thanks to the ten people who read my rants and opinions, it’s been fun!

SEASON 6 STATS:
Designers remaining: 1 (Irina, Boooooooo, Hiiiissssss, Cries of disappointment)
Cry count: 21
Complete emotional breakdown: 2.5
Use of the word “Fierce”: 2
