Open your eyes to green fashion

November 27, 2009 at 10:20 am by Jennifer Meier

kermit fashionWhile Kermit the Frog pulled off his own trademark shade of green, people interested in wearing “green” fashion will have the colors of the rainbow to choose from. When we talk about eco-friendly clothing we tend to refer to organic materials and Fair Trade merchandise, but there is so much more to it than that. There is the reusing of vintage clothes, the absence of animal products, and the concept that consumers could be more responsible in their choices.

There isn’t a simple definition to green fashion, but an earth-conscious consumer should know that they should look for the following:

  1. Look for organically grown fibers such as cotton, bamboo and hemp as these choices reduce the carbon and environmental footprint of fashion – including the costs for caring and maintaining the garments.
  2. Opt for Fair Trade labels because it guarantees no humans suffered in the making of your garments.
  3. Avoid leather and other cruelty-free materials.
  4. Don’t purchase due to trends, just stick with classic shapes and styles, or browse through used clothing and vintage shops to create your own distinctive looks.

emma_watsonNow that we have a bit more understanding about green fashion, we can consider some of the newer trends in it. For one thing, celebrities have really climbed on board the concept of earth-friendly clothes. For instance, young starlet Emma Watson is releasing her own line of trendy Fair Trade clothes in 2010.

Additionally, many online vendors are offering stylish ready-to-wear goods as well.  A shopper can find a range of organic tops at GoGreenItems.com, including long and short-sleeve t-shirts. What sort of difference would a single t-shirt make? Well, it takes approximately one-third of a pound of chemicals to process the standard non-organic cotton for a regular t-shirt. If you do the math and add up the chemicals used to fill a single chest of drawers with t-shirts it is easy to see how shopping for clothes can make a global difference.
