New on DVD: The Spirit & The Who

Posted by Joe Bardi on Apr. 14, 2009, at 1:18 pm

Comic fans continue to debate the merits of Frank Miller’s The Spirit, which arrives today in a Blu-ray and two-disc DVD package. They say you never want to follow in the footsteps of a legend, and The Spirit largely proves this point by failing to live up to its predecessor, the much-beloved Sin City. Of course, Sin City had Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino on board, and reveled in darker material and the R rating to go with it. (The kinder/gentler Spirit somehow squeaked out a PG-13 despite violence galore.) But forget the story for a second — as a show-off disc for your hot new home theater set-up, The Spirit is a winner. The films sharp visuals and crisp sound are perfect for basking in the glow of that new 1080P monster you just installed in the family room. Special features include Frank Miller talking about the film on a commentary track and about his work in a “Miller on Miller” segment, Samuel L. Jackson adding his mothafucking voice to a storyboarded alternate ending, and the de rigueur bonus of the moment — a digital copy of the film for use with iTunes or Windows.

More (including a trailer for The Spirit) after the jump …

Go Trek yourself

Posted by Joe Bardi on Apr. 9, 2009, at 2:51 pm

As part of the hype for J.J. Abram’s Star trek re-boot, Paramount Pictures has launched a website where you can Trek-ify a picture of yourself. Kinda-sorta entertaining. Probably not as cool as having Optimus Prime or Mitt Romney call your friends, but not that far off either.

As an added convenience, the site will allow you to grab a photo from Facebook, eliminating the need to upload a pic. That’s me as a Romulan above. I know, very cute. (To see my Trek-face in action and talking, click below to “read more ‘Go Trek Yourself.’”) It took less than 5 minutes to put together and the lip-syncing (that’s not my voice) is pretty good. If you try this out, leave me a comment or send me the embed code (joe.bardi@creativeloafing.com). If I get a few good ones, I’ll post them here.

Live long and prosper, folks.

Preview for Mike Judge’s Office Space-like movie Extract

Posted by Joe Bardi on Apr. 9, 2009, at 12:58 pm

Director Mike Judge is heading back into Office Space territory with Extract, a new comedy set largely in a factory. This preview landed online today, and from it we can glean 1. Ben Affleck’s haircut is a riot, 2. Jason Bateman & Kristen Wiig could be couple of the year, 3. Mila Kunis keeps getting hotter, and 4. Sometimes pot smoking is just a CGI effect. Check it out for yourself below. Extract opens September 4, 2009.

Out today: Dennis Miller: The HBO Specials

Posted by Joe Bardi on Apr. 7, 2009, at 3:30 pm

[Note: For a more complete rundown of today's DVD/Blu-ray releases, go here. I thought D.M. deserved a little special attention …]

It’s a shame what’s happened to Dennis Miller’s career. After graduating from Saturday Night Live’s “Weekend Update” anchor chair, Miller went on to fame and fortune with some killer HBO specials, crappy movie work (Disclosure, The Net, Bordello of Blood), a weekly TV show (Dennis Miller Live), and a memorable stint from 2000-2002 in the booth with Al Michaels and Dan Fouts on ABC’s Monday Night Football. After the 9/11 attacks, Miller’s politics and comedy took a hard right turn, with the previously sharp counterculture comic rolling over for the Bush administration and the war in Iraq.

New today on DVD & Blu-ray

Posted by Joe Bardi on Apr. 7, 2009, at 12:28 pm

The Academy Awards may have come and gone, but this year’s nominees for Best Picture are just now making their way to your home theater. Milk led the pack with a March 10 release date, followed by Oscar winner Slumdog Millionare, which hit DVD and Blu-Ray on March 31. April sees Amy Adams and Meryl Streep do battle with Philip Seymour Hoffman in Doubt (out today); Kate Winslet get swept up in Holocaust romance in The Reader (April 14); and the brilliant Frank Langella resurrects Tricky Dick in Ron Howard’s Frost/Nixon (April 21). Sorry, Brad Pitt fans, you have to wait until next month to own The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, which hits stores May 5.
But enough about these damn movies already! Frankly, after all the pre-Oscar hype, I’m sick of hearing about them. Instead, let’s talk about last year’s Best Picture winner: No Country For Old Men. The Coen Brothers’ dark, new-fangled Western starring Josh Brolin, Tommy Lee Jones and Javier Bardem’s haircut finally gets the deluxe treatment today with a three-disc DVD and two-disc Blu-ray package.
Originally released last year lacking suitable extras, No Country is done up right this time, with about five hours of bonus material. In addition to the standard “making of” documentary and interviews, the set also boasts cast-and-crew holding forth on what it’s like to work with the revered Coens. One high-tech addition is the inclusion of a downloadable copy of the film for use on your iPod or Windows devices. It’s a cool feature, even though No Country’s bright desert photography needs to be experienced on a screen larger than a deck of cards to be appreciated.

ODDS & ENDS
A few more titles out today that are worth mentioning: Keanu Reeves’ remake of The Day The Earth Stood Still didn’t exactly tank at the box office, but it was no home run either. Skip it and check out the new Blu-Ray of 2010: The Year We Make Contact, director Peter Hyams’ better-than-expected 1984 sequel to Stanley Kubrick’s classic 2001: A Space Odyssey. If neither of those floats your boat, grab Jim Carrey in Yes Man or an animated rat in The Tale of Despereaux, both out today.

Bruno trailer released online

Posted by Joe Bardi on Apr. 3, 2009, at 11:38 am

Universal has dropped the red-band trailer for Bruno, Sacha Baron Cohen’s follow-up to 2006’s hilarious Borat. Word is the MPAA slapped Bruno with the dreaded NC-17 rating, and from the looks of this preview that may have been generous. This being a big summer release from a major studio, I’m sure the producers will work this down to an R before the July 10th release date.

Ghostbusters 3 in the works

Posted by Joe Bardi on Mar. 31, 2009, at 11:21 am

News from Ain’t It Cool via MTV is that Ghostbusters 3 is a go, with the original cast on board! Per Harry K.’s site:

Ramis promised that all the old core players will take part in the updated version, including Bill Murray (Dr. Peter Venkman) and Dan Aykroyd (Dr. Raymond Stantz), who co-wrote the original films. “We’re all going to be in it in different kinds of roles,” Ramis said. “We’re going to be the sage mentors. There are going to be young Ghostbusters.”
At the moment, Ramis is waiting on a first draft of the script, which is being penned by Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky, two writer/producers on “The Office,” who also wrote “Year One.” “Gene and Lee, both of whom I mentored, are now writing the new ‘Ghostbusters,’ ” Ramis said. “I’m consulting with them, as is Dan Aykroyd and [original director] Ivan Reitman.

Best part was Ramis’s kicker at the end:

“Bill Murray is just waiting for the truckload of money to arrive to get him out of his office,” Ramis joked.

Tough to say whether or not Ghostbusters 3 will be worthy of the hype. The original is a classic, but Ghostbusters 2 sucked slimer’s green gonads. Injecting young blood into the franchise is certainly a decent — if tired — way of resurrecting the franchise.

Now, if only Ramis and Murray would get to work on Caddyshack 3, maybe we’d have something here.

Naked Dawn: Red Dawn with more balls

Posted by Joe Bardi on Mar. 26, 2009, at 11:01 am

When I was a kid in the ’80s, I was a big fan of high-schooler war flick Red Dawn. In it, a rag-tag group of kids escapes a Russian invasion of America only to stick it to the Commies, insurgent style. Leave it to Funny Or Die to shoot a great parody trailer. Please enjoy Naked Dawn, starring Rob Schneider.

Domino’s Big Taste Bailout = cynical marketing B.S.

Posted by Joe Bardi on Mar. 25, 2009, at 3:08 pm

Domino’s Pizza has made noise of late with their heavily advertised “Big Taste Bailout.” Ostensibly a handout to down-on-their-luck pizza lovers across the nation, the “Big Taste Bailout” offers one-topping pizzas or hot sandwiches for $5 each, provided you buy a minimum of three. In addition to being a supposedly great deal, Domino’s is clearly advancing a “we feel feel your pain” meme, hoping to engender loyalty in the general public. Per the press release:

“We know times are hard, it’s a reality we are all facing,” says [Domino's CEO Dave] Brandon. “But I didn’t go to Washington to ask for a bailout. Instead, we are giving one. I’m proud to be able to offer our consumers a promotion with such a great deal on pizza. By adding our oven baked sandwiches to the mix we are further increasing the number of taste varieties to the offering.”

Domino’s is also looking for some help from you:

In an on-line continuation of the promotion, Domino’s is launching the Super Big Taste Bailout. Here, consumers are encouraged to nominate a friend in need of a bailout. Two winners, as well as their nominating friends, will receive a year’s worth of Domino’s Pizza products with the prize delivered directly to their door by Dave Brandon himself.

Seems like a terrific deal, right? It isn’t. My message to Domino’s Pizza and their smarmy, incredibly cynical marketing promotion: Go fuck yourself.

Legalize marijuana? The CNBC debate …

Posted by Joe Bardi on Mar. 25, 2009, at 12:00 pm

Sure, Jon Stewart spent time raking business net CNBC over the coals a few weeks ago — a well-deserved drubbing if there ever was one. However, that’s no reason not to highlight an example of network doing something right. What follows is a killer Power Lunch segment from last week that debates whether or not marijuana should be regulated instead of outlawed. Normally, these news channel weed debates are one-sided affairs meant to scare the pants off parents and reinforce the status quo. Not this one. Here, the debate is framed in economic terms (this is a business network, after all), and the consensus may surprise you. Video after the page break …

Joaquin Phoenix in stage-dive brawl

Posted by Joe Bardi on Mar. 12, 2009, at 2:38 pm

After Phoenix hits the floor, pandemonium breaks out and it’s hard to tell if any punches are actually thrown. Still, gotta love the chaos.

Spider-Man 4 gets a release date

Posted by Joe Bardi on Mar. 12, 2009, at 12:52 pm

A quick release-date update: Sony has revealed that Spider-Man 4 will be hitting theaters on May 6, 2011. Director Sam Raimi is on board, and I’d expect that with the original director back, Toby Maguire and Kirsten Dunst would sign on if asked. (Of course, Dunst may be on the outs.) With two years to go before the release, at least the overwhelming hype is still months away.

In other scheduling news, Marvel has racked quite a slate of superhero flicks for the next few years. The list is as follows:

Scar-Jo, Mickey Rourke cast in Iron Man 2.

Posted by Joe Bardi on Mar. 12, 2009, at 11:13 am

A double-whammy of casting news for John Favreau’s follow-up to last year’s blockbuster Iron Man. First, Scarlett Johansson has signed up, replacing Emily Blunt as Black Widow. Per the story at /Film, Blunt had to drop out due to a scheduling conflict, opening the door for Scar-Jo. If this works out, expect to see the actress reprise the role in several Marvel flicks due over the next few years.

And in a long rumored move, current critical darling Mickey Rourke and Marvel finally came to terms for the actor to play Iron Man 2’s Russian villian. (The studio had been low-balling Rourke with a paltry $250,000 offer.) I’m sure Putin is going to love this.

Main man Robert Downey Jr. will also be back, along with a double-shot of Sams (Rockwell and L. Jackson), with Jackson under contract for as many as nine (!!!) Marvel flicks.

Iron Man 2 is set for release in 2010.

Prank Wars: The Revenge

Posted by Joe Bardi on Mar. 4, 2009, at 2:11 pm

You may recall a video that made the rounds a while back detailing the latest conflagration in a prank war between two guys who work for collegehumor.com. In the last installment (shot in September 2007), pranker Amir gave his pal Streeter a pair of Yankee tickets for him and his girl. Amir worked some magic on the Jumbotron and hilarity ensued. Take a look:

Streeter, obviously burned by this prank, bided his time, considered his alternatives, and a full 18 months later finally got his revenge on Amir. Streeter’s ruse: An incredible half-court shot for $500,000 at a Maryland college basketball game. Video after the jump — and it’s hilarious!

And the winner is …

Posted by Joe Bardi on Mar. 3, 2009, at 11:24 am

Creative Loafing’s inaugural Oscar contest was simple: Pick the winners in six top categories and tell us what time the show would end. Dozens of you took a shot, with 13 entrants nailing all six categories correctly. After we sorted out the tiebreaker (the show ended at 11:56 p.m., with the credits rolling until 11:59 p.m.), the only person left standing was Bay area resident Debbie Tozier.

When asked via e-mail how she came by her amazing Oscar prognostication skills, Debbie replied: “I guess a did a little research by reading Oscar articles in Creative Loafing and the St. Pete Times, and I had seen several of the movies and felt pretty strongly about some of my choices.”

Variety reviews Watchmen

Posted by Joe Bardi on Feb. 26, 2009, at 12:40 pm

In the first major review of Watchmen, Variety’s Justin Chang has mixed feelings about the much anticipated superhero flick. An excerpt:

Yet the movie is ultimately undone by its own reverence; there’s simply no room for these characters and stories to breathe of their own accord, and even the most fastidiously replicated scenes can feel glib and truncated. As “Watchmen” lurches toward its apocalyptic (and slightly altered) finale, something happens that didn’t happen in the novel: Wavering in tone between seriousness and camp, and absent the cerebral tone that gave weight to some of the book’s headier ideas, the film seems to yield to the very superhero cliches it purports to subvert.

Uh oh, Watchmen fans. Did Snyder just fuck up your baby? You’ll have to wait until March 6 to find out.

Spider-Man hits Broadway

Posted by Joe Bardi on Feb. 24, 2009, at 1:33 pm

Everyone’s favorite web-crawler (sorry, Charlotte) is poised to make his Broadway debut — in a musical! That’s not even the crazy part. Per Variety:

Helmed by Julie Taymor (“The Lion King”), “Spider-Man, Turn Off the Dark” will have music and lyrics by Bono and The Edge, both of U2. Taymor and Glen Berger (”Underneath the Lintel”) pen the book.

Julie Taymor? Bono and The Edge? That’s some major star-power in the playbill. My gut instint is to call all of these people insane and rant about how a Spider-Man musical is just about the dumbest fucking idea I have ever heard. Only problem: It isn’t.

The Short List: The stock market hits 1997 levels

Woo hoo! They are partying like it’s 1997 down on Wall Street. I don’t know about you, but I’m waiting for it to hit 1933 levels before I start my bargain hunting.

  • Obama plans “a more transparent budget.” I presume that means it will be printed on clear paper.
  • “I have already talked to (Defense Secretary Robert) Gates about a thorough review of the helicopter situation. The helicopter I have now seems perfectly adequate to me.”
  • The FBI is hot on the trail of Buddy Johnson.
  • Obama remains popular in opinion polls.
  • Keep your bikes off the Selmon, hippies!
  • Destined to go down in flames: A bill to legalize weed in California.
  • Academy Award ratings not quite as horrible as last year.

(12.04 a.m.) and Steven (12:02 a.m.). You guys came up just short. The winner of dinner and a movie is Debbie, who not only got all six films right, but also picked 11:59 p.m. as the end of show. Oscar Preview: Best Picture

Note: If you haven’t done so already, make sure you enter our Oscar contest for a chance at free dinner and a movie from Creative Loafing. And don’t miss our live-blogging of the show itself, starting 7 p.m. on Sunday night, right here on The Daily Loaf.

Now, we continue our countdown to Oscar night with a look at a major award up for grabs on Sunday. (Friday was Best Director.) Today, we break down:

BEST PICTURE
Nominees:
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Frost/Nixon, Milk, The Reader, Slumdog Millionaire

Vegas odds: Some wacky numbers (Slumdog is 2-19, Button is 9-2) leave no real favorite in the race for Best Picture. What is clear is that a win by Milk (20-1), Frost/Nixon (30-1) or The Reader (30-1) would be stunning to the gambling community.

Oscar Preview: Best Director

Posted by Joe Bardi on Feb. 20, 2009, at 11:33 am

(Yesterday was Best Actress.) Today, we break down:

BEST DIRECTOR
Nominees:
David Fincher, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button; Ron Howard, Frost/Nixon; Gus Van Sant, Milk; Stephen Daldry, The Reader; Danny Boyle, Slumdog Millionaire
Vegas odds: Another clear favorite, with every $10 bet on Doyle netting only $1 profit if he wins. Fincher is still in the running at 5-1. Van Sant (20-1), Howard (20-1) and Daldry (30-1) would all deliver sweet rewards if they paid off.

Goldman Sachs, Burger King and your tax dollars

Posted by Joe Bardi on Feb. 19, 2009, at 2:47 pm

Here’s the latest from Brave New Films, a look at Goldman Sachs’ 2002 purchase of Burger King and the wage slavery the BK employees live under:

It’s just infuriating. Both the Democrats and Republicans are bought and paid for by companies like Goldman, so there is no surprise in Congress rolling over. However, I do find myself wondering where all the grandstanding Republicans are on this issue? After going insane over a few hundred million of stimulus money directed toward family planning, you’d think they might have something to say about a company lining its pockets with $10 BILLION of taxpayer money while the employees can’t afford food. Oh wait, that would indicate intellectual honesty. My mistake.

BEST ACTRESS
Nominees:
Anne Hathaway, Rachel Getting Married; Angelina Jolie, Changeling; Melissa Leo, Frozen River; Meryl Streep, Doubt; Kate Winslet, The Reader

Vegas odds: It’s a three-way race, with Oscar all-star Streep (7-2) and newcomer Hathaway (7-2) lagging behind favorite Winslet (1-2). Wins by Jolie (18-1) or Leo (30-1) would be shocking — but quite profitable.

Tampa Bay Rays take the field

Posted by Joe Bardi on Feb. 18, 2009, at 11:58 am

Last scene sulking off the field in World Series defeat, the Tampa Bay Rays opened spring training this morning with their first full-squad workout. After the depressing end to last year (can you say “unfinished business”?), it’s great to have the American League Champions back on the diamond, preparing for a long campaign against the high-spending Yanks and Sox.

We plan to have an epic amount of Rays coverage this year, so come back often for updates as the hometown team makes a run at the pennant.

Peter Gabriel dumps the Oscars

Posted by Joe Bardi on Feb. 13, 2009, at 11:06 am

Musician Peter Gabriel has decided to drop out of performing at Feb. 22nd’s Academy Awards telecast due to a dispute over performance time. Gabriel thought he was performing his song “Down To Earth” from WALL-E in its entirety, but was informed by the Academy that he would only get 60 seconds. Per Variety:

[Gabriel] does not believe the song will work in such a truncated form.

“It’s a bit unfortunate,” he said in a video on his website. “The songwriters are a very small part of the filmmaking process but we still work bloody hard and deserve (a bigger part in the ceremony).”

Calling himself “an old fart” who can afford to “make a little protest,” Gabriel’s hope is that the Oscarcast producers will reconsider the move next year and reinstate full performances of songs.

Anna Nicole Smith: The Opera

Posted by Joe Bardi on Feb. 12, 2009, at 4:15 pm

Yes, you read that right. Britian’s Royal Opera is planning to adapt the life and times of Anna Nicole Smith. Per Variety:

The company says the show will have music by respected British composer Mark-Anthony Turnage. The libretto is by Richard Thomas, co-creator of “Jerry Springer: The Opera,” an earlier merger of highbrow and lowbrow culture. It is due to run in the Royal Opera’s 2011 season.

Many questons remain: Can the producers find a female opera singer who can pull of this role? What kind of special effects will be required to get the star to repeatedly gain and lose 100 lbs. during the show? Is Kato Kaelin available to play Larry Birkhead?

Sneak Peak: The International

Posted by Joe Bardi on Feb. 10, 2009, at 3:57 pm

The folks at MSN have posted an exclusive preview of the upcoming Clive Owen/Naomi Watts thriller The International. The video consists of the first 5 minutes of the film, and it’s a gripping tease — a tense meeting between two men, a sudden death, a minor car accident, a fun CSI-like autopsy. I would have liked a little more Naomi Watts (she apparently shows up later in the movie), but that’s probably because I could watch her read the Times for two hours and be a happy man. Is The International worth your cash this weekend? Hard to tell from only a few minutes, but I’m definitely intrigued.

Of course, time was of the essence once again on last night’s episode of Lost. From 9 p.m. until 10:02 p.m. (very slippery thwarting of the DVR folks, ABC), I studied it like the Zapruder film — and came away with about as many concrete conclusions. I would love to break it all down for you, but I’m swamped. In the meantime, I would direct you to Doc Jensen’s EW column … but Doc took the day off as well! Asst. Lost Report: “Because You Left”/”The Lie”

Posted by Joe Bardi on Jan. 22, 2009, at 1:30 pm

After what seemed an eternity, ABC’s Lost has finally returned for another 16 episode run. When last we saw the castaways on TV’s funkiest island it was May 29, 2008. Hillary Clinton was still alive for the Democratic nomination. The Dow was above 12,500. On a personal note, I’ve gotten engaged and bought a house since the island vanished before our very eyes. Time marches on.

Of course, Time (with a captial T) is what this season of Lost is all about. Rather than give a full recap of each episode (CL Intern Michelle has her take here, and I highly recommend Entertainment Weekly’s Doc Jansen as well), I’ll focus on the things that captured my imagination or made my head spin — often simultaniously. It strikes me that much of the fun of Lost comes from sorting through everyone’s theories, and then finding out exactly how far off we are when a new episode airs and changes everything.

One final note: If the season premiere of Lost is sitting on your DVR until you have a free moment, you’ll probably want to stop reading now.

Still with me? Good. Click below and check out my quick hits on last night’s season premiere …

Obama’s first day in office was a success. Business was done. Executive Orders were released. A BS church ceremony was attended. I didn’t think about Bush all day. Damn, now I ruined it.

  • Caroline Kennedy pulls out of the race to be appointed to Hillary’s old Senate seat.
  • Barack Obama is sworn in … again. (Just to be safe.)

Reel Projections: Tarantino’s Kill Bill gets a makeover

Posted by Joe Bardi on Jan. 21, 2009, at 1:56 pm

Rumors have been kicking around for some time that Quentin Tarantino is planning to recombine the excellent Kill Bill: Vol. 1 & 2 into one complete film on DVD. Of course, that was before the director ditched the continental 48 for Europe to shoot this summer’s Inglourious Basterds starring Brad Jolie. Fortunately, QT has gone on the record again, stating that Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair will be a reality, and that the filmmakers have even gone back and added a brand-spankin’ new, 7 minute anime sequence to the film. Though there’s still no release date (Amazon has a link to product they claim has been “discontinued by the manufacturer”), expect to see this package drop sometime right before the release of Basterds. It’s called corporate cynergy, yo!

Reel Projections: Mike Tyson has nothing to do with this post

Posted by Joe Bardi on Jan. 20, 2009, at 4:26 pm

With history going on in D.C., the movie biz took time out from partying at Sundance to watch Obama’s inauguration speech. Speaking of Sundance, would you believe a documentary about Mike Tyson from director James Tolback was an early highlight of the festival? Only in America. As Nathan points out in the comments, I screwed this up and got an article from the Cannes film fest mixed in with my Sundance reading. I feel stupid and regret the error. This really ruins my use of that Tyson photo, huh?

Sony has decided to postpone the opening of 2012, the latest disaster mess from Independence Day director Roland Emmerich, from July 10 to Nov. 13. Sony claims the delay is due to an already rock-solid summer schedule, but I suspect there are problems with film that can’t be fixed by July …

The Short List: President Barack Obama

Posted by Joe Bardi on Jan. 20, 2009, at 6:00 am

To get you geared-up for the big moment, here is an excellent AP short on how far we’ve come “From Emancipation to Inauguration.” Also, be sure to check out our live blogging of the even over on PoHo. Oh, and W.: Don’t let the door hit you in the ass on the way out.

  • Dick Cheney to attend inauguration in a wheel chair. I have no comment.
  • Jill Biden reveals to Oprah that Joe had his choice of jobs, VP or Sec. of State. Gulp.

Tampa Bay’s “driving Holocaust”

Posted by Joe Bardi on Jan. 16, 2009, at 5:02 pm

Drew Magary’s Jambaroo, published every Thursday on sport blog Deadspin, is a must read for serious football fans who also get the absurdity of their favorite sport. This week, Drew is sounding off on championship Sunday when he takes time out to address a potential Super Bowl crisis:

And so, if the favorites hold, we’ll end up with an all-Pennsylvania Super Bowl that will take place in Florida. People, I don’t think I’m exaggerating when I say this kind of mass influx of Pennsylvanians into the greater Tampa area will result in A FUCKING DRIVING HOLOCAUST.

This video of the improptu rescue of U.S Airways flight 1549 in New York’s Hudson River is just amazing. And the passengers all made it out alive! On that note, have a good weekend everyone.

  • The cause of the crash seems to be a flock of birds.
  • By the way: The first report of the crash came on Twitter by a guy from Sarasota.

Tampa Theatre encores Rachel Getting Married

Posted by Joe Bardi on Jan. 15, 2009, at 12:51 pm

Tampa Theatre is making a habit out of reviving last year’s films that are now up for serious award consideration. First, I got word that Woody Allen’s Vicky Cristina Barcelona would menage it’s way back onto the big screen from Jan. 16 through 21st. Now, the Sony Pictures Classics publicity department is reporting that Jonathan Demme’s Rachel Getting Married will again unspool at the Tampa Theatre starting Jan. 23. Rachel received excellent reviews upon release (yeah, we liked it), and should be up for several Oscar nods, including one for star Anne Hathaway.

What’s next, Tampa Theatre? You guys planning a WALL-E screening anytime soon?

Fellow Geezers review Clint’s Gran Torino

Posted by Joe Bardi on Jan. 15, 2009, at 11:12 am

This is Marcia and Lorenzo. They have been posting movie reviews online under the handle “Reel Geezers” for a little over a year now, in the process garnering a tidy little fanbase. Both have film industry experience, and their reviews are a lot more insightful than the gimmick of having old fogies review new flicks requires. This week, they’re taking on one of their own as they take apart fellow geezer Clint Eastwood’s box office hit, Gran Torino. Best part: Lorenzo’s analysis that the film is really a comedy — whether Eastwood meant it to be or not. Good stuff.

The Short List: Obama to end “Don’t ask, don’t tell”?

Posted by Joe Bardi on Jan. 15, 2009, at 6:00 am

With Apple CEO Steve Jobs’ announcement that he is taking a medical leave of absence until the end of June, all eyes turn to the electronics giant and its price per share. How will Wall Street react? stay tuned. And get well soon, Steve.

  • Is this the end of the line for the military’s controversial policy on gay soldiers?
  • America supports Obama’s economic plan, despite no one really knowing what it is.

Breaking: Apple’s Steve Jobs takes “medical leave”

Posted by Joe Bardi on Jan. 14, 2009, at 5:04 pm

Apple fan-boys have been in a tizzy for months, speculating about the deteriorating health of Apple CEO/Guru Steve Jobs. Just last week, Jobs released a letter stating that he was not dying, had a treatable “hormone imbalance” and was fully capable of removing himself from power if the need be.

Today, the need be.

Drudge Lap-Dog Breitbart.com has Jobs taking a “medical leave of absence until the end of June.” If this pans out, expect Apple’s stock price to tank — big-time. Fair or not, no other company is perceived as being as dependent on its CEO as Apple.

We’ll have more details on this as they become available.

Vicky Cristina Barcelona returns to Tampa Theatre

Posted by Joe Bardi on Jan. 13, 2009, at 1:14 pm

On the set of iVicky Christina Barcelona/i

Just got word from Nicole Southworth that the Tampa Theatre is going to be showing Woody Allen’s now Golden Globe-award winning film Vicky Cristina Barcelona for a limited engagement starting Jan. 16. The showtimes are as follows:

Fri., Jan. 16: 7:30 p.m.

Sat., Jan. 17: 2 p.m., 7:30 p.m.

Sun., Jan 18 through Wed., Jan 21: 7:30 p.m.

Not sure if it’s worth your time, despite the recent showering of praise by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association? Does the fact that film features Scar Jo and P-Cruz in a threesome with Javier Bardem alter your thinking any? If you’re still on the fence (what’s wrong with you?), check out our (positive) review of the film here.

* Picking up our Watchmen coverage, the above is Warner Bros.’ newish clip for the superhero spectacular that has been airing during the NFL Playoffs. Meanwhile, rumors leaking out of the negotiations between Warner and Fox hint that the sides are close to settling, meaning we might get to see the movie on March 6 after all. (Here’s the NY Times take on the wrangling.) You didn’t really believe the studio weasels were going to kill this one, did you?

* Will Linda Hamilton reprise her role as Sarah Connor in the upcoming Terminator Salvation? Better start hitting the weights, Linda.

iTunes goes DRM-free (finally)

Posted by Joe Bardi on Jan. 6, 2009, at 1:39 pm

I’ve been keeping an eye on the keynote address going on right now at Apple’s Macworld conference. After a pretty uninspiring show (upgraded software, one new laptop, almost no surprises), new keynote MC Phil Schiller revealed that Apple’s iTunes Music Store is dumping the annoying copy protection scheme, Fairplay DRM. Basically, this means that when you download something from iTunes, you own it and can do whatever you want with it. No more “You can’t play this song on this computer” message. It’s about damn time, Apple.

In addition, iPhone and iPod Touch users can now download music directly to their mobile device, eliminating the need to first download songs into iTunes running on a computer. A nice, overdue feature.

Other than that, no iPhone Nano, no new Mac Mini, no updates to the iMac line. Weak sauce, Apple. Maybe Steve Jobs is dying after all.

UPDATE: Here is a full rundown of Apple’s announcements from the tech-friendly folks at Ars Technica.

The Short List: Apple’s Macworld without Steve Jobs

Posted by Joe Bardi on Jan. 6, 2009, at 6:00 am

Today is the keynote address at the Macworld Conference & Expo, an annual Apple-centric trade show. CEO Steve Jobs normally gives the big speech, during which he takes the wraps off Apple’s latest shiny thing (iPhone, iPod, etc.), but this year Steve is a no-show. Speculation about Jobs’ health has become so rampant that the guru/CEO published a letter yesterday explaining that he was not, in fact, dying. Get the latest on Macworld here and here, but first check out this great take on the Apple mystique (and get a first look at the revolutionary Macbook Wheel) from The Onion.
