Simple tips to green your Halloween

Posted by Michelle Schenck on Oct. 15, 2009, at 4:41 pm

greenchocolateHalloween has and always will be one of my favorite holidays. It is the one day of the year that you can actually walk out of your house wearing just about anything and you get a ‘free pass’ on weird or strange looks from neighbors. Hey, anything goes on this day, right?  Not to mention the candy – oh, the candy.

So how can one ‘green‘ up the holiday a bit and teach the neighborhood kids a good lesson about recycling and reducing trash? The famous candy aspect that the kids know and love is a start. Realistically, it is hard to give out any fresh made organic goodies as it has long been taboo to do such a thing with rumors of poisoned candy and the like that has been circling for generations. So, instead, hand out pre-packaged organic candy like the ones found at endangered species chocolate.  Then use a pillow case to hand out the candy, it looks funky and scary and limits the use of the regular plastic containers. The kids will happily be surprised to try something new and tasty that is also better for the environment.

Green beauty products: How to know if they’re the real deal

Posted by Michelle Schenck on Oct. 2, 2009, at 4:16 pm

green beauty guideWhen you go to your local pharmacy and see an array of beauty products, soaps and other toiletries labeled as ‘green’, it might be hard to determine which ones are legitimately organic or natural products and which ones might be exploiting their green efforts.

According to Women’s Health Magazine, most beauty products  that are legitimate green products should be produced with minimal energy, derived from renewable materials, and be a plant-based product.

The best thing to do to weed out these possible exploiters is to carefully read the ingredient label and also see if it has been stamped by a logo certifying its green status.

Some labels to look for include:usda-organic-seal

Chicago ranks number one in the US for most ‘green’ buildings

Posted by Michelle Schenck on Sep. 18, 2009, at 9:36 am

ChicagoAccording to figures from the U.S. Green Building Council, Chicago has the most certified green buildings then any other city in the country. That must be hundreds right? Not really. The council reports that 88 projects in Chicago have earned Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification.

Still, that isn’t too shabby especially since it was reported that in 2007, Chicago had just 27 LEED-certified buildings. That is over three times the amount in only two years. Kudos, Windy City!

So with all these green advancements in the Tampa Bay area, we must  have made the top 10 right? Not yet, but we will hopefully get there in time.

Here are the top ten cities with the most green buildings according to the Chicago Tribune:

How many trees per year are cut down to make phone books?!

Posted by Michelle Schenck on Aug. 31, 2009, at 8:30 am

Once a year on a nice sunny day, you pull up to your house and there is a yellow cellophane bag sitting on your porch with the annual telephone directories inside of it. You sigh. You take it in to your house or apartment and figure out where to put it, never knowing if you will ever actually use it. It collects dust and you usually throw it out in 3 months after you see it wedged in the pantry or under your bed. Sound familiar? You are not alone.

In this computer and tech savvy world, most people generally don’t think to use their phone books anymore as their first source of information. At work or at home, many people will check a telephone number or address through their computer or even more likely, their cell phone.

Plus, these phone books are made from trees. A lot of trees. According to banthephonebook.org, the production of phone books cut down up to 5 million trees each year. That’s a lot of trees to make someone’s makeshift coffee table. Not to mention other costs to taxpayers like added recycling efforts and the financial impact of printing and delivering these bulky information books to your front door or office.

First solar-powered city in the world will be in Southwest Florida

Posted by Michelle Schenck on Aug. 20, 2009, at 1:00 pm

It has been recently announced that the first city in the world to be powered by the sun will be constructed right here in Florida. Babcock Ranch has made an agreement with electric utility company, Florida Power & Light to build the world’s largest photovoltaic power plant. This stepping stone for the green community which is located near Ft. Myers, FL. will also produce thousands of temporary jobs and roughly 20,000 permanent jobs for the state economy.

According to the Sierra Club website, the 17,000 acre city will consume less power than the FPL on-site solar facilities will produce, allowing it to become the first city on earth to be powered by by zero emission solar energy. All of the commercial buildings and homes in Babcock Ranch will be certified as energy efficient by the Florida Green Building Council.

This monthly street festival has truly gained momentum with their green efforts towards this small Pinellas community. Not only do they have local artist displays and great food, they have also gone a step further and introduced other green services such as computer recycling, dead/dying battery recycling, clothing and book swaps. It has even been noted that the Florida Blood Services has been there on more than one occassion.

This monthly festival, which occurs on the fourth Saturday of each month from 10am-5pm, focuses on green and healthy living, as well as eco-consciousness and sustainability. The best thing is, it is free to the public and all ages are encouraged to attend.

Going Green Film Festival now accepting film submissions via the internet

Are you an aspiring filmmaker looking to reduce your carbon footprint but you don’t know how to get started? Then the Going Green Film Festival might be right up your alley.

First and foremost, What is ‘green filmmaking’? According to the festival website, “green filmmaking is a way of producing your film that uses alternative materials, as well as environmentally friendly practices in the production office and on set”. That seems logical enough.

As per the guidelines, films must be made between 2008-2010 and be between 20 to 120 minutes. It doesn’t look like any exceptions will be made with these rules.

There are three different green genres that you can enter your film under:

New eco-friendly paint: Liven up a room without the toxic fumes

Posted by Michelle Schenck on Jul. 24, 2009, at 3:30 pm

Are you moving into a new apartment this fall and contemplating a new shade for your bedroom wall? Are you looking for a fun summer color to rev up your dining room? Why not try the new Freshair Choice paints, a new green line of paint that contains no VOCs (volatile organic compounds) in the paint or in the colorant.

According to their website, Freshair Choice paints are a new advanced colorant technology that dissolves the paint base without expelling any chemical odor (or that “just painted” smell). That sounds good to me as one of the reasons I have avoided painting for a few weeks now is because that “just painted” smell always makes me feel a little off!

USF Botanical Gardens to hold its annual Tropical Plant Fair this weekend

Posted by Michelle Schenck on Jul. 9, 2009, at 8:00 am

Are you pretty wiped out from the partying, barbecuing and fireworks from the Fourth of July weekend? What other way to spend this coming weekend then to peacefully stroll through the beautiful Botanical Gardens at USF. Admittedly, when I was a graduate student there a few years back, I would see signs for the Botanical Gardens and always promised myself I would go, but haven’t until only very recently.

Kept up by the Department of Geography at the University and from generous donations from visiting and membership opportunities, the Botanical Gardens take you away from the city for a few moments to explore natural beauty from scenic plant life to small animals, insects and even birds. It is the perfect way to spend a relaxing afternoon before the hustle and bustle of the Tampa nightlife sets off.

Red, white and green: how to have an eco-friendly Fourth of July

Posted by Michelle Schenck on Jul. 2, 2009, at 4:54 pm

A lot of people get excited for the Fourth of July celebrations. Hot dogs, fireworks, a possible day off, friends and family are all fun associations that come with the celebration of America’s independence. Here are some tips to stay green while letting loose and having a great holiday weekend.

Bring your own flatware or use the reuseable kind:

If you are planning on attending a Fourth of July party, bring your own cup, plate and silverware with you. This way you save on excess waste while also being able to spark up a conversation piece when people ask you where you got your plate from. You may get some other people into the habit of doing the same. If you are the one hosting the party, save some money and the environment by laying out all reusable silverware, cups, tableclothes, etc.

How to stay green on the road this summer

Posted by Michelle Schenck on Jun. 26, 2009, at 1:00 pm

I am jumping in the car this weekend and hitting the road with some friends to do some white water rafting in Tennessee. This got me thinking about ways to conserve and stay green while I am in the car for upwards of 10 hours. Some people think of vacation and their normal routine might get thrown out the window. Fast food, speeding, and anything goes, right? Although that sometimes sounds good in theory, whenever I just ‘let it all hang out’, I ended up feeling guilty in the end for eating greasy food and being too excessive. This doesn’t mean, though, that you can’t have fun on the road. Actually quite the opposite. Check out a few simple ways to stay green on the road, feel good and have a kick ass time!

The Derby Darlins have a successful first green event with T.R.E.E. at Little Bayou Park

Posted by Michelle Schenck on Jun. 22, 2009, at 8:00 am

The Tampa Bay Derby Darlins had their first official green event take place at Little Bayou Park, in St. Petersburg, this past Saturday morning. Teaming up with the super fun and cool people at T.R.E.E. (Tampa Bay Reforestation and Environmental Effort, Inc.) the Darlins planted over 100 native trees at the Park in a record time.

With about a 20 minute introduction from T.R.E.E. representatives about how big to dig the holes for the trees and how to fill them in properly and top with mulch, the girls were off and running with shovels in hands in groups to get started. Some of the T.R.E.E. reps mentioned how this was one of the most humid days they have ever done a planting, but no one seemed to complain about the weather as everyone knew that there was important work to be done.

Seven-story “carbon clock” launched near Madison Square Garden in NYC

Posted by Michelle Schenck on Jun. 20, 2009, at 8:00 am

It seems New York City has counters for everything these days. The famous debt clock, and now, a new ‘carbon clock’ was resurrected this past Thursday near Madison Square Garden and Penn Station. It counts the total amount of greenhouse gases that are trapped inside the Earth’s atmosphere.

According to Scientific American, the counter takes into account all greenhouse gases, including carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide, and reports them in carbon dioxide equivalents. It skips the effects of natural cycles, such as the El Niño, and doesn’t factor in aerosols, which are difficult to measure and also exert a cooling effect.

How do you confront others about their green missteps (and your pet peeves)?

Posted by Michelle Schenck on Jun. 17, 2009, at 1:00 pm

Everyone has a pet peeve or two. It is common to get slightly annoyed with a member of the human race every now and again, even if it is something small, like the way way a person slurps their cup of morning joe or the last person in the bathroom not replacing the toilet paper roll. It is the way that you confront and handle these matters, if at all, that turns these pet peeves into issues.

For example, when I was a little girl, I used to see a family member (they shall remain nameless) leave the water faucet on while doing the dishes. She or he would start to wash a dish, walk away to do something else, and then come back. I didn’t understand why they didn’t just turn the water off if they were going to step away for 15-20 seconds at a time? It seemed like such a huge waste of water even at a young age when the words “green” didn’t really mean much to me.

The Florida Aquarium teams up with Mise en Place to introduce a sustainable seafood menu (Pictures)

Posted by Michelle Schenck on Jun. 12, 2009, at 7:00 am

The Florida Aquarium and Mise en Place are partnering up to raise awareness for World Ocean Day by offering a special sustainable seafood menu for two weeks at the restaurant. Beginning the week of June 8th, Mise will donate $3 for each sustainable seafood three-course meal, which will cost $35, or $5 for each dinner with a wine purchase until Saturday, June 20th, to benefit the aquarium’s Marine Science Conversation and Education programs.

What is sustainable seafood and why is this important? Tom Wagner, the Public Relations manager at the Aquarium, explains that “Sustainable seafood is about becoming educated about where the fish you eat is coming from, how it is being caught, and making sure there is enough of the particular fish to be able to keep reproducing in the oceans”. Overfishing, as Tom explained, is one type of problem that has become hazardous to our ecosystem. Overfishing stems from the fish being caught before they are of reproductive age, thus making that fish stock below normal levels and overall effecting the the marine ecosystem.

Get dad into the green: Have an organic Father’s Day (Pictures)

Posted by Michelle Schenck on Jun. 6, 2009, at 8:00 am

Father’s Day will be here sooner then you realize (June 21st) and picking up the perfect gift can be a little difficult, maybe even more so then for Mother’s Day in some cases. If your father is anything like mine, there doesn’t seem to be much that I haven’t gotten him. I have done the watch route, the tie, the Brooks Brothers gift card, the sports memorabilia and now that I am *cough* a smidge older than my teens and early 20’s, the ideas seem less and less original.

So why not try some fun, new green products for dad? Even though some of them are Father’s Day staples, you can explain (and impress) him about how it is organic and reasons to go eco-friendly. What better time then the beginning of the summer to try out some of these new products.

Enter to win $20,000 to green your neighborhood

Posted by Michelle Schenck on Jun. 4, 2009, at 8:00 am

Sun Chips and National Geographic have teamed up to hear stories about why you want to make your neighborhood greener. The best part is, they are offering five winners $20,000 towards their community green idea! The five winners they chose will be featured in National Geographic and flown out to D.C. to discuss their ideas with environmental leaders. How cool is that?

The contest isn’t too daunting either as they just request you to write a short essay between 100-250 words about your eco-idea and send it in! Easy peasey! If you are feeling an extra flair of creativity, you may also submit an optional video or pictures but it is not mandatory.

You have to hurry a bit, though, as the contest ends submissions on June 8th! So get your minds racking and think of some green ideas! Living in Florida surrounded by the ocean, urban travel, droughts, wildlife, etc., we can all come up with a zillion ideas! (P.S.-you can even comment on other people’s submission ideas. Be nice people, we are trying to bring the moohla to the Tampa Bay Area!)

So submit away and good luck! You may just be the next person to bring some green policy change to your community!

For contest rules and submission information, please go here.

VP Biden boosts green jobs and training in Denver

Posted by Michelle Schenck on May. 28, 2009, at 1:00 pm

Vice President Joe Biden released plans for a national program on Tuesday at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science to focus on training workers for the “green job market”. These green jobs will focus on making public housing more energy efficient by adding solar panels and manufacturing wind turbines.

How do they plan on doing all of this in the heat of a recession? He announced that $500 million from the economic stimulus bill will be used to retrain people who now live in low-income housing for green jobs. He went on by saying that the stimulus bill will create 450,000 new green jobs. Read the rest of this entry »

Green lodging in Tampa: local eco-friendly hotels

Posted by Michelle Schenck on May. 22, 2009, at 8:00 am

What the heck is “green lodging”? That might be the first question someone asks when clicking on this post. In a nutshell, green lodging are hotels that are making a conscious effort to lower their water and energy uses, reducing waste and promoting various other green efforts that work specifically for their hotel. Some of the ways of doing this include introducing and encouraging recycling programs of traditional items (plastic, paper, etc.) and of towels and sheets, installing energy efficient lightning, and promoting contributions back to their local communities.

The Florida Green Lodging program, established in 2004, has set forth a set of guidelines for hotels that are interested in becoming more eco-friendly. On their website, they give eight steps to becoming a designated property with their organization, like creating a “green team” with employees at the property and creating a leader to oversee all of the changes that the hotel will make. They find it especially important to educate the staff about the importance of conservation. Read the rest of this entry »

Posted by Michelle Schenck on May. 20, 2009, at 8:00 am

With cell phone providers trying to one-up each other anyway they can these days, it seems Sprint has taken a higher road of one upping by launching a new green line of products and also an additional green website in conjunction with their traditional website. (All jokes aside, Sprint has been promoting cell phone recycling for eight years now.)

So what kind of funky new gadgets can we be expecting? One of the highly anticipated products that is generating buzz in the green scene is the new Sprint Solio Mono Hybrid charger which allows a user to recharge a battery from solar energy as well as through a wall unit. Bringing home the gold: Tampa’s initiatives to become a more sustainably green city

Posted by Michelle Schenck on May. 13, 2009, at 6:30 am

Earlier this year, Pam Iorio announced the City’s Gold-level certified Green Local Government designation by the Florida Green Building Coaliton (FGBC). Tampa was only the second city to achieve this award in Florida (Tallahassee was the first) and the local government is wasting no time in starting to get the city on its way to creating greener pastures.

The city initiatives outlined on the Tampa government’s new Green website is focusing primarily on pollution control and conservation via air, ground, and water.

Some of the “air” related initiatives include increasing public access throughout the city to recreation and to non-motorized transportation opportunities. Also, you may have noticed articles and ads throughout city news publications promoting new and improved bus service opportunities to various business parks, downtown locations, and to the Tampa International Airport. These are Tampa’s initial attempts at trying to boost the public transit system that has been heavily scrutinized by residents (with good reason). HART itself has even begun promoting its new Green vision for its company as well in hopes it can join Tampa’s efforts and promote the use of public transit and commuting. Join in on the IKEA craze: an eco-friendly contest with the famous IKEA blue bag

Posted by Michelle Schenck on May. 7, 2009, at 1:00 pm

Between free chicken at KFC and IKEA’s new grand opening near Ybor City, a lot of people are getting fried (no pun intended) by all the line waiting and excitement overload in Tampa this week.

Well, IKEA is having a fun, eco-friendly contest that you can create in the comfort of your own home but still get a little bit of that IKEA craving curbed for at least a few moments.

The new contest entitled, “Where has your blue bag been?” is an opportunity to share with the IKEA community photos, videos, or even blogs (me me me!) of how you may use or wish to use one of the IKEA blue bags. (Incidentally, for anyone who doesn’t know, the IKEA blue bags are the reusable shopping bags that you can carry throughout the store to put your super cool stuff in and can purchase for 59 cents.) Hewlett-Packard offers you green to go green

Posted by Michelle Schenck on Apr. 23, 2009, at 6:00 am

Hewlett Packard is joining the green race even a step further by offering hard earned cash for all of your old computer products including monitors, keyboards, and even printers and smartphones. To entice consumers even further, they offer a buyback quote directly on their website to see how much green you will actually get back in return for your aging products instead of calling around or emailing the company, i.e. wasting your time.

Discouraged that your ten year old broken keyboard isn’t worth a dime anymore? Don’t worry! HP also offers free recycling for HP and Compaq products. For other non-HP and Compaq products, there is only a small fee. There is still hope for that old keyboard yet!

Still have a few more questions? Check out the frequently asked questions section of their website and get your free quote today! Why not make a little extra money for something that you planned on getting rid of anyways? It is smart for the environment and for your wallet. What could be better than that?

Tampa Derby Darlins go from black and blue to green

Posted by Michelle Schenck on Apr. 20, 2009, at 12:00 pm

The Tampa Bay Derby Darlins have always been known for their super athleticism, rough and tough exterior, and bringing fun to the sport of skating in Tampa. Even though you don’t want to necessarily meet these girls in a dark alley, you can better believe when it comes to taking care of the environment, they are just as passionate as when they are on the rink.

With the onset of the new Green Committee established in the league by members Lunch Lady and Ninja Monkey, the girls are grouping together to bring recycling bins to their home games, planting trees to offset their travel cost emissions, and obtaining volunteers for green efforts such as the Great American Clean Up in Tampa. They are setting a good example for local sports leagues across the nation to do their part for the environment with a few fun and simple ideas. All of the girls are very excited to participate in the national effort to save the environment and hope that their example will stick with a few of their fans and fellow sports leagues alike. Starting a recycling program at work- free and easy

Posted by Michelle Schenck on Apr. 19, 2009, at 6:00 am

When I first came to my law office in the Westshore district of Tampa five years ago, there were no recycle bins anywhere to be found. Most people in the office did not really think much of it and never really inquired about it. I thought this was a bit odd since this was a ten story building housing many offices that use tons of copy paper on a regular basis.

Low and behold, after one phone call to Property Management, we found out that there is in fact recycling for the building and it was a free service when requested by an office! When they brought up the paper recycling bins just a day later,  I was ecstatic. Then I thought of all of the sodas and cups we use daily for clients and staff and wondered if they also had recycling bins for aluminum and plastics. They did, and it was also a free service for the building when requested.

So next time you are in your office and you are annoyed that you have to throw that piece of paper in the garbage because there is no recycling in your building, make sure you double check with management if there is recycling available- they may surprise you. If they say no, inquire to them about looking into a recycling program for your office. Within a few weeks, you may have just started a new, eco-friendly trend at work.

Earth Day on April 22: What’s happening?

Posted by Michelle Schenck on Apr. 8, 2009, at 9:23 pm

It has been almost 30 years since the first annual Earth Day celebration kicked off in the U.S. on its annual April 22nd date. It seems as every year passes, more and more people are “going green” with more readily available educational classes/workshops, consumer products, and organic foods to help them on their quest of saving the earth one recycled can at a time. Even Clorox has a “Greenworks” line that has hit grocery stores recently. If a bleach company can attempt to be more eco-friendly, can’t we all try to do our small part?

So what is happening in Tampa for the big day?

Check out the Earth Friendly Sierra Club’s website for some good local family-friendly Earth Day action.

If you are interested in organic food growth and learning more about healthy-eating and nature based crafts, check out local events going on in the Tampa Bay Area at the Local Harvest website.
