A lack of sleep cock-blocks domestic partners

Posted by Shawn Alff on Mar. 15, 2010, at 2:16 pm

sleep sexA recent study by the National Sleep Foundation found that 25% of Americans who live with their spouses or partners use “a lack of sleep” as an excuse for a lack of sex.

Sex wasn’t the only thing inhibited by a bad “sleep life.” Americans also used a lack of sleep as an excuse for Read the rest of this entry »

Your sex life dies at 70

Posted by Shawn Alff on Mar. 10, 2010, at 1:04 pm

bobdole-woodAs reported by businessweek.com, a new study in The British Medical Journal finds that your sex life usually dies by 70.

Sex for men usually ends around 65 while most women stop having sex around 61. These estimations are based on a mid 90s survey of 3,000 men and women between 25 and 74, and a mid 00s survey of 3,000 men and women between 57 and 85.

Sex for paraplegics

Posted by Shawn Alff on Mar. 3, 2010, at 8:30 am

Larry-FlyntWhenever I see a paraplegic dating, I can’t help but wonder  how these people have sex. Unfortunately the particulars of how paraplegics get it on is often a mystery even for many paralysis sufferers.  Writer, Tre Trefethen, recently discussed the sensitive topic on the National Sexuality Resource Center’s website in hopes of coaxing other paralegics to trade sex secrets.

While rehabilitating from his injuries, Trefethen was only given the standard lube job information and the warning not to grip his penis too tightly when it came to sex. The nurse’s reminder that the brain is the largest sex organ was the equivalent of someone with a giant penis assuring you that size doesn’t matter. Read the rest of this entry »

New AIDS drugs have no effect on transmission rates

Posted by Shawn Alff on Feb. 25, 2010, at 10:09 am

stupid_condomsAs originally reported in Reuters, an Australian study found that powerful new AIDS drugs do not reduce transmission rates as previously hoped.

70% of HIV-positive Australian men are currently treated with new drugs that reduce the virus in the blood to such a low level that it’s undetectable in three quarters of these men. Unfortunately, these drugs d0 nothing to reduce transmission rates during unprotected anal sex.

For five years, 1,427 gay and bi-curious men were interviewed twice a year regarding their sexual activities. During this period, 53 men contracted HIV. Read the rest of this entry »

Less is more: new study finds women are having less, but better, sex

Posted by Shawn Alff on Feb. 18, 2010, at 9:20 am

cc-nurseAs reported by The Sun, new research suggests that 75% of British women are having less sex than a year ago, but these encounters are friskier than ever.

This reduction of bedroom play has been blamed, like every other problem in the last decade, on the economy. Some believe couples are working longer hours and don’t have as much time for sex. Financial stress may also hinder their libido.

In any case, this reduction isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Read the rest of this entry »

The hidden market for tighter condoms: loose rubbers cause big problems

Posted by Shawn Alff on Feb. 16, 2010, at 2:14 pm

HugeCondomA recent study by the Kinsey Institute found that men are 50% more likely to discard a condom during sex if it isn’t tight enough. Furthermore, loose condoms greatly increase the risk of STDs and pregnancy.

This study was based on a survey conducted by the journal Sexually Transmitted Infections. Of the 436  men polled, 45% claimed they used condoms that were too large in the past three months. These men were 50% more likely to report condom breaks, slips, difficulty reaching climax, and condom removal halfway through coitus.

The problem is — aside from Magnums which are marketed to men with larger than average penises — most condoms are one-size-fits-all. Variations exist, especially with the rubber’s shape, but no company has ever successfully marketed “small” or “medium” condoms. Why? Because most men already feel insecure that they aren’t buying Magnums. Read the rest of this entry »

New food documentary Forks Over Knives asks, “Can whole foods and a plant-based diet save your life?” (video)

Posted by Katie M. on Feb. 16, 2010, at 1:00 pm

forks_over_knivesThe rise in popularity of environmental food documentaries, such as Food Inc. and Fresh, have opened people’s eyes to the way they’ve been eating, about where and how their food is made. The newest film about our food industry, Forks Over Knives, asks, “What if we could cure sicknesses without medicine? What if our nation’s health crisis could be solved?” This food film focuses on the numerous health problems that our way of eating is causing and how we can reverse the damage we’re doing to our bodies – simply by changing our diets and rejecting our present menu of animal-based and processed foods.

Religion-free abstinence-only sex-ed may forestall sexual initiation

Posted by Shawn Alff on Feb. 15, 2010, at 4:04 pm

cc-condomsOriginally reported by the New York Times, a new study of over 600 12-year-old, at-risk students, found that religion-free abstinence-only sex-ed programs may delay students’ initiation into sex.

In this research, led by Dr. John B. Jemmott III of the University of Pennsylvania, only about a third of participants in a weekend abstinence-only course started having sex within the following two years, compared to half of those randomly assigned to general health classes and  safe-sex only courses. About 42% of those assigned to comprehensive sex-ed classes had sex within two years. The study also discovered that none of the programs influenced rates of unprotected sex. A tribute to my second mom

Posted by Chris Humpherys on Feb. 2, 2010, at 2:33 pm

Sox Yanks

Warning. This is not a post about sports. It is, but it’s not.

It’s not a breakdown of the upcoming Super Bowl XLIV, a spring training preview, a mid-season NBA review or a Tiger Woods wherefore-art-thou piece.

This is a post about love, life, family and passing. So please, if you’re not in the mood to shed a tear, turn away now. I won’t mind. But if you do feel like celebrating the life of someone very special, by all means read on.

I’ll wait while you get some tissue.

My best friend’s mother passed away last week. This is a woman who was my mother’s best friend for 40 years, a woman who helped raise me. This is a loving, caring soul who had a profound impact on my life.

When I was only a few years old, we lived in Freehold, New Jersey. Yes, the hometown of one Bruce Springsteen.

Bus crash FreeholdOne morning, out of the blue, a school bus crashed into the side of our house. Miraculously, nobody was injured, but from that accident came several lifelong friendships. A woman came over to my house that day and asked if there was anything she could do to help in our time of need. Natalie and my mother had been best friends ever since. Forty years of ups and downs, laughter and tears, good times and bad.

Years after the bus crash, mom and I were living in Manhattan, but the cost of living in the city was too much for a struggling, single journalist to afford. It was Natalie who once again came to our rescue, taking us in despite the fact that she herself was broke.

Sunlight as a natural aphrodisiac and testosterone boost

Posted by Shawn Alff on Feb. 2, 2010, at 1:56 pm

douchebagsA recent study by the Austrian Medical University of Graz found that sun exposure boosts testosterone levels in men.

Sunlight is responsible for 90% of the body’s supply of Vitamin D, which can be absorbed in smaller amounts through vitamins, meat, and oily fish. Graz researchers discovered that as Vitamin D increases, so does testosterone.

Testosterone is the primary sex hormone for males, appearing in men at forty to sixty times the rate that it does in females. It controls a number of functions in men’s health, including muscle growth, bone density, linear growth, the development of secondary sex characteristics, mental and physical energy, libido, and erectile function. Abstinence-only programs blamed for sudden rise in teen pregnancy

Posted by Shawn Alff on Jan. 28, 2010, at 4:07 pm

teen pregnancyNew data from the federally funded Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, compiled by the Guttmacher Institute, reveals that pregnancies for 15 to 19-year-olds rose 3 percent between 2005-2006—the first increase in teen pregnancies in over a decade. Teens are now getting pregnant at higher rates than before the 1990s.

As reported by The Washington Post:

The abortion rate among teenagers rose 1 percent in 2006 from the previous year — to 19.3 abortions per 1,000 women in that age group. Taking that and miscarriages into account… the pregnancy rate among U.S. women younger than 20 in 2006 was 71.5 per 1,000 women, a 3 percent increase from the rate of 69.5 in 2005. That translated into 743,000 pregnancies among teenagers, or about 7 percent of women in this age group. Read the rest of this entry »

A local gal’s love and know-how for natural remedies

Posted by Carla Alonso on Jan. 27, 2010, at 3:51 pm

natural_remedies

Twenty-four year old Kristal Roberts is quite the health guru when it comes to ailments and natural remedies.

Born in New York and raised in Florida, Roberts was brought up by Jamaican parents who used natural remedies to cure simple illnesses.

Her mother, Gretel Roberts, was raised in “the bush” countryside of Jamaica. “She came from a place where access to doctors was very limited,” Roberts said, “so my family improvised and made their own remedies.”

Stories have been passed down from generation to generation within Roberts’ family about miraculous cures from natural remedies. On one occasion Roberts’ uncle knocked over a kettle of wood, burning his face. Roberts’ great grandmother quickly commanded someone to go to the beach and fetch a seashell, which was supposed to cure burns. Once she had the seashell, she ground it into a fine dust and brushed the powder on his wound. After a few days, the wound was gone, without the slightest hint of a scar.

These types of stories inspire Roberts to discover more natural remedies and to pass on her knowledge to close friends and loved ones. Read the rest of this entry »

Reunited and it feels so good: alcohol and I are back together

Posted by Caitlin Reagan on Jan. 19, 2010, at 2:45 pm

Drunk GirlAs an update on my New Year’s resolution, I regret to inform you that Alcohol and I got back together. Yes, I broke it off two weeks ago because we were headed in different directions. Alcohol did not support my desire to achieve a strong midsection, so I told Alcohol that I needed a break.

Needless to say, this breakup was one of the toughest I’d ever experienced. You see, Alcohol and I have a lot of mutual friends. And after a few nights out post-breakup, it was clear to me that if I said goodbye to Alcohol, I was also going to have to say goodbye to my evenings with friends. Alcohol can be quite a flirt. Combine that with my jealous tendencies and a night out can be disastrous. I expected this, of course but what I wasn’t prepared for was Read the rest of this entry »

Rock wall climbing: more than just physical ability

Posted by Caitlin Reagan on Jan. 18, 2010, at 1:30 pm

rock wallOne of my favorite aspects of fitness is the lack of brainpower involved. Before I lose you, just hear me out on this one. If you factor out the basic mental necessities to execute the action (such as common sense) it truly doesn’t take a significant amount of thought to break a sweat. Studies have even shown that humans are able to switch off the conscious mind and fall into a meditation-like state where the imagination flourishes.

Nike puts it best in their famous slogan “Just do it.” But that’s exactly how fitness works. You just do it. Because if you think about it too much, you’ll freeze up and in a matter of seconds your mental power will beat your physical power. And that’s exactly what happened to me the night I tried wall climbing.

Vertical Ventures in Tampa offers half-price climbing and shoe rentals on Tuesday nights. I was 14 years old the last time I went rock climbing, but that type of climbing included ropes and harnesses. This type of climbing only requires special shoes and chalk (for your hands).  You rely solely on your body’s strength and believe me when I say this: Read the rest of this entry »

New Year’s resolution: abs, please!

Posted by Caitlin Reagan on Jan. 5, 2010, at 1:52 pm

absIf I had to name one aspect of my body that I’ve never been able to perfect, I would choose my midsection. Flat? Yes. Strong? Not exactly. For my 2010 New Year’s resolution, I’d like to adjust my diet and reevaluate my gym routine to achieve rock-hard abs that I’ve never had before.

Already, I run close to 15 miles a week and that is not including the other cardio-intensive activities I’m involved in, like spin classes or tennis. It would be pretty safe to say that I lead a very active lifestyle.

My legs and arms are in great shape. I feel very strong and balanced, but when it comes time to show off my abs well, let’s just say it’s rather disappointing.

“You should pick up yoga again,” Catherine said.  Catherine, my roommate in college, spends three hours a week in yoga classes and, while she might be right that yoga includes several positions and stances that whip your abs into shape, I think my dilemma is beyond fitness.

Since making this decision, I’ve realized that I need to face the cold, hard truth that I’ve been avoiding for quite a while: Read the rest of this entry »

Disc golf: a (free) afternoon with nature

Posted by Caitlin Reagan on Jan. 4, 2010, at 1:45 pm

disc golf 2“It’s pretty hippie-dippie,” he said as he turned the steering wheel, pulling off the paved road and onto a dirt path.

What I really wanted to do that afternoon was just throw a Frisbee back and forth, and when I called my friend Zach to see if he’d be interested, he suggested disc golf instead.

“Just throw it,” Zach said as he skillfully thrust his arm across his body and released a perfectly floating disc into the sky.

There I stood in a community park holding a heavy, rubber disc looking around and feeling completely inadequate.  Sure, I’d thrown a Frisbee before but this was much different.  It was heavier, slimmer, smaller and looked as if it would cause quite a bit of damage if aimed for say, a car window, a lamppost, or even my head.

The game is similar to traditional golf but instead of a set of clubs and balls, Read the rest of this entry »

Remembering the true spirit of the holiday season

Posted by Kelly Rothwell on Dec. 22, 2009, at 12:00 pm

Christmas-backgroundThis time of the year is filled with busy plans to enjoy our family and friends, to connect with them and share our love and appreciation for one another.  It is also a time to open our hearts to others and share our abundance with those in need.  It seems as though many get caught up in buying presents and the stress that comes with cramming too much into too little time and expecting too much of ourselves. We over schedule our time for holiday parties, shopping and travel.

Let us not forget the spirit of the season. It is not about giving the best gift or overindulging in holiday goodies and champagne. The spirit of this time of the year is about opening our hearts to one another. It is about loving and appreciating our family, friends and all of the abundance in our lives no matter what our current environment is offering as far as challenges. It is about being a good person, being forgiving and compassionate, about sharing random good deeds with others to lift their spirits.

Let’s get physical: how I learned to nix old habits (like Five Guys burgers)

Posted by Caitlin Reagan on Dec. 14, 2009, at 2:45 pm

junkfood_01Contrary to popular belief, college is nothing but a four-year vacation. Where else can thousands of people in a four-year age bracket eat, sleep, drink, and socialize to excess? And please note that when I use the term “socialize,” this includes studying — because we all know the truth about those Monday evening study groups. They always manifest into full-blown gossip sessions.

With that said, after my four-year vacation, I decided to rearrange my entire lifestyle. I found myself 10 plus pounds over my ideal weight, dangerously broke, and eating in a life-threatening diet—Papa John’s pizza, loaded cheese fries, and way too much macaroni and cheese.

So, I took charge. The first leftover habit I shed was my ability to drink nearly six days a week. This doesn’t mean I dropped alcohol from my diet completely—heck no, that’s insane—instead I simply limited my consumption. The best way to do this was to move back in with my parents. Drastic, yes, and I may be stretching the truth just a bit here but I knew one thing: Read the rest of this entry »

World AIDS Day observance: A free 3-day filmfest featuring Rent, Jeffrey and more

Posted by David Warner on Dec. 1, 2009, at 2:57 pm

rentToday, Dec. 1, is World AIDS Day, an occasion to reflect both on the progress that has been made in the fight against HIV/AIDS and on the work that still needs to be done.  Yesterday’s  St. Pete Times report on Florida AIDS statistics was a sobering reminder of the latter — especially of the disproportionate impact the disease has had on African-Americans. Consider these stats from John Barry’s story:

About one of every 60 black men in Pinellas and Hillsborough counties has HIV/AIDS, compared with about one of every 160 white men. The death rate among black men is almost seven times higher than among white men.

About one of every 100 black women in Florida is infected, compared with about one of every 1,000 white women. Black women account for 70 percent of women’s infections, though they make up only 16 percent of the female population. About 85 percent of these women are infected through heterosexual sex.

Observances around the world will stress the importance of prevention and testing; the treatments that are allowing  millions to live with HIV; and the need to get those medicines to disadvantaged populations.

Today is also a day to remember the human impact of  the disease, as evidenced in countless stories of  love, loss and survival. Filmmakers have played a big role over the last two decades in telling those stories, so  Metro Charities, the Tampa Gay & Lesbian International Film Festival and the Flamingo Resort in St. Petersburg have joined together to present a free three-day film festival at the Resort featuring “6 of the best HIV/AIDS Films of the past 20 years.” Read the rest of this entry »

Insecticides linked to increased risk of lupus and rheumatoid arthritis in women

Posted by Katie M. on Nov. 30, 2009, at 4:30 pm

InsecticidesA recent study on the link between pesticide usage and autoimmune diseases in women showed that, of the 75,000 women studied, those who use insecticides six or more times a year had almost two-and-a-half times the risk of contracting lupus and rheumatoid arthritis – compared to those who didn’t use bug spray in their households.

This number more than doubled if the women had been using pesticides in their homes for more than 20 years. Having one’s home or lawn sprayed with insecticides over a long period of time doubled the risk as well.

Christine G. Parks, PhD, an epidemiologist with the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences in Research, stated, “Our new results provide support for the idea that environmental factors may increase susceptibility or trigger the development of autoimmune diseases in some individuals.”

Mammogram controversy and using safer alternatives for breast exams

Posted by Carol Roberts on Nov. 24, 2009, at 12:30 pm

mammogramSo what’s this about mammograms? The iconic breast screening exam has been called into question by a stellar panel from Harvard, Stanford and other such institutions who were tasked by the federal government to determine the efficacy and safety of the test.

So for decades now, the ladies have been lining up to have “the girls” squished, pinched, squeezed and radiated, in the hope that such treatment will result in early detection and improved survival. Instead, this new information is asserting that mammograms do not improve survival and are contributing to rising costs of healthcare by identifying many lumps that aren’t cancer or will never become cancer. So younger women, in the 40-49 year age group, are told they no longer need to have any mammos at all, and are even exhorted to not examine their own breasts for fear of finding something. Suddenly the fear and expense generated by “false positives” are outweighing the fear and expense of the real thing. Confusion reigns! Read the rest of this entry »

Apps help the disabled communicate. So why won’t Medicaid pay for them?

Posted by Sarah Gerard on Nov. 17, 2009, at 12:06 pm

appblog

Technology gets more amazing every day. Satellites guide us from our driveways all the way to a grocery store in Ohio. A webcam enables a soldier in Afghanistan to talk face-to-face with his wife in Nebraska. And a new wave of iPhone apps allows individuals with disabilities to communicate with others — some, for the very first time.

At 235 megabytes, Proloquo2Go turns a standard iPhone into a fully functional augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) device. Co-designed by Penn State doctoral student Samuel Sennott and carried by iPhone app developer AssistiveWare, Proloquo2Go “provides a full-featured communication solution for people who have difficulty speaking,” such as individuals with autism, Lou-Gehrig’s Disease, Down syndrome or cerebral palsy. Like any other AAC device, it combines symbols, words, sounds and technology (source) to guide its user through an intuitive, hierarchical system of sentence-building software. Added to that, it hosts a minimum vocabulary of 7,000 words and life-like voices — and, at approximately $150 (not including the iPhone), costs a fraction of the $8,000- $10,000 families pay for cumbersome text-to-speech machines. Group fitness: a lot like a Friday night

The pounding headache, the unsteady vision, and the smeared mascara under my eyes confirms that I, Caitlin Reagan, had lived my Friday night to its fullest potential.  After one cup of coffee, two aspirin, one bowl of cereal, four glasses of water and a quick drive across Gandy Bridge, I found myself standing in the group fitness room of the YMCA beginning a 90-minute cardio-strength conditioning class.

“Up, down, up, down, alright everyone! Go! Go! Push it!” the instructor yelled to everyone.  Her motivation was unusual — the demeanor of a pyramid-schemer.  She was sly, steadfast, and domineering all while maintaining her smile and composure.

With my flushed cheeks and Sir-Mix-A-Lot thumping through the speakers, I fist-pumped one dumbbell back and forth in a squat all while trying to ignore the water fountain in the back of the room.

Humorously, I thought how oddly similar a group fitness class reminded me of the night before — a Friday evening full of friends, booze, and bars. Read the rest of this entry »

Remind me again — why am I running this charity 5K?

Posted by Caitlin Reagan on Nov. 5, 2009, at 4:44 pm

halloween raceOn Halloween, I was hopelessly spending most of the day huddled in my apartment researching the United States’ media coverage on Iran. I had purposely not made plans to celebrate the evening dressed as media sensation Balloon Boy, a firefighter with red-hot lipstick and heels, or even a cat. Instead, six weeks prior, I’d committed myself to the Hob Gobl’n 5K Race, hosted by the Dunedin House of Beer.

For about 30 bucks, I agreed to run 3.1 miles in exchange for three beers of my choice, a t-shirt, and a wonderful spaghetti and meatball dinner. Oh, and a portion of my $30 went to the Dunedin Doggie Rescue — but that wasn’t the best part. The best part was that runners were not required to wear a costume.

I suckered my classmate Manny into running in the event, too. While the purpose of my participation was to avoid the annual Halloween costume stress, Manny signed up because — well, I don’t know exactly why he participated, especially since he treated the entire event as though it were a brisk walk down a scenic trail. Marijuana and the male orgasm

Posted by Miss Ginger Millay on Oct. 29, 2009, at 10:29 pm

Man-Smoking-Joint-001“Oh yeah, oh yeah… omigod, I’m so close. I wish I had some beer, but I wanna come. Ooo, I want a burrito. Why can’t I come?!”

Sound familiar? An Australian study has found that men who smoke marijuana on a regular basis are four times more likely to have difficulty reaching orgasm than men who don’t smoke. The same study also discovered that potheads experience premature ejaculation at three times the rate of non-smokers. What gives? Read the rest of this entry »

Fall into fitness and enjoy Mother Nature while you’re at it

Posted by Kelly Rothwell on Oct. 29, 2009, at 3:57 pm

Fall is the time of the year when we begin to prepare for Winter and the many holidays to come over the next several months. Take time for yourself this fall and step up your fitness program in preparation for the upcoming holiday beachrunnerseason.  Whether you are beginning your fitness program or stepping up your program, additional calorie burn and muscle toning will keep you in check this holiday season.  Exercise assists us in keeping our weight and body fat in balance as well as our stress levels.

With the fall weather finally here, it is a great time to get outside. Enjoy the weather by running or walking along the beach or the water.  Being by the water and on the sand is beneficial in many ways. The sand on the beach adds more difficulty which adds to your calorie burn. The change of scenery sure beats the view from the treadmill and makes your run much more enjoyable. Exercise is such a great release mentally, so achieving this experience in the presence of the elements assists you in the release leaving you feeling balanced and grounded.

My First Marathon: Chicago Marathon 2009

Posted by Jen Morgan on Oct. 29, 2009, at 11:31 am

520+ – Miles Ran
16+ – Weeks of Training
10+ – lbs lost
8 – Toenails Lost
2 – Pairs of Shoes
1 - Bra Size
1 – Officially diagnosed reoccurring injury (ITB)

All this to run 26.2.

Leaving my hotel race morning, I stepped out onto an all but deserted street and began my lone pilgrimage to Grant Park, my heart all aflutter. Turning onto Michigan Ave I beheld the most amazing view of the city all aglow in the early morning, the street lined with runners, looks of determination, anticipation and a healthy dose of fear across their faces.

Start Corral - Upon arriving, I quickly found the open start corral and fell into the mid-nine-minute mile section. It was a balmy 33 degrees and this Florida girl was not prepared for the temps. I shivered and tried in vain to stay warm by chatting up the other runners. As the gun went off the crowd surged forward and “throw away” clothes exploded into the air and rained down around us. It was GO time.

Start – Mile 5 – As I crossed the start line I couldn’t help but get caught up in the moment; I screamed, I jumped up and down and I waved my hands up in the air like I just didn’t care. 26.2 lay before me and I was awestruck by the sights and the sounds of the city before me, the spectators all around. It was sensory overload and I relished in every moment of it! As we entered a tunnel, the sound of runners screaming and feet pounding the pavement was deafening. You could power the world over for days with the energy bouncing off those walls. By chance alone I managed to see my cousin Michelle and Beth around the two mile mark and it fired me up 10 times more than I already was; I was really doing this, I was running the Chicago Marathon. In that moment I realized Read the rest of this entry »

Itty bitty titty committee (part one)

Posted by Miss Ginger Millay on Oct. 13, 2009, at 11:12 pm

boobs.largerAs a child, I spent many afternoons with Playboy magazines I found in my parents’ bathroom. I would hide one in my waistband, climb a tree, and find a comfortable spot to sit and flip through the pages. I didn’t read the articles, but rather stared at the big-breasted women coyly looking back at me.

I was thrilled at the prospect of growing up to look like these women. As they were the only naked ladies I’d ever seen, it only made sense that all women had these magnificent boobies. I eagerly awaited the day my own chest would blossom. 15 years later, I’m still waiting. Read the rest of this entry »

How a running injury is like a bad break up

Posted by Beth Shaw on Oct. 6, 2009, at 11:51 am

Love on the rocks
Ain’t no surprise
Pour me a drink
And I’ll sell you some lies
Got nothing to lose
So you just sing the blues all the time
-Neil Diamond

If you have been dumped then you know how bad it sucks. If you have never been there, then you are one lucky son-of-a-bitch.cupid_450

About four weeks ago I was in heavy training mode for the Marine Corps Marathon. I was at 18 miles of a 22-mile training run  and it happened. I got tendonitis in my lower ankle/foot. I was out for about four weeks and had to make the decision to defer the race. My weeks away from running were like a bad break up.

Here’s my reasoning, assuming you are the dumpee and Running is the dumper: You meet running and at first you aren’t real impressed with it. It’s a little tough to get to know him/her. But you do. And you start spending a lot of time together. You spend money on Running, taking it out to fancy stores and locations. You woo it with your fancy clothes and gadgets. You even buy it lots of delicious Italian dinners. You fall in love with Running and think it feels the same way about you.

You become obsessed with Running. You think about it all the time. You doodle its name with little hearts on your checkbook while balancing it. You think you and Running will never break up. You + Running = Forever.

But then it happens. Read the rest of this entry »
