TV Review: V, ”A Bright New Day”

Posted by Rabid Nick Refer on Nov. 18, 2009, at 12:48 pm

vMystery and intrigue were dripping from the alien’s mothership in the third episode of ABC TV’s V reboot. Well, not literally, but follow me: Last week’s episode had an overall them of “you can’t trust anyone.” This week’s installment not only continued that theme, but offered some surprising examples of it in action.

TV Review: V,”There is No Normal Anymore”

Posted by Rabid Nick Refer on Nov. 12, 2009, at 3:34 pm

v-episode2The new ABC Sci-fi drama V returned for it’s second installment and picked up directly where the first left off. Although it didn’t suffer from similar pacing issues as the pilot, the second episode didn’t exactly expand much into anything worth raving about either. What is very interesting, however, is the drama the prime-time event is causing in our own world, outside of the fictional television setting.

TV Review: V, “Pilot”

Posted by Rabid Nick Refer on Nov. 4, 2009, at 1:18 pm

vThe visitors have returned to Earth, and this time they’re bringing more intrigue and drama to prime-time TV. V is a science fiction reboot that debuted this week on ABC after a load of publicity and excitement. The original was a major event over on NBC during the ‘80s, and the mouse house’s flagship network is hoping for similar results with this update. The premiere episode landed Tuesday night, but did it live up to the hype?

It Happened This Week-ish: Lost Housewives, Tina Fey’s virginity, Taylor Lautner is still underage, John & Jen are back on

Posted by Amanda Allwood on Oct. 19, 2009, at 11:29 am

Taylor Lautner in GQ.

*I loved the ABC crossover promos as much as everyone else, but the Lost plane crashing onto Desperate Housewives?! Sorry ABC, that is not going to make me watch Terri Hatcher’s skeletal frame neurotically wash dishes while some other woman my mom’s age bangs Hurley so that she officially can consider herself a cougar. Crossover FAIL.

*Twilight’s Taylor Lautner is having a hard time keeping his shirt on for photoshoots these days and women everywhere can be heard murmuring to themselves while flipping through the new issue of GQ: “He’s only 17. He’s only 17. He’s only 17…”

*Breaking News: John Stamos Admits Being Drunk on TV… in 2007. I am reeeeeeally glad that he finally cleared that up because the last two years have been torture for me, wondering whether or not Uncle Jesse had a few cocktails before he appeared on that Australian morning show. Finally, we can all rest easy knowing the truth. So yeah, you’re welcome.

*My hero, the hilarious Tina Fey, was on Letterman this week where she talked about losing her virginity at 24 due to her “homeliness” when she was younger and this got me thinking… What did Tina Fey look like in high school? Was her senior picture as bad as mine? Worse? Is there hope for nerdy girls everywhere? Thanks to the power of Google image search and the hard work of the investigative internet journalists who came before me, I have your answer after the jump…

Sex surveys: can that be right?

Posted by Shawn Alff on Aug. 31, 2009, at 3:55 pm

Online surveys are all the rage. CL is even busy running our own for Best of the Bay. Particularly with sex surveys, you can’t help but wonder how accurate the findings are. For the most part, the sample group is composed of the same people who sign up for enter-to-win-contests on pop-up ads or who repost annoying Facebook surveys that describe what A-Team member or Golden Girl you would be.  Still, sex surveys are interesting because they reassure us that we’re not alone in our deviant addictions.

After reviewing several online sex surveys, I’ve included the results of two below. The first is shocking because of how tame it is. The other will make your sex life seem about as adventurous as that of an Amish widow. Read the rest of this entry »

Brewery tour in pictures: Atlanta Brewing Company

Posted by Bethany Sherwin on Aug. 12, 2009, at 9:56 am

With 15 years in the beer making game and distribution in several Southern states, Atlanta Brewing Company is the oldest operating brewery in Georgia. It all began with the malty brown Red Brick Ale – which won a gold medal at the 1998 World Beer Cup. In addition to Red Brick, the flagship brews include Peach Tree Pale Ale and a Blonde that took first place in the golden/ blonde ale category at the 2007 Great American Beer Fest. The 7.7% ABV Double Chocolate Oatmeal Porter, my favorite from the brewery’s lineup, started as a seasonal offering whose popularity eventually warranted year-round production. Do It Today: Lost season finale — whose side are you on?

Posted by David Warner on May. 13, 2009, at 7:59 am

Lost Season Finale. The penultimate season of J.J. Abrams’ time-travelogue series has proven to be nothing if not debatable. Entertainment Weekly’s Jeff Jensen thinks it’s been “a pretty freakin’ fun and altogether fulfilling year.” But the Tampa Tribune’s Walt Belcher dismisses the season as “tiresome,” and the New York Times‘ Ginia Bellafante says the show has become “mind-bendingly nonsensical” and “dispiriting.” (Whether you agree with her or not, her assessment is pretty funny — I especially like the reference to “a bungalow compound where the survivors are forced to wear orange jumpsuits and deal with people trying to look like Allen Ginsberg.”) Then there’s the intrepid band of superfans and skeptics who meet each week to discuss the series on Creative Loafing’s Lost podcast; you’ll have to wait till tomorrow to find out what we thought of the finale, but you can catch up on our previous bouts of brilliant theorizing and tangent-following here. Tonight’s shamelessly drawn-out three-hour farewell begins with yet another recap show at 8, followed by the two-hour season-concluding episode at 9.  ABC (WFTS-TV), Wed. May 13, 8-11 p.m

The biggest jerk in Bachelor history?

Posted by David Warner on Mar. 3, 2009, at 9:11 am

Something odd happened in Reality TV-Land last night: reality. Or at least it sure looked like reality, or what passes for it on ABC’s weepfest The Bachelor. Hunky Jason Mesnick (pictured) permanently forsook his nice-guy status by reneging on Melissa, his first choice to be Mrs. Mesnick, in favor of Molly, his #2 — and doing it all after he’d just been seen proposing to Melissa on national TV. Was he put up to it? Did he know all along that he was going to dump #1? The unaccountably obsessed rumor-monger Reality Steve swears it was all a plot (ABC knew Mesnick wanted Molly more, but convinced him to string Melissa along and then announce his real preference), but Melissa’s anger and Molly’s shock looked real.

Whatever happened behind the scenes, the online comments in response to host Chris Harrison’s blog on EW.com make for glorious reading. Jason and ABC get all kinds of opprobrium heaped on them, Melissa is accorded martyr status, and fans make classically WTF statements like this one:

“…we don’t want to see a lovely woman humiliated on television”

We don’t? Isn’t that the whole reason people watch this show?
