How to tell if your potential date is a loser: vol. 1

Posted by Shawn Alff on Sep. 10, 2009, at 10:18 am

enoughsaidI consider myself an authority on spotting losers because, well, I used to be one. I only exempt myself now because I’m married. Not to say that all married men make quality boyfriends; I just feel that if you’re able to convince a woman to marry you after five years of dating, either you’re not a loser or you’re extraordinary at hiding it.

Obviously there are as many ways to tell if a potential man-date is a loser as there are breeds of crotch ponies. To complicate things, everyone has their own definition of what constitutes a loser. For instance, you may be perfectly fine dating a man I consider a loser because you’re desperate or you’re willing to overlook his lacking qualities in lieu of, say, his bank account. With that said, below is a list of signs the guy you just met is a loser

-When asked what he does, he says, “I’m in a band,” or “I’m an artist.” Read the rest of this entry »

Daniel Edwards’ latest sculpture: Angelina Jolie naked and breastfeeding (pics and video)

Posted by Shawn Alff on Aug. 12, 2009, at 12:31 pm

It’s human nature to wonder what other people look like naked, especially celebrities. Artist Daniel Edwards takes this impulse to the next level, sculpting lifesize statues of nude celebrities in provocative poses. His latest piece features Angelina Jolie naked while breastfeeding twins in the recommended “football hold.” Read the rest of this entry »

Interview: Televisionary artist Taylor Oliver in Clearwater

Posted by Kreative Key on Jun. 22, 2009, at 3:11 pm

Taylor Oliver's "one face of shaman"

Taylor Oliver's "one face of shaman": A photo of an image on an analog TV screen.

The recent transition to digital television marks the end of Dad making you grab the TV antenna and stand on a coffee table in the far corner of the room because the picture got fuzzy 30 seconds before the end of the big game. No more wrapping rabbit ears in foil trying to get a better reception. Many would say this is a good thing: clearer, sharper images, so clean you can see the pores on Angelina Jolie’s nose. But analog’s not dead yet. Tampa Bay artist Taylor Oliver keeps analog images alive — with photographs. Read the rest of this entry »

From Twilight to True Blood: What is it about Vampires that makes ladies’ hearts pound?

Posted by Rabid Nick Refer on May. 26, 2009, at 11:34 am

What is it about immortal blood sucking broodaholics that makes women swoon?  Is it the danger?  Is it the biting?  Because trust me girls, I can nibble your neck and I’ve been known to walk fast with a pair of scissors in my hand.  Or perhaps it’s something unattainable to us, the meek mortal man.

Vampire stories such as Twilight and True Blood are currently the hottest things on the market from books, to film/TV and even sex toys.  What gives?  The thought of having my blood removed from the warmth of my veins does not get me wild in the pants.  But the ladies, the ladies do love their undead bad boys.  They want to be taken to the edge and peer over the side.  It drives their juices and makes their heart feel a new sense of life.  The thought that you could be laying with your lover and in the throes of passion and he could take your life must be a mighty intoxicant.  But give me a shot of tequila over a chalice of blood any day.

Edward Cullen does have quite a few more desirable qualities than say Count Dracula.  For one he doesn’t consistently look like he’s heading to the opera.  He’s a moody, anti-social, and more Abercrombie than Hot Topic.  And you’d being lying if you couldn’t admit those eyes are DREAMY. Tampa actor Ami Sallee Corley asks: Why do we stay?

Posted by amisalleecorley on Jan. 25, 2009, at 2:24 pm

[Editor's Note: Ami Sallee Corley is an actor, a teacher and now a blogger for CL. (That's Ami in the photo with Drew DeCaro, Bechir Sylvain and Petrus
Antonius, fellow members of the cast of Gorilla Theatre's recent Six Degrees of Separation.) I'm pleased to have her join the conversation, which she begins with a particularly cogent question for area artists.]

In a city where an artist’s choice is to   survive on crumbs or leave, why would anyone want to stay and starve as an artist in Tampa?

I believe there are some pretty fantastic reasons out there.

If we are to build a thriving, sustainable arts and culture scene here in Tampa, we should at first focus on what makes it tempting to stay.  Here goes. Read the rest of this entry »
