A blood-powered lamp, plus more strange and creepy green inventions

Posted by Katie M. on Oct. 27, 2009, at 2:17 pm

creepy_lampI know that people who make environmentally-friendly inventions have the best intentions at heart, but sometimes they take it a bit too far and come up with things that are, well, weird. Just in time for the creepiest holiday of the year, TreeHugger has compiled a slideshow list of some of the most unusual (to put it politely) green inventions out there.

And what, you ask, is on this strange list? Take, for instance, a luminol-filled lamp that runs on – you guessed it – blood. It’s the same stuff that forensic analysts use to find traces of blood at a crime scene and now you can light up your home with that same eerie blue glow.

Sex Bites: your week in sex and love news

Posted by W.J. L'amour on Aug. 16, 2009, at 2:17 pm

I’m a firm believer that Sundays should be no more academic than the New York Times Magazine. Enjoy your day of rest with this steamy pile of sex news.

Watch yourself, Grandpa: A new study to be published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism found that sex hormone levels affect the risk of broken bones in older men. The study measured the sex hormone levels of 1,436 men aged 65 and older for a period of five years. Researchers found that men with low levels of estradiol*, or high levels of sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG)^, were more likely to suffer ostoporotic fractures. Men with low levels of testosterone and estradiol combined with high levels of SHBG were three times as likely to break a bone than men with average sex hormones. Read the rest of this entry »

Gay magic? Is the new Harry Potter film littered with homosexual undertones?

Posted by Rabid Nick Refer on Jul. 19, 2009, at 10:09 am

The most popular film series since Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince is subject to controversy even where none exists. Some religious groups see the film as corrupting the morals of children by depicting magic, which is the enterprise of devil. Others believe the series contains a hidden gay agenda.  Are homophobes just desperate for a new children’s movie to attack,  or does the world’s most popular wizard enjoy both being naked with horses and wand waggling boys?

Video game review: Prototype – Oh, the inhumanity!

Posted by Rick Dakan on Jun. 29, 2009, at 10:16 am

It’s hard to feel guilty when people don’t even bother to move out of the way of your tank when it’s about to run them over. That’s good, because Prototype is a game that clearly doesn’t want you to be thinking too much about innocent bystanders, especially if doing so would get in the way of tearing the hell out of anything and everything around you. Still, even I felt a twinge of discomfort while going for the achievement points for running over 500 people with a single tank. In retrospect, this actually works within the convoluted framework of Prototype’s story, but at the time it was just one more way of causing mayhem. Prototype’s all about the mayhem.

You play as Alex, a scientist who always wears a hoodie for some unexplained reason, and who has been infected by a virus that’s quickly turning him into a monster/superhero. And of course you have amnesia. So you’ve got to find out who did this to you while Manhattan dissolves into a chaos of nasty soldiers and even nastier infected who’re constantly attacking each other and you. You get to tear your way through both sides in a blood filled, high speed romp up and down the length of the city as you unlock the secrets of your recent past and search for who’s responsible. If the story sounds typical and uninspired, that’s because it is – amnesia, virus, shadowy government agency, trust no one, and did I mention amnesia? Blah, blah, blah. We’ve seen it all before. Protoype’s setting and story don’t break any new ground and are almost throwaway.

But it’s not the why’s and therefore’s that draw you into Prototype – it’s what you do. Read the rest of this entry »

From Twilight to True Blood: What is it about Vampires that makes ladies’ hearts pound?

Posted by Rabid Nick Refer on May. 26, 2009, at 11:34 am

What is it about immortal blood sucking broodaholics that makes women swoon?  Is it the danger?  Is it the biting?  Because trust me girls, I can nibble your neck and I’ve been known to walk fast with a pair of scissors in my hand.  Or perhaps it’s something unattainable to us, the meek mortal man.

Vampire stories such as Twilight and True Blood are currently the hottest things on the market from books, to film/TV and even sex toys.  What gives?  The thought of having my blood removed from the warmth of my veins does not get me wild in the pants.  But the ladies, the ladies do love their undead bad boys.  They want to be taken to the edge and peer over the side.  It drives their juices and makes their heart feel a new sense of life.  The thought that you could be laying with your lover and in the throes of passion and he could take your life must be a mighty intoxicant.  But give me a shot of tequila over a chalice of blood any day.

Edward Cullen does have quite a few more desirable qualities than say Count Dracula.  For one he doesn’t consistently look like he’s heading to the opera.  He’s a moody, anti-social, and more Abercrombie than Hot Topic.  And you’d being lying if you couldn’t admit those eyes are DREAMY. Madworld for the Wii: Style, gore, and gratuitous fun

Posted by Rick Dakan on Mar. 23, 2009, at 10:08 am

New release Madworld for the Nintendo Wii: It’s Sin City meets The Running Man meets Escape From New York. What more do you need to know? Well, you should probably know it’s actually just kind of mediocre and occasionally dull, more like The Spirit meets The 6th Day meets Escape From L.A.

Anyway, Madworld is a blood-soaked, profanity-laden, super stylish action game for everybody’s favorite family-friendly game console.

Before I got my hands on it, I hadn’t turned on my Wii in months — not since Wii Fit came out, and that exercise program only lasted a week or so. As many have lamented, no one’s really making much in the way of hard core or cool games for the Wii these days – it’s mostly just shovel ware for kids with the occasional gem from Nintendo. The cool games that do come out on Wii, like Rock Band, have better versions on the more powerful consoles, so why buy them? But developers are starting to expand their horizons, and Sega brings us this bloody romp that’ll have you flipping your wrists to cut dudes in half with a chain saw, ram sign posts through their skulls and slam them into spikes over and over again.

Madworld has mad style. It’s all black and white, comic-book-style art — very reminiscent of Sin City. This style serves double duty – adding real visual flair and interest to the game while at the same time hiding the Wii’s lesser graphical prowess. The only color is red (well, a little yellow too), and almost all of that red is blood. And there’s lots and lots of blood. Read the rest of this entry »

Bloody wall dream and response

Posted by Dream Momma on Mar. 20, 2009, at 12:11 pm

Hi Dream Momma, I dream I’m trying to climb over a wall; it’s a wall like an Italian villa would have around it. There are bright pink flowers creeping up one side and I can smell the sea.  It’s hard going but eventually I reach the top only to find there is broken glass embedded in the cement and I will surely cut myself if I continue.  The smell of the sea is stronger and there is music, seductive music, playing softly from behind the wall.  It’s crazy but I continue to climb and put my leg over the wall only to see blood pouring out of a cut in my inner thigh.  I don’t feel anything so I keep climbing.  Now I am straddling the wall, blood is pouring out of me but I feel nothing.  I see the man I love in a garden, sitting in a elaborate chair, holding a glass or dark red wine. When he salutes me with the glass of wine I suddenly am in excruiating pain and start to fall off the wall which is now covered in blood. Before I hit the ground I wake up.

Can you help me?

Wow girl, you really know how to pick them!  Let’s start with the climb over the wall; do you always work that hard to maintain a relationship?  You must be exhausted!  Imagining your emotional life “blood” pouring out of you was an intense experience for me. I can’t begin to imagine what it was like for you.  I’m concerned.

So let’s see what we have so far.  A woman working really hard, emotionally bleeding for a man while he sits behind a wall, sipping wine, and saluting her efforts. I couldn’t help thinking about S and M relationships.   Have you considered that?  If that’s so, is it working for you? The dream says “no”…
