A safe and eco-friendly alternative to plastic tableware: TerraWare™

Posted by Katie M. on Nov. 23, 2009, at 4:56 pm

terraware_grouprA few weeks ago, I posted a few articles on the effects of BPA found in plastics and canned foods on humans and early child development. I recently came upon this safe and earth friendly, plastic alternative tableware to using plastic plates and utensils.

TerraWare™ is a line of plastic alternative tableware that is made partially from GMO free corn starch resin, which is not made from genetically modified ingredients and is also a sustainable resource.

The Green Community week in review: Pre-urban renewal Ybor, energy systems 2.0, green your holidays, and more

Posted by Katie M. on Nov. 8, 2009, at 11:18 am

What’s the buzz on the latest issues in the Green Community? Check out what you may have missed this last week:

City of Seminole recycling and sustainability discussion - A local activist held a discussion on recycling and sustainability at the Seminole Community Library on Monday, November 9.

1890s Ybor City: Green and sustainable (plus vintage postcards) – Grant Rimbey explores the green and sustainable nature of pre-urban renewal Ybor City.

BPA in plastics linked to aggressive behavior in children – Did you know that exposure to the BPA in the “bad” plastics has been linked to aggressiveness in children, as well as other diseases in humans?

Energy systems 2.0 – We are currently in an energy crisis, yet continuing to rely on old, out-of-date systems of provision that are no longer viable, economically or ecologically.

BPA found in canned foods and juices

Posted by Katie M. on Nov. 4, 2009, at 10:09 am

canned_foodEarlier this week, I wrote a post about BPA (Bisphenol-A) being found in plastic bottles and food containers and its harmful effects on humans, it also being linked to causing aggressive behavior in children. Use of this chemical has been banned in Canada and in some parts of the US.

Now you don’t have to look much further to get your daily dose of BPA – just open a can of soup or tuna! Tests recently performed by Consumer Reports showed traces of BPA in almost all of the 19 name-brand cans of soup, tuna, vegetables, and juice. There were even some cans labeled “BPA-free” that contained the chemical. And don’t think your organic canned foods are safe either – the chemical showed up in some of those as well.

BPA in plastics linked to aggressive behavior in children

Posted by Katie M. on Nov. 2, 2009, at 5:51 pm

plastic_bottlesWe’ve all heard about the “bad” plastics- those that contain carcinogens, toxins, and BPA (Bisphenol-A). But did you know that exposure to the BPA in the “bad” plastics has been linked to aggressiveness in children, as well as other diseases in humans?

A first-of-its-kind study done by the University of North Carolina linked behavioral problems in children from women that were exposed to BPA during pregnancy.
