How I barely survived being on local television

Posted by Catherine Robinson on Oct. 5, 2009, at 1:27 pm

Picture 9Catherine Durkin Robinson is a handful creating quite a scene over at Out in Left Field.

Last week I got a request to appear on Studio 10, a local morning talk show in Tampa, hosted by Holley Sinn and Jerome Ritchey. They wanted to discuss my review of Capitalism: A Love Story and maybe even my blogging adventures here at CL and Out in Left Field.

Despite the fact they have no open bar, I agreed to go on the show.

Thursday morning, I arrived early and asked for the makeup room.

Lovely Receptionist blinked a few times.

“Where do you think you are?” she asked. “Oprah?”

Slow Money, financial permaculture and capitalism

Posted by sharonjoykleitsch on Oct. 1, 2009, at 8:30 am

slowmoneyIt’s time to move from wondering what’s Slow Food to questioning Slow Money. Like enjoying locally-grown food, slow money is about making your investments local, “bringing money back down to earth,” says Woody Tasch. For deeper digging, there’s his book, Inquiries into the Nature of Slow Money: Investing as if Food, Farms and Fertility Mattered. No time? Check out why the Wall Street Journal considers slow money a local hedge fund.

In early September, over 450 people from 34 states and six countries showed up in Santa Fe for the Slow Money Inaugural National Gathering. If you missed it, they are slowly putting workshops videos up on their web site.

Movie Review: Michael Moore’s Capitalism: A Love Story

Posted by Catherine Robinson on Sep. 29, 2009, at 1:42 pm

No one can explain capitalism in a simple manner, and Michael Moore is no exception. Yet Capitalism: A Love Story does a fine job tackling the different sides of a complicated issue and sets forth the premise that the struggle we now face, no matter what the pundits tell you, isn’t between capitalism and socialism.
It’s between capitalism and democracy.
Do we want a society based on profit for some, or freedom for all? That’s the choice and question at the heart of this important documentary.

Millionaire filmmaker Michael Moore: “Capitalism is evil”

Posted by Tom Bortnyk on Sep. 7, 2009, at 9:52 am

Picture 8It is laughable that Michael Moore would have the audacity to launch an attack on capitalism in the form of a wide-release studio film, particularly when he is also serving as the film’s producer.

Despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary, the premise of Moore’s latest “documentary,” Capitalism: A Love Story, is that “You have to eliminate [Capitalism] and replace it with something that is good for all people and that something is democracy.” According to the film, which I’m sure will be fair and balanced, capitalism only benefits the wealthy and “condemns millions to poverty.” This would be laughable, too, if it weren’t so dangerous. (Watch a trailer for the film after the break.)

Fall Arts Preview: The Movies of September & October

Posted by Anthony Nicholas on Aug. 26, 2009, at 3:36 pm

With the loud, dumb and often-disappointing summer movie season behind us, I go into fall with some optimism. There’s a good amount of work by reliable writers and filmmakers, which gives the season a lot of potential. And it’s our first bombardment of Oscar Bait, with many of the titles here angling for awards come the end of the year.

Sneek peek: Michael Moore’s Capitalism: A Love Story (with video)

Posted by Joe Bardi on Aug. 21, 2009, at 11:20 am

Muckracking documentarian Michael Moore is back in Roger & Me territory with this fall’s Capitalism: A Love Story, the trailer for which was released today. Marvel as Mike takes on AIG and Congress to the tune of M.I.A.’s “Paper Planes.” Capitalism hits the multiplex on Oct. 2.

Trailer after the jump …
