Welcome to On the Radar, where we preview up-and-coming arts events to mark your calendar for. Next weekend, you can shuffleboard boogie it down at the St. Pete Shuffle or get crazy with a few rounds of Bingo at your community theater in Tampa. The average age of Florida citizens might be rising higher than the heat index, but the youth of Tampa Bay are reclaiming these traditionally geriatric activities for their own. Next weekend, theater-goers young and old alike can enjoy a game of Bingo while they see the story of Babe and Sis unfold onstage in The Queen of Bingo.

With his struggle to find producers to back his new play, “The Penis Diatribes,” Michael Matteo asks the question, “is the vaginal more politically correct than the penis?”

There’s no denying our cultures fascination with penises. They are everywhere. One hundred story high monuments to manhood dominate our city skylines. Our government is in a perpetual big dick contest, threatening enemies with our superior phallic weaponry. But, just because these images of manhood overrun our everyday life doesn’t mean audiences are ready to embrace them on stage.

Consider this. Even though we now have a black president, most will agree that a certain degree of racism is still inherent in American society. Because of this inequality, it is perfectly acceptable for a black comedian like Read the rest of this entry »
