Near the beloved Taco Bus in Tampa is another Mexican restaurant worth your attention for two reasons: a larger menu and alcohol. Walking in, you will notice brick walls, scattered red and green decorations, the sound of salsa music or Spanish-language television and a full bar. A juke box and pool tables can be found in a back room.

The menu boasts “The Best Mexican Food” and includes breakfast, lunch and dinner items. There are the ubiquitous piled-high nachos, quesadillas and fajitas and some rarely seen items like sopes, caldo de chivo (goat soup) and menudo (only available on the weekend). Read the rest of this entry »

Cheap Eats: Avocado Café n’ Bakery in New Tampa

As if Acropolis and Mr. Dunderbak’s weren’t big enough draws to this little North Tampa strip center, there’s also tasty Venezuelan fare at Avocado Café n’ Bakery. If you have ever tasted an arepa con queso at a local art festival and thought it was the best thing ever, you’ll love this place. There are seven arepa variations offered — all at $5.49 each or less — though you may need two of them. One of the best is the Pabellon arepa: mildly seasoned shredded beef, black beans and cheese on the white corn cake.
