Do It This Weekend: Fall art openings, get S’Real at the Dali, Questa, movies and more

Posted by Franki Weddington on Aug. 28, 2009, at 12:00 am

The air is getting crisp, the leaves as starting to fall, and everywhere you go, the smell of autumn is in the air…oh, no? Wait, we live in Florida, so our sad excuse for a pre-winter season won’t be here for a few months, but that’s not stopping the [5]art folks from debuting a fantastic new fall collection of exhibits, including Fresno G25, which features original works – paintings ranging from abstract to graphic, organic sculpture, wall art and more — by a dozen resident artists of Gallery 25 in California. Next up is a, um, revealing exhibit by Keith Thomas called Haven’t I Seen You Online? It includes large-scale paintings and drawings that explore his “life as a gay boy in the sprawling suburbs of Tampa,” and was inspired by the wide world of internet sex and dating sites. The final exhibit is a one-night-only affair in honor of the opening reception, and includes works by April Childers, whose small-scale sculptures have graced previous [5]art exhibits; photo art by Rion Sabean, and more. DJ Oblivion puts dancers in a trance at the reception, catered by Cigar City Brewing – providing a welcome break from the humdrum of house wines with a selection of microbrews, including Jai Alai IPA and Maduro Oatmeal Brown Ale. Welcome to On the Radar, where we preview up-and-coming arts events to mark your calendar for. Today’s edition includes a slew of cool new exhibits at [5]art, where they don’t let the sticky summer heat stop them from putting on a kickass autumn art debut this Friday.

Do It Today: Think+Drink Cinema, Ghosts of Ybor and Oddlie at Studio@620

Posted by Franki Weddington on Jul. 23, 2009, at 12:00 am

The Think + Drink Cinema Series focuses on cultural, social and scientific topics, and the American Music Series prior to each movie explores the history and icons of the music that have shaped America, featuring a live performance by a new local musician each week. The July 23 film is The Power of Song, archival footage of the pioneering folk singer and political activist Pete Seeger, featuring interviews with Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen and more. James Gromko performs live before the film. Music begins at 6 p.m. and films begin at 7 p.m. every Thursday through Aug. 27 unless otherwise noted. Visit southfloridamuseum.org for more info. (Pictured: Pete Seeger, courtesy Robert Krones/PBS) Bishop Planetarium, 201 10th St. W., Bradenton, $8, $6 students, $5 museum members.

These days, Ybor City residents expect their criminal gangs to be made up of drunken teenagers, but in the early days of the 20th century the Cigar Cit was faced with a more organized type of crime. Local documentary filmmakers and Tampa Film Review founders Pete and Paul Guzzo produced Ghosts of Ybor, a film that attempts to shed light on some of the should-be-famous names from Tampa’s glorious criminal past. The doc is presented as part of a special event at the Education Channel, which includes a Q&A with the Guzzos, and a meet-and-greet with Cigar City Mafia author Scott Deitche and everyone’s favorite Tampa historian, Gary Mormino. Thurs., July 23, 6:30 p.m. reception with food, 7:15 screening with Q&A and dessert and coffee to follow, The Education Channel, 703 N. Willow Ave., Tampa, $10, educationchannel.org. –Joe Bardi

The antithesis of the modern fairy tale, Oddlie is the story of a nearly-mute girl who lives on a garbage heap and rarely speaks but loves to sing. Aleshea Harris, who starred in local productions of For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuff and Gem of the Ocean, brings Oddlie to life through song, spoken word and theater. This one woman-play about magic and the power of poetry continues the Studio@620’s trend of pushing the boundaries of popular entertainment in Tampa Bay, offering a fresh perspective among a plethora of traditional offerings.  July 23-25, Thurs.-Sat., 7:30 p.m., The Studio@620, 620 1st Ave. S., St. Petersburg, $20, $15 students and seniors, 727-895-6620, studio620.org.—Franki Weddington

Beer Review: Cigar City Bourbon Barrel Bolita Double Nut Brown Ale

Posted by Bethany Sherwin on Jun. 17, 2009, at 3:58 pm

Cigar City Brewing is relentless; they refuse to stop making ridiculously great beer. RateBeer recognizes their Hunaphus Imperial Stout as one of the world’s ten best Imperial Stouts, and Big Sound Scotch Ale ranks among the top ten of its style. Then there’s Bolita Double Nut Brown Ale, which ranks #1 in the brown ale category on RateBeer – it’s the best brown ale currently produced on the planet as judged by a massive group of very critical beer nerds. Yep, in our own backyard, folks. This is truly beer history in the making.

The side of Bolita bottles reads:

Bolita was a type of lottery popular with the working class citizens of the Ybor City district of Tampa. Bolita means, ‘little ball’ but profits from the illegal (and often rigged) game were anything but little. In the 1920’s Tampa native Charlie Wall was the undisputed kingpin of the Bolita racket.

Our Bolita is a Double Northern English-style brown ale that has a complex malt forward character with notes of chocolate, toffee and hints of roasted nuts in the finish. Bolita pairs well with Baklava, Big Band music, cool evenings and robust cigars.

Sounds great. Now check out this variation — Bourbon Barrel Bolita. It begins with Cigar City’s Bolita Double Nut Brown. After three weeks of fermentation, the brew is transferred to Maker’s Mark barrels. Three months later, it hits the bottling line, where each bottle is filled by hand and then individually numbered. Since this batch of Bourbon Bolita only yielded 221 bottles, it is a pricey beer, but it’s completely worth it. Read the rest of this entry »

Beer review: Big Sound Scotch Ale from Cigar City Brewing

Posted by Bethany Sherwin on May. 24, 2009, at 9:24 am

Big Sound Scotch Ale, the latest seasonal release from Cigar City Brewing, can be purchased in 25 ounce bottles at Whole Foods, Leukens, Kingdom Liquors, World of Beer Clearwater, and several Total Wine locations. But get it soon; bottles are going fast, and once they’re gone, there’ll be no more until next year.

Luckily enough, I was able to persuade Wayne Wambles, the head brewer and man with the beer plan, to score a bottle that we could split. So we sat down at the Oldsmar Tap House and proceeded to geek the hell out on a really great beer. Read the rest of this entry »
