Bare minimum Halloween costumes for ballsy men (pics NSFW)

Posted by Shawn Alff on Oct. 27, 2009, at 1:00 pm

pizza deliveryWith Halloween approaching faster than an ADD kid jacked up on Snickers, much ado has been made about the sexification of female Halloween costumes. While some women feel that Halloween is the one day they can wear provocative outfits in public without being called sluts, others feel this trend increasingly objectifies women. I don’t know who’s right,  but I do know I have no problem with the sexification of male costumes. Read the rest of this entry »

Movie Review: Couples Retreat, starring Vince Vaughn

Posted by Joe Bardi on Oct. 9, 2009, at 3:06 pm

[Editor's Note: This review is by CL Atlanta's Curt Holman, part of his Hollywood Product series. To see more reviews by Curt, go here.]

GENRE: Frat-pack vacation.

THE PITCH: Jason Bateman and Kristen Bell play spouses contemplating divorce who convince three couples to join them at a tropical resort that requires a mandatory “skill-building” session. Other pairs include Vince Vaughn and Watchmen’s Malin Akerman, Jon Favreau and Sex and the City’s Kristin Davis, and Faizon Love and Kali Hawk.

MONEY SHOTS: Bateman and Bell pitch their friends the trip idea with a Power Point presentation that enumerates their marital problems. A bucket of chum splashes Vaughn in shark-infested waters. A barely clad Adonis (Carlos Ponce) practically humps the characters — male and female — during a yoga lesson. Vaughn has a video game showdown with the resort’s supercilious major domo, “Sctanley” (Peter Serafinowicz).

Posted by Franki Weddington on Sep. 11, 2009, at 12:00 am

Art lovers, comic fans and those in-between: time to throw on your tights, tie on your cape and iron your underwear! St. Pete’s Harley_Ivy_Nick Yakimovich - Heroes and Heroines party see and doco-op gallery and boutique ARTpool is having a Heroes and Heroines art party for its monthly show opening. The all-ages opening is expected to garner 100-300 attendees (including you) and showcases comic-inspired 2D, 3D and video art from local talent — commissioned and otherwise. $10 gets you in the door with hors d’oeuvres, a complimentary drink and face-time with super-heroine owner Marina Williams and other local superguys and gals to celebrate the graphic novel as an art form. If you’re worried about your secret identity, visitors are encouraged to dress as their favorite comic character, though Clark Kent and other civilians are welcome. On the Radar: Meet the Browns Comedy and Gospel Extravaganza, Gasparilla International Film Fest benefit party

Posted by Franki Weddington on Sep. 10, 2009, at 12:00 am

Welcome to On the Radar, where we preview up-and-coming arts events to mark your calendar for. This weekend, check out a comedy show inspired by playwright Tyler Perry and a benefit party for the hardworking folks of the GDavid Mann - Meet the Browns see and doasparilla International Film Festival.

Tyler Perry must the most inspired man in Hollywood, cranking out show after movie after comedy special, non-stop. Something is working for him though – I feel like I see a new “Madea does (insert crazy situation here)” movie on Blockbuster’s shelves every week. Another of his never-ending onslaught of loud, sassy, overly-made up characters hits the stage for the Meet the Browns Comedy and Gospel Extravaganza this weekend.  David Mann (pictured) reprises his role as Mr. Brown, and his real-life wife, Tamela Mann, busts out said extravaganza of soul singing. Doug Williams opens. Sat., Sept. 12, 8 p.m., 400 First St. S., St. Petersburg, $37.40-$47.50, mahaffeytheater.com. – Franki Weddington

‘Behind the Bedroom Door’ or what I learned about sex from middle-aged women

Posted by Shawn Alff on Aug. 7, 2009, at 1:09 am

Why would I, a straight man, review a collection of essays about women’s sex lives, and more importantly, why would I choose to do so on my honeymoon? Either I’m a caring husband searching for insight into pleasing my new wife, or I’m a calculating bastard researching ways to maneuver through discreet affairs. Whatever the case, I started Behind the Bedroom Door, expecting a series of romantic comedy plot lines: a torrent of quirky yet troubled sexual encounters redeemed by a meaningful relationship still in its honeymoon phase. After all, who’d write an essay about their lukewarm sex life when their current partner was sure to read it (coincidentally my marital sex life is like the opening night of a Cirque Du Soleil performance). Movie review: Judd Apatow’s Funny People, starring Adam Sandler, Seth Rogen and a cast of thousands

Posted by Joe Bardi on Jul. 31, 2009, at 6:15 am

For more reviews of the summer’s biggest movies, check out the CL Movies & Television site.

What’s often missed about the sense of humor is that it’s a defense mechanism. Behind every biting joke, taunt or put-down is a kernel of fear or hurt. Maybe if we keep laughing, all that pain and uncertainty hiding just behind the smile will stay contained. Judd Apatow’s excellent Funny People is a hysterical, profane, entertaining, challenging, honest, touching, sentimental, overwrought jokeathon of a movie. It’s loaded with great performances and wants to make Big points about Big topics. Life and death literally hang in the balance. This is a movie that stares into the abyss and sees a dick joke staring back.

Movie review: Sacha Baron Cohen in Brüno

Posted by Joe Bardi on Jul. 8, 2009, at 4:45 pm

For more news and reviews of the summer’s biggest movies, check out the CL Movies & Television site.

I’ve never been smacked in the face with a dick, but I imagine the experience is a lot like watching Brüno. The first 15 minutes of the movie is a penis shock-and-awe campaign, with a pink bunny-costume dick, a dick on the end of a stick and a talking dick that shouts “Brüno!” out of its peehole. That’s in addition to the many items — dicks, dildos, champagne bottles, etc. — going in and out of assholes obscured only by a little black dot. If there is one word to describe Brüno, it’s Cocktastic.

(Listen to Joe and Joran break down the movie in this week’s Reel Projections podcast after the jump)

Fox’s Glee delivers in every way possible

Posted by Lily Reisman on May. 21, 2009, at 9:15 am

I always wished I was born with a spectacular voice. Instead, I ended up being the tone-deaf one in the family. I would give anything to belt show tunes in the right key, be the lead singer in a kick-ass punk-rock band, or even sing karaoke without sounding like Patty and Selma from the Simpsons. Like many people in America, I am also intrigued by young, talented singers — kids whose sweet voices cause the hair on my arms to raise. Naturally, I fell in love with Tuesday night’s premiere of Fox’s Glee.

Feel like makin’ love: the top 6 sex songs

Posted by Rabid Nick Refer on May. 4, 2009, at 10:38 pm

Ooh, yeah that sounds so good.

I just realized that last week when I wrote about Katy Perry curing Tampa of the Swine Flu, I failed to properly introduce myself. I’m your party host, “Rabid” Nick Refer (the more you read, the more you’ll understand the reason for the name). I’m one of the new Sex & Love Contributors and I look forward to sharing a laugh and maybe more with you. If you like my stuff, remember TnT because that’s when you’ll find my new posts, every Tuesday and Thursdays.  So mark your calendar, get it tattooed on your girl’s ass, or write a song about it and put it on repeat: TnT.

Since you’re reading this post, I know you like sex. And assuming you’re human, you like music. But do you like music with your sex? Those might be my two favorite subjects so the idea of merging them in an amalgam of hot, rockin’ sexiness is right up my alley.

Black Dynamite: Hilarious hit at Sundance

Posted by Nathan Andersen on Jan. 21, 2009, at 5:53 pm

Sunday’s premiere midnight screening of Black Dynamite had the audience laughing and cheering as its inscrutable tough guy hero saves the world from “the man.”  The film was among the first to be picked up by a distributor at Sundance, when Sony Pictures bought the film for an estimated $2 million after intense overnight negotiations that closed at 6 a.m. following the premiere.  From what I saw, expect the film to be a breakout hit – this is very likely not the last film we’ll see starring Michael Jai White as Black Dynamite.

I met the director (along with editor and incredible music director Adrian Younge) the night before – when nobody knew who he was – while moving in line to see another highly anticipated comedy (Mystery Team). Luckily I had my Flip Video Camcorder in my pocket, as he agreed to answer a few questions on camera. The following clip combines elements of the trailer with parts of that interview:

Created by Scott Sanders and Michael Jai White, Black Dynamite tells the tale of a righteous brother, who’s got kung fu skills and knows just how to please the ladies. Read the rest of this entry »
