Review: Ghosbusters: The Video Game – The sequel we’ve been waiting 20 years for

Posted by Rick Dakan on Jul. 2, 2009, at 2:57 pm

Remember 1989? Remember the disappointment? How exciting the mere prospect was, the idea that we’d get more of that magical, hilarious madness. Another two hours worth of memorable quotes – what would replace “When someone asks you if you’re a God, you say yes!” or “Listen; Do you smell something?”

But then we got Ghostbusters 2 in all it’s lifeless, tepid, walking Statue of Liberty forgettableness. Who would want another sequel after that mess? And how could we get it two decades after the fact? Of course you’ve guessed the answer – Ghostbusters: The Video Game, which really is the sequel I’ve been waiting for.

All the original busters are back, Murray, Aykroyd, Ramis, and Hudson playing digital, young versions of their now aged and expanded selves. Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis are even credited as writers of the game, and I can believe it. The story has the same sensibilities as the original movie, the same over the top mythology and paranormal gobbledygook, and I found it a lot more interesting and entertaining than the Ghostbusters 2 plot. Of course it’s spread out over 7 hours of game play, but that works fine. It’s the transition to digital actors and recorded voice overs that’s less satisfying.

Dan Aykroyd’s Crystal Head Vodka might make me actually drink vodka

Posted by Brian Ries on Nov. 11, 2008, at 11:34 am

When the promo video for Crystal Head Vodka was posted about a month or so ago, I sort of thought it might be a joke, or maybe a little early viral promo for Ghostbusters III. Dan Aykroyd hammed it up admirably, detailing a somewhat-based-in-fact legend of 13 crystal skulls (like the Mitchell-Hedges skull featured in the latest Indiana Jones flick) tied to all kinds of supernatural mumbo jumbo. That’s easy for him, since Aykroyd has long been a dabbler in supernatural beliefs. The extra details about the production of the spirit seemed a little too elaborate, though. Turns out, not so much.

Florida is on the short list of states getting early distribution of the vodka, which went on sale the week of Halloween, and Ackroyd swung through the area pimping the beverage a few weeks back.  You can find it at many bars and most bigger liquor stores for just under $50.

Crystal Head Vodka is quadruple-distilled, which means that it’ll have the same refreshing lack-of-taste that all the other premium vodkas enjoy. But it’s in a fucking skull, dude! Maybe they’re trying to market to the aging goth population?

That said, I suspect that most people — me included — will be eagerly slapping the bottle in the freezer and drinking straight from the trepanned hole in the top. It’s a gimmick, but a cool one.

Here’s the promo video:
