A tribute to my second mom

Posted by Chris Humpherys on Feb. 2, 2010, at 2:33 pm

Sox Yanks

Warning. This is not a post about sports. It is, but it’s not.

It’s not a breakdown of the upcoming Super Bowl XLIV, a spring training preview, a mid-season NBA review or a Tiger Woods wherefore-art-thou piece.

This is a post about love, life, family and passing. So please, if you’re not in the mood to shed a tear, turn away now. I won’t mind. But if you do feel like celebrating the life of someone very special, by all means read on.

I’ll wait while you get some tissue.

My best friend’s mother passed away last week. This is a woman who was my mother’s best friend for 40 years, a woman who helped raise me. This is a loving, caring soul who had a profound impact on my life.

When I was only a few years old, we lived in Freehold, New Jersey. Yes, the hometown of one Bruce Springsteen.

Bus crash FreeholdOne morning, out of the blue, a school bus crashed into the side of our house. Miraculously, nobody was injured, but from that accident came several lifelong friendships. A woman came over to my house that day and asked if there was anything she could do to help in our time of need. Natalie and my mother had been best friends ever since. Forty years of ups and downs, laughter and tears, good times and bad.

Years after the bus crash, mom and I were living in Manhattan, but the cost of living in the city was too much for a struggling, single journalist to afford. It was Natalie who once again came to our rescue, taking us in despite the fact that she herself was broke.

Sex bites: Mackenzie Phillips had an affair with her father

Posted by W.J. L'amour on Sep. 24, 2009, at 3:49 pm

This afternoon, Mackenzie Phillips revealed on Oprah what most of the world found out earlier this week–that Phillips had a 10 year affair with her father, John P6a00d8341c630a53ef0120a5913eba970b-500wihillips of the Mamas and the Papas.

In her new book, High on Arrival, Phillips chronicles her life of drug, sex, rehab, divorce, arrests, and a sexual relationship with her father. The  affair, which was a consensual relationship, began on the evening before her marriage to Freddie Sessler, when Phillips was just 19 years old. Read the rest of this entry »

WTF?! The hotties who (inexplicably) date Marilyn Manson

Posted by Miss Ginger Millay on Aug. 30, 2009, at 11:29 am

Love or hate Marilyn Manson, you have to respect his impeccable taste in women. Sure, fortune and fame can get you anything (or anyone), but I’m still baffled by the homely Manson’s ability to pick up some of the most stunning up n’ coming starlets of the day. Here are a few of his conquests:

Rose McGowan

Actress Rose McGowan is best known for her roles in movies, such as Jawbreaker and Grindhouse, and the television show, Charmed.

She and Manson dated for 3.5 years in the late ’90s and early ’00s, during which time McGowan made headlines appearing at an awards ceremony wearing only a loose net over the front of her body and a cascade of strings across her backside (and oh, what a backside!).

After a two-year engagement, McGowan ended the relationship and Manson moved on to… Read the rest of this entry »

Dreaming of a global crisis

Posted by Dream Momma on Jul. 27, 2009, at 10:54 am

“Dream Momma, Last weekend I had a dream (nightmare) that I was trying to outrun a sinkhole with the family in the car. We made it to a shopping mall and ran inside just in time to see the parking lot and everything that lay beyond it swallowed up. It freaked me out and the only thing Julie could say was “What did you eat last night?”

Dear Dreamer, I have to assume you are married with kids and that Julie is your wife. On that assumption I believe this dream is about your belief and your marriage. You and your family are in a car (the marital journey) trying to outrun a sinkhole (big problem-separation-divorce-global crisis). In a nano second you are saved but the world outside is swallowed up.

Hmmm, swallowed up. What comes to mind when you think of the world being swallowed up? Read the rest of this entry »

The fuck-buddy search continues

Posted by Ginger Ale on Jun. 19, 2009, at 8:00 am

I’m back on the hunt for my next fuck buddy applicant. The qualified applicant I came across wasn’t available to accept the position - he already had an employer and was just testing the market. It was a great interview that ended too soon. I was prepared to have multiple interviews and multiple organisms with him, but that’s the way it sometimes goes with fuck buddies.

My quest for a dependable, exciting fuck buddy has inspired and shocked my friends. I have one girlfriend who’s recently divorced and sees the wisdom in the fuck buddy application process. Meet them, take their application, give them a thorough interview and either offer them the job or kick them to the curb. It’s not that hard of a process, just one you have to be careful of.  Read the rest of this entry »

Help Wanted … with making the Best of the Bay Readers’ Poll for Sex and Love

Posted by Shawn Alff on Jun. 3, 2009, at 9:52 am

We’re getting cranked up for Best of the Bay — yes, already — and this year more than ever  we want your input early in the process. We just had a brainstorm meeting to choose award categories for the Readers’ Poll, which we’re expanding this year. We’re in the process of fine-tuning our choices, and we don’t want to miss out on any great ideas.

We’re going to have a bunch of Readers’ Poll categories in Sex & Love. Read the rest of this entry »

Mid-life dating: Back in the saddle again

Posted by William McKeen on Mar. 12, 2009, at 11:46 am

Here you are, suddenly single.  Your long-time girlfriend finally tires of your insatiable need to alphabetize. Your wife walks out after years of you cheating on her with the Tampa Bay Bucs. Maybe you got tired of slipping on the panties she leaves lying on the bedroom floor.

Whatever the cause, it’s daunting to be single after years of sedentary monogamy. When it’s time to date again, to jump back on that pony, you’ll soon discover that the rules of the game have changed.

Most books about re-enlisting in the dating corps seem to be addressed to women, but Judith Sills’ Getting Naked Again (Springboard, $24.99) has adaptable wisdom for us all.

She uses that central theme – nudity, both physical and psychological – as the entry point for her book.  Maybe you have small children, which makes dating again an emotional minefield about the suddenly insecure little ones. Maybe your kids are teen-agers and now you’re trying to do what you’re telling them not to do. When your kids reach a certain age and see you struggle in relationships, it’s an odd about-face when they start giving their parents dating advice. And there’s always the satisfaction that comes with knowing that your dating life kicks the ass of your kid’s dating life. Read the rest of this entry »

Divorced over Facebook

Posted by Shawn Alff on Feb. 17, 2009, at 1:18 pm

I miss the good old days when it was still offensive to break up with someone’s answering machine. At least then there was the chance they would pick up.

Millions of people use it every day to pass on harmless snippets of gossip to friends and family.

But the message Emma Brady’s husband posted on Facebook could not have been more devastating.

It read: ‘Neil Brady has ended his marriage to Emma Brady.’

Mrs Brady, a 35-year-old conference organiser, claims she had no idea he even wanted a divorce, and only found out when a friend, who read the post on the social networking website, rang to console her. Read the rest of this entry »
