Beware of artists…they’re out in droves for ARTGORE, armed with paintbrushes, pencils, paper and canvas, and there’s no telling whether they’re going to draw you or draw blood. More than a dozen artists from the ARTCORE collective have works on display — among them Cheeta, Chainsaw Chuck, Casey Ryan Hall, Ben Apple, Bean Spence (work pictured right) and more. Members of the Cheap Little Punks troupe act out the ultimate Halloween cult classic Rocky Horror Picture Show while the movie version plays onscreen. Dr. Frank-N-Furter, a bisexual, transsexual scientist from Transylvania, invites Brad Majors (an asshole) and Janet Weiss (a slut) into his creepy castle when their car breaks down. Chaos and myriad musical numbers ensue when Frank-N-Furter reveals his creation: Rocky, an Adonis who only wants to learn about how his life began. You can also check out the less well-known Repo! Good Charlotte haters — and I know you’re out there — read no further.

I lost my Vegas virginity this summer on a trip with two of my girlfriends.  I learned there is only one problem with staying at the Luxor in June: It’s located just off the strip, so to get to where all the action is, you can walk or take a $20 cab ride. We never opted to walk off the prior night’s margaritas.

I was taking in the sights as our cab made its way downtown. In what I now believe to be divine intervention, we hit a red light in front of the Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino. The hotel’s electronic ticker boasted current promotions and events — hotel bargains, dining deals, Saturday night’s birthday bash for some celebrity I’d never heard of. And then I read something that excited me more than I’d like to admit: “Joel Madden DJing TONIGHT at Club Privé.”

I broke our silence with a noise that can only be compared to someone gasping for their first breath of air after being brought back from the dead. Startled, my friend Kellie asked, “What is it?”

“Oh my GOD, you guys! Joel Madden is going to be at Privé tonight!” I shrieked like a 15-year-old teeny bopper at, well, a Good Charlotte concert. “We have GOT to go there!”

“Tampa misses so much cool shit,” my friend Brian Repetto of Insect Joy turns to me and whispers through a cigarette smoke exhale. New World Brewery, Thursday, August 6. One of those nights in Y-bore that turn out really fun because you conned a few friends to hang out and support local music.

“Oh well, I’m glad I made it out, man. This is a really great lineup tonight.” No joke. Insect Joy interestingly spliced record dj-ing and spinning with their usual weird electronic sounds whirling into the atmosphere. Flexxehawk blasted through their spidery, angular, intricate yet minimalist songs with true enthusiasm and purity reserved for bands willing to play their damnist whether the crowd consists of five people or 500.

Huge musical buildups and crescendos with very few but very meaningful words flesh out the Flexxehawk sound into something original, in the vein of Polvo’s kind of math rock mixed with textured vocal harmonies. Historically members and contributors of several local and national acts including Ima, Dumbwaiters, Meringue, etc. All this not even mentioning the touring headliner, ST37.

Out of this world, psychedelic, noisy, punk and weird, references to J.G. Ballard and Twin Peaks, all in one four-piece from Austin …
