On the Radar: Dog Sees God at The Frenzie

Posted by Franki Weddington on Nov. 16, 2009, at 12:00 am

dogseesgodWelcome to On the Radar, where we preview up-and-coming arts events to mark your calendar for. This weekend, The Frenzie Theatre company offers Dog Sees God: Confessions of a Teenage Blockhead, an angsty adolescent show that asks what might happen to the Peanuts gang if they ever reached teenagerhood.

When CB’s dog dies of rabies, it causes him to question the existence of an afterlife — but with a burnout for a best friend, a sister who’s gone goth, an ex in the loony bin, and a load of inebriated buddies — he has no one to turn to for enlightenment on his existential questions. When he meets an artsy new friend, the limits of teen turmoil reach maximum levels in this darkly optimistic exploration of drug use, suicide, eating disorders, teen violence, rebellion and sexual identity. Will science discover a love potion?

Posted by Shawn Alff on Nov. 6, 2009, at 2:02 pm

love potionIn this over-medicated age, drug companies continue expanding their empires into the farthest realms of human behavior, developing chemical cocktails for whatever ails us: if depressed take Prozac, if scatterbrained take Adderall, if sleepless take Ambien, if impotent take Viagra… Now researchers are searching for drugs that will help you stay in love.

Consider how people often attribute their inability to remain in a relationship to psychological reasons, saying such things as, “I’m not happy anymore,” or “the spark is gone.” In a sense, a lack of love is simply a chemical imbalance, which theoretically can be corrected. Someday soon drug companies may develop a prescription pill that helps you stay in love the same way Rogaine sustains hair. Read the rest of this entry »

Routes Music, Indio: A look at Phish Festival 8 from the costumes to the light show

Posted by Alex Pickett on Nov. 3, 2009, at 10:36 am

Routes Music is a documentary film acting as a roving music census, taking in the true musical passions (and disgusts) of the American people. We’re traveling all across the country, stopping along the way to interview local bands, take footage of live performances and chat with anyone and everyone. Learn more about the documentary here; check out all previous entries here.

“Where eeez yer pipe?”

A 6’4 security guard towered over me, glaring.

“Where eeez yer pipe?” he repeated in a thick Islands accent.

“What?” I replied, not sure he really just asked me what I think he just asked me.

“Where eeez yer pipe?” he asked again.

“My what?” I said again, still shocked.

“Yer pipe. Yer pipe.”

Now he was aggravated. I’m enjoying feigning ignorance.

“I don’t know what you’re saying, man.”

The guard switches tactics.

“Drugs?”

I smile.

“No, no drugs.”

“OK, go ahead.”

So began my very first experience at an extended-day music festival, and only my second time ever seeing the seminal jam band, Phish. Luckily, the rest of the three-day fest at the Empire Polo Grounds in Indio, Calif. went smoother than my entry.

Adult films as effective as drugs at boosting testosterone

Posted by Shawn Alff on Aug. 19, 2009, at 10:30 am

According to the September 2009 edition of Playboy, watching porn boosts your testosterone levels as effectively as hormone therapy drugs.

Men lose and average of 1percent of their testosterone levels every year starting at age 30, and 5 million American men suffer from low testosterone. Among the array of detrimental effects this has on your penis, low hormone levels can cause you to shrink and become depressed. Read the rest of this entry »

Dirty little swinger secrets (NSFW)

Posted by Rebecca Ammon on Jul. 28, 2009, at 10:26 am

The word swinger sounds dirty all by itself. For many, this lifestyle conjures stereotypes of swingers engaging in all types of uninhibited behaviors. Many of the assumptions non-swingers have about the lifestyle are true, to an extent, but it’s important to realize that every swinger is different, and we each decide what uninhibited behaviors we are comfortable with.

Swinging is often associated with over indulgence in alcohol or drugs; most people can’t understand how you could get naked and have sex in front of, and with, a room full of strangers, without being wasted on some substance. Personally I don’t partake in drug use or excessive drinking, but I’ve had swinging encounters with a few who do.  Read the rest of this entry »

EPA finds chemicals and pharmaceuticals in fish across the US

Posted by Kevin O'Dunn on May. 1, 2009, at 6:30 am

It turns out that not only is fish a great source of Omega 3 fatty acid, fish is easily fortified with pharmaceuticals that treat anything from high blood pressure or the risk of unwanted pregnancy to high cholesterol and bipolar disorder. How, you ask?

Waste waster treatment plants used to be called sewage treatment plants but no one wanted a sewage treatment plant on the banks of their river so we began calling them “Waste Water Facilities”. Waste water facilities do well at allowing the human waste collected for treatment to reach a neutral state of organic activity with out the spectrum of bacteria and viruses that are present in raw sewage. Treated sewage is used many ways, some of it is processed beyond the “treatment” stage by breeding worms in it and then capturing the discharge from the worms to use as organic fertilizer; what happens in Orlando, and other cities in Florida, is that this worm step is not taken — the treated sewage is released into the river. Dream Momma: My brother is an addict

Posted by Dream Momma on Apr. 27, 2009, at 9:57 am

Dream Momma, I dreamed I won the lottery and right afterwards met the perfect girl who was really into me. In the next part of the dream I am driving my asshole of a brother to rehab. (My last and best relationship ended because of him). I look into the rear view mirror of my new Corvette and see my parents waving good-bye from the front porch of a house I’ve never seen before. My Mom is crying and I seen her twisting a hanky in her hands. My Dads hands are clasped together like in prayer.  I’m totally confident and smile and wave out the car window, then suddenly I wake up.”

Wow, talk about a compensation dream!  I can just picture you, tossing and turning like most of us in this economic crisis, then finally falling into a fitful sleep.  Your days, when you’re not working your tail off,  are probably spent trying to keep the family together and holding Mom’s hand while cursing, pleading, cajoling and blaming your brother for everything… Read the rest of this entry »

State Rep. Darryl Rouson wants a ‘bong tax’

Posted by Alex Pickett on Dec. 18, 2008, at 4:53 pm

Last week, State Rep. Darryl Rouson filed his first bill for the 2009 session. His focus: drug paraphernalia.

HB 99 would charge a 5 percent tax on any items listed as drug paraphernalia in Florida statutes, regardless of whether the paraphernalia was sold for legal purposes or not. (Hmmm…that sounds a lot like the federal drug stamp tax.)

That last line is a key part — Rouson is also going after so-called “headshops.”
