The Green Community week in review: Green Halloween, organic food labels, sustainable living and more

Posted by Katie M. on Oct. 25, 2009, at 3:30 pm

What’s the buzz on the latest issues in the Green Community? Check out what you may have missed this last week:

Tampa joins International Day of Climate Action to take a stand for a safe climate future- On October 24, people from Tampa Bay joined Greenpeace to hear the importance of acting now for the climate and gather together to take a stand for the climate and a clean energy future as part of the largest global day of climate action ever.

Which big name food company is behind your organic food? – Did you know that some of your favorite organic food brands are owned by some of the biggest names in the food production business?

October 24 is the International Day of Climate Action (videos) – The biggest day of grassroots action on global warming ever.

Review of The Age Of Stupid: A docu-drama about climate change and our possible future

Posted by Eric Haase on Sep. 22, 2009, at 12:30 pm

age-of-stupid_cal[Tampa, FL-  Sept.21, 2009]  Tonight I attended the global premiere of the film The Age of Stupid. I was invited to this event by my friend Ingrid Esteves, a French national who doesn’t understand how the U.S. could back out of the Kyoto Treaty, or why we’d want to be as stupid as Napoleon and start wars on two fronts at the same time. Yes, there’s lots of ’stupid’ to discuss in our age, but let’s talk about this outstanding film first. This film is ambitious in several respects. Firstly, there’s the way it premiered.

The film opened globally tonight in synch with a star-studded live screening event in New York. Before the film began audiences were able to watch VIPs arrive at the Manhattan premiere by bike, rickshaw, electric car and sail boat via a satellite link that broadcast the event to 700 cinemas in 50+ countries. The celebrities then walked a green carpet (made from recycled soda bottles) to a solar powered cinema tent in downtown New York.

Weird green video film festival

Posted by Katie M. on Sep. 17, 2009, at 1:52 pm

eco_boyCurrent’s Green site is hosting a Weird Green Film Festival, showcasing the craziest, funniest, most interesting (to say the least) green-related short films. You can go on their site to vote for your favorites or get creative and submit your own.

You want to do good. You really do. You want to feel like you’re making a difference. Everywhere you turn you see evidence of climate change and the 6th mass extinction and you can’t handle it anymore. You want everyone to know about what is happening, and you are shocked that more people aren’t paying attention.

And then it hits you, if only people were laughing about climate change, then more people would get involved. It’s like when they teach you if you are attacked never yell “Rape” because people will run away, but if you yell, “Fire” then people will come towards you. So you decide that you want to make people laugh about climate change. So you make a video. Because you want people to laugh. Only problem is, in some of these cases, we aren’t laughing with you, and in some of these cases I’m not sure we’re laughing as much as smirking. But gosh darnit, you did it. And so today, we honor you. The makers of weird green videos.

Check out my favorite weird green films after the jump:
