Drop In and Decorate for the Holidays: Baking cookies for charity

Posted by Susan Filson on Nov. 23, 2009, at 8:45 am

DI&D_logo-sml

Each year around this time we’re inundated with requests for help or financial support from almost every nonprofit organization under the sun. While most, if not all, are very worthy causes, it can still be a bit daunting. This year, perhaps more than ever, the needs of our community are great while our resources are dwindling. With unemployment at over 10%, writing a few checks to our favorite charities is simply not an option for many of us right now. But there are still lots of small ways that we can make a difference, some of which can be very rewarding.

What we may not be able to give in dollars, we most likely can give in time. Volunteering at a local charity during the Holidays is a always a great way to support our community and make the lives of those less fortunate a little bit brighter. Hosting a Drop In & Decorate Party is a sweet way to pay it forward and have a swell time doing it.  Read the rest of this entry »

Get involved in America Recycles Day this Sunday (11/15)

Posted by Katie M. on Nov. 10, 2009, at 1:30 pm

america-recycles-dayThis Sunday marks the 12th anniversary of America Recycles Day, a nationally recognized day dedicated to recycling and purchasing recycled and repurposed items.

America Recycles Day is working in partnership with Keep America Beautiful and the National Recycling Coalition to support local communities and raises awareness by educating citizens about the benefits of recycling. The ARC website states: “The purpose of America Recycles Day is to continue to promote the social, environmental and economic benefits of recycling and encourage more people to join the movement toward creating a better natural environment.”

What can you do? First of all, if you don’t already recycle on a regular basis, this Sunday would be a great day to start doing so. Maybe you could make every Sunday your official recycling day (if you don’t receive the pick up service in your neighborhood).

Picnicking with porn stars: Paul Allen’s adults-only family business

Posted by Shawn Alff on Oct. 7, 2009, at 9:32 pm

A-best female performer Fan's Choice 2008 Bree OlsenPaul Allen leans over his immense desk discussing the family business.  He speaks in a raspy voice not unlike Brando’s in The Godfather, though given to bursts of impromptu songs like, “I kissed a girl and I liked it.” Fingers weighted with gold rings comb his dark, slicked back hair and trimmed goatee. A large man sits in the corner with his tattooed forearms crossed. In an adjacent office, Allen’s wife Tracy finishes Paul’s sentences, filling in names and dates. Allen’s son walks in, getting his father’s approval on a project while Allen’s daughter in-laws announces new callers. Even Allen’s eighty-two year old father works in the office, balancing the books. All the doors are open, promoting an open-air intercom system. With Tampa Bay Downs blocks away, and sports memorabilia layering the walls, one might assume Allen runs a bookie operation. In fact, Allen even played a mafia kingpin in Stormy Daniels’ adult film Whack Jobs. But Allen is no gangster. He’s a business man who heads a family run publishing company, the staple of which is NightMoves—a free, monthly magazine dedicated to Tampa’s active adult scene. Read the rest of this entry »

The Green Community week in review: Tampa green biz program, cypress mulch protest, harmful water bottles and more

Posted by Katie M. on Aug. 2, 2009, at 12:13 pm

What’s the buzz on the latest issues in the Green Community? Check out what you may have missed this last week:

The Earth Charter: How ethics can change the world (video) – The Earth charter was created by thousands of people representing hundreds of countries aiming at a universal ethical code of conduct for human beings. How do we treat each other? How do we treat the world? These questions were raised and answered.

City of Tampa Green Business Designation Program- As of this week, the City of Tampa became one of just a handful of cities nationwide to start a green business designation program.  Outside of the West Coast (California and Washington state), Tampa will join major metropolitan areas like Philadelphia and Knoxville in rewarding private businesses that have become or want to become more environmentally-friendly.

Why buying recycled, repurposed products is so important- Preserving the Earth’s natural resources is vital to the future of the planet and all of its inhabitants. Buying recycled and repurposed products is a great way to make a positive impact on the environment by cutting back on waste and the resources needed to make new items.

Pecha Kucha Night Vol. 3 this Saturday in Ybor (video)

Posted by Grant Rimbey CNU on Jul. 29, 2009, at 8:30 am

This Saturday, August 1 join e-tba (Emerging Tampa Bay Architects) for the third installment of Pecha Kucha.  For those not familiar with the event, designers, activists, artists, advocates and generally creative people are given 20 slides shown for 20 seconds a piece to present an idea, theme, cause, or project.

Pecha Kucha originated in Japan and takes place in over 200 cities worldwide. It was invented by Tokyo-based architects Mark Dytham and Astrid Kleins who turned PowerPoint, fixture of monotonous cubicle life, into both art form and competitive sport. Their innovation, dubbed Pecha Kucha (Japanese for “chatter”), applies a simple set of rules to presentations: exactly 20 slides displayed for 20 seconds each. That’s it. Say what you need to say in six minutes and 40 seconds of exquisitely matched words and images and then sit the hell down. The result, in the hands of masters of this art form, combines business meeting and poetry slam to transform corporate cliché into surprisingly compelling beat-the-clock performance art.

Kreative Key sits down with photographer and gallery owner Marina Williams to discuss TRA’shion Fashion, coming to ARTPool Gallery July 11th…

KK – So Marina, ARTPool gallery is gearing up for another TRA’shion Fashion Show.  If you’ve never been to TRA’shion Fashion, what is it and what’s it like?

Fri. June 12. Clothing optional foam party. Pool and hot tub. Potluck dinner. Bands and Djs. Foam on the dance floor. DJ Robert Vanwest VS DJ Zoe Vanwest and bands Unit Shifters and The Aristocracy. $10 Camping. 6pm-12am. The Riverboat Club. 6901 Caliente Blvd., Land O Lakes, FL 34637.

Sat. June 13. Celebrate Father’s Day the Kinky Way @ Fetish Circuit. What better way to celebrate Father’s Day this month by bringing the special Daddy in your life out to play! Starting out the day at the Tampa Munch and then meeting up at The Honeypot at 9:00pm to start playing the night away! We will once again have the bar open, the equipment set up,Vendors on hand for new toys to play with and the DJ will be playing our favorite music! We are welcoming back many of our fellow Orlando Kinksters again this month. Please keep an eye out for the Fetish Circuit door-person at entry. Our patrons are given special access to the club and do not have to wait in the line for the downstairs area. Come on out and “Get Plugged In”! $10 cover. Fetish attire requested, no casual dress allowed. 9pm. The Honey Pot (third floor)- 1507 E. 7th Ave., Ybor.

Sat. June 13. Fetish Factory’s Monthly Fetish Party
. Custom steel bondage equipment will be set up throughout the club for safe and consensual play. Featuring dancing, provocative play, creative bondage, spanking, flogging, and fetish games. DJs Danny Bled and Godfather. The 2nd Sat. of every month. Purgatory Nightclub. 1000 State Road 84 City, Fort Lauderdale, FL Zip. 33315.

Sun. June 14. The Penis Diatribes. After being censored by TBPAC, Ruth Eckerd Hall, and several other local theaters, “The Penis Diatribes: it’s harder than you think being a dick,” hits the stage. Michael Matteo conceived the work after reading the acclaimed “Vagina Monologues” and wondering why a similar play hadn’t been written from the male perspective. “The Penis Diatries” follows a man on New Year’s Eve as he reflects on his many failed relationships and realizes that all of his shortcomings are tied to his penis. Entering into a dialogue with his member, he discovers that it dominates his entire life. This comedy begs the question, “how much say does a penis have in a man’s decision-making process?” 7pm. $10-$12. Side Splitters Comedy Club- 12938 N Dale Mabry Hwy Tampa, FL.

The casualties of climate change: thousands die each year from weather-related disasters linked to global warming (Video)

Posted by Matt De Vlieger on Jun. 5, 2009, at 8:00 am

Have you ever heard the Vietnam-era quote, “war is not healthy for children and other living things?” It is a staunchly obvious and painstakingly reasonable appeal that cuts to the ethical core and casualties of war.  I read an article this week that reminded me of it, but instead of war, the murderous culprit in this story is climate change.

A new report by the Global Humanitarian Forum (GHF) says that global warming already kills about 300,000 people a year.  If that projection is not startling enough– or if you have more of an economic mind, and are not much swayed by stacks of human figures—the report also says that climate change costs around $125 billion in economic losses annually.

Sometimes a dream is just a dream

Posted by Dream Momma on May. 14, 2009, at 2:05 pm

A reader sent me a “garden variety” dream.  A dream that basically rehashed his day’s events.  He dreamed he was flying a plane and wanted to land it to go home and have a beer.  Luckily, before I got all analytical, I asked him what he did for a living.  He was a pilot.

So, there are many types of dreams.

The BIG dream is a dream you keep remembering, chewing over, and can’t get a handle on.

The repetitive dream is the dream that keeps coming back over and over again.  It can drive some people nuts, to the point they don’t want to go to bed.

The nightmare is well, a nightmare.  We’ve all had one or more.

Next time, I’ll write about dream themes.

Will someone please send me a dream?

Earth Day Orgy: Tampa Bay Earth Day events

Posted by Lisa Montelione on Apr. 15, 2009, at 6:30 am

It’s that time of year again: Earth week. Here in Tampa we aren’t limiting ourselves to just one day of honoring Mother Earth. I guess as bandwagons go, this one is a good one to jump on. But come May, we’ll be experiencing one hell of a hangover after a weeks worth of Earth fests and expos.

For those of you who aren’t in touch with your sustainable side, here’s the short list:

Saturday, April 18- Sweetwater EarthFest: Building a Just & Sustainable Tampa Bay; Sweetwater Organic Farm, Tampa; 9 a.m.-4 p.m.; free admission
