Museum Day 09-26– Free Admission

Posted by Michael Murillo on Sep. 26, 2009, at 6:30 am

tbhistcenterWe have a lot of museums in the area, but they’re not all cheap to visit. Admission costs vary, but even the less expensive admissions add up if you’re taking the family. Even if you want to go, sometimes the budget doesn’t allow taking everyone to an exhibit.

But you can’t use that excuse today. Read the rest of this entry »

Why Bing trumps Google when searching for nude celebs (NSFW)

Posted by Rick Dakan on Sep. 17, 2009, at 8:29 am

BingI admit to that I have a mild obsession with celebrity nudity. I also have a major aversion to paying for it. So part of my daily Web routine involves regular visit to some free celeb nude sites like Egotastic, Nudography, and Babes of Babylon. The pics are free, at least when they first go up, and I collect them like found coins, stuffing them into a folder on my computer in hopes they’ll some day pay future dividends (if you know what I mean). But what about the stuff I miss? What about the stuff I’ve lost? Just the other day I couldn’t find my pic of NCIS supporting actress and resident goth chic, Pauley Perrette. I knew she’d posed topless and the pic was on some site somewhere, but Google totally let me down. So I did something I’ve never, ever done before: I searched using Bing! Demand for free Avatar preview tickets shuts down website

Posted by Rabid Nick Refer on Aug. 18, 2009, at 12:39 pm

James Cameron’s Avatar doesn’t hit theaters until December, but that hasn’t stopped hyped-up fan boys and girls from getting excited now. With a wall of secrecy around the project, the desire to see something (anything!) from the flick is at such a fever pitch that a free ticket giveaway today for a special preview of the film throttled the Avatar website.

Free Domino’s pizza on July 4

Posted by Brian Ries on Jun. 30, 2009, at 12:28 pm

Bay area Domino’s pizza outlets will be throwing in a free 10-inch “American Legends” pizza with every purchase on Independence Day this weekend. If you’ve seen the commercials, you might know that these newish pies are geographically themed, resulting in unlikely pizza combinations like Buffalo Chicken or Philly Cheesesteak. That said, if you’re taking the easy way out and ordering in to conserve your playing with fire fun for M-80’s and Intergalactic Sky-Screamers, then by all means, take the freebie.

Free SkyWatch at the Museum of Science and Industry on May 2

Posted by Michael Murillo on May. 2, 2009, at 5:00 am

Isn’t it nice to look up at the sky on a clear night and admire the moon and constellations? Maybe, but the truth is you won’t get to see much detail even if you have perfect eyesight. Plus, most people don’t know all that much about astronomy, so aside from picking out the Big Dipper (which I can’t even find) do you even know what you’re looking at?
Wouldn’t it be great if there was a place with high-powered telescopes to guarantee vivid images, and maybe experienced people around to tell you what to look for and exactly where to find it in the sky? Oh, and all this should be free, of course. Read the rest of this entry »

Beach Goes Pops: April 24 & 25

Posted by Michael Murillo on Apr. 24, 2009, at 5:20 am

We have a lot of outdoor events in Tampa Bay. Some come and go, some fizzle out after a few good years and some never really get started. But Beach Goes Pops, held at Pass-A-Grille Beach (at 9th Avenue and Gulf Way) is enjoying its 19th year with two days of outdoor concerts, art and crafts. And it’s totally free to attend.
The location is great for an outdoor event and you’re encouraged to bring blankets and chairs so you can relax while enjoying the music (you should do this). It seems like a pretty diverse lineup, too, with Carribbean music, a saxophonist and even an orchestra. The also have artists booths for Art in the Park, where you can find an assortment of interesting pieces and meet the people who made them. Sounds like a nice way to spend an evening.
You know what else I like about Beach Goes Pops? Not only is it an evening event (running from 4 p.m. until 10:30 p.m. both nights) but it’s on Friday and Saturday. I’ve found that many events are Saturday and Sunday. Nothing wrong with that, but Friday night is a great night to go out and relax to some free music– especially after a long work week. So I’m glad they’re covering the two most popular evenings to go out.
Like I said, this event is free so unless you hate music, art or the beach (and if you hate those things, what in the world do you like?) then you should consider checking it out. For more information, visit www.beachgoespops.com.

Green freebies from Home Depot for Earth Day

Posted by Alexa White on Apr. 21, 2009, at 12:00 pm

Home Depot is handing out a few freebies to help you go green for Earth Day (April 22nd):

According to the Home Depot website, you can stop in at your local store and pick up some items to help you make your home more green. The two items that caught my eye were the free CFL bulb and the free aerator insert for faucets. The aerator insert will help save water and is often overlooked as an easy way to conserve resources. There’s a limited supply to both these items but you don’t have to buy anything to get them. The website also says the CFL bulbs have been available since April 19, but it doesn’t specify if you’ll have to wait until the 22nd for the aerator.  You might want to call ahead to your closest store for details on the offer and verify if they have any left before you head out. Starting a recycling program at work- free and easy

Posted by Michelle Schenck on Apr. 19, 2009, at 6:00 am

When I first came to my law office in the Westshore district of Tampa five years ago, there were no recycle bins anywhere to be found. Most people in the office did not really think much of it and never really inquired about it. I thought this was a bit odd since this was a ten story building housing many offices that use tons of copy paper on a regular basis.

Low and behold, after one phone call to Property Management, we found out that there is in fact recycling for the building and it was a free service when requested by an office! When they brought up the paper recycling bins just a day later,  I was ecstatic. Then I thought of all of the sodas and cups we use daily for clients and staff and wondered if they also had recycling bins for aluminum and plastics. They did, and it was also a free service for the building when requested.

So next time you are in your office and you are annoyed that you have to throw that piece of paper in the garbage because there is no recycling in your building, make sure you double check with management if there is recycling available- they may surprise you. If they say no, inquire to them about looking into a recycling program for your office. Within a few weeks, you may have just started a new, eco-friendly trend at work.

Free Game Downloads From Amazon.com

Posted by Rick Dakan on Feb. 5, 2009, at 1:14 pm

Amazon.com lurks on the Web, ever dreaming of conquest. Their latest gambit is to sell you inexpensive, casual games for your PC, and wouldn’t you know it, the first hit is free. I have to admit that Build-a-Lot, Jewel Quest II, and The Scruffs aren’t exactly the titles I’ve been waiting for with baited breath (that would be Street Fighter IV), but hey, free games.

Well, not for me, since I don’t have a computer that runs Windows, but for most of you out there, you can sample the casual gaming experience thrice over sans cash before you embark down the dark path of one-click downloads Read the rest of this entry »
