Routes Music rewind, Austin: From the drunken debauchery on Sixth Street to the soothing sound of violins

Posted by Alex Pickett on Nov. 7, 2009, at 6:40 pm

Routes Music is a documentary film acting as a roving music census, taking in the true musical passions (and disgusts) of the American people. We’re traveling all across the country, stopping along the way to interview local bands, take footage of live performances and chat with anyone and everyone. Learn more about the documentary here; check out all previous entries here.

The first thing we noticed on Austin’s infamous Sixth Street was the preponderance of clubs. Not the live music that Austin is known for, but booming bass beckoning babes in short skirts (and the dudes chasing them). Roads blocked off … police bored and leering … drunk college kids swaying from one sidewalk to another … a street musician, here or there, drowned out by the latest pop hits.

To find some music that wasn’t prerecorded, the Routes Music crew had to drive across town to locally-owned and operated Violins Etc., a full service string shop.

Inside, we were greeted by hundreds of violins – some brand new and ready for sale, others in various states of disrepair – as well as the employees who fixed them.

Routes Music rewind, New Orleans: Living Room Studio, Lovie Dovies, the Blackbelt Band (video)

It’s 8 p.m. and Phil is driving through a torrential rainstorm in an abandoned part of New Orleans’ West End. He’s running his hand through his hair, bent over the steering wheel, trying to find Magellan Road. The GPS isn’t working and every street seems to lead back to the interstate we just exited. A tiny brown Chihuahua looks lost, too, as it darts across the road and between two houses.

It’s enough rain to make a New Orleans native nervous.

Routes Music, New Orleans: Delicious Gloom, girls gone wild on guitar and drums in the French Quarter (video)

As with anything in life – including music documentaries – the unexpected moments are usually the best. Our time in New Orleans was no different.

On Friday, we came across two girls – Anastasia Euthanasia and Joy Deemster – performing on the street in the French Quarter (in front of a police station no less!). Going by the name Delicious Gloom, the girls played a highly infectious song for us. After days of Los Mega Boyz’ “Selena” looping in our heads, it was welcome relief.

8 tips for dating younger women

Posted by Miss Ginger Millay on Sep. 14, 2009, at 3:00 pm

I’ve spoken with many women about their experiences dating older men. After repeatedly hearing the samelolita1 pros and cons, I decided to compile a list of tips for men who would like to successfully date younger women. You’re welcome.

1) Don’t make a big deal about the age difference. You can’t completely avoid the discussion, but unless she specifically finds it exciting (some do), don’t bring it up often. Avoid making her feel like a fetish item. Instead, let her know that you really like her and she just happens to be younger. Read the rest of this entry »

From Twilight to True Blood: What is it about Vampires that makes ladies’ hearts pound?

Posted by Rabid Nick Refer on May. 26, 2009, at 11:34 am

What is it about immortal blood sucking broodaholics that makes women swoon?  Is it the danger?  Is it the biting?  Because trust me girls, I can nibble your neck and I’ve been known to walk fast with a pair of scissors in my hand.  Or perhaps it’s something unattainable to us, the meek mortal man.

Vampire stories such as Twilight and True Blood are currently the hottest things on the market from books, to film/TV and even sex toys.  What gives?  The thought of having my blood removed from the warmth of my veins does not get me wild in the pants.  But the ladies, the ladies do love their undead bad boys.  They want to be taken to the edge and peer over the side.  It drives their juices and makes their heart feel a new sense of life.  The thought that you could be laying with your lover and in the throes of passion and he could take your life must be a mighty intoxicant.  But give me a shot of tequila over a chalice of blood any day.

Edward Cullen does have quite a few more desirable qualities than say Count Dracula.  For one he doesn’t consistently look like he’s heading to the opera.  He’s a moody, anti-social, and more Abercrombie than Hot Topic.  And you’d being lying if you couldn’t admit those eyes are DREAMY. Antonio’s top 10 ice-breakers for women to use on men

Posted by Antonio D on May. 13, 2009, at 12:16 pm

The dating scene has changed since our parents were trolling the bars. It’s 2009 and finally women are taking the initiative, approaching guys with pick-up lines.  Sure, there’s the cheesy ones that make us cringe…but when delivered well, still work. But I’m not talking about those gimmicky lines.  I’m talking about the memorable lines that struck up a good conversation, and often led to some bedroom escapades.  Don’t get me wrong…these are VERY simple, but they work, probably because they are so sincere.

RE: Do girls have dirty minds?

Posted by Isla Green on May. 7, 2009, at 8:28 pm

Yes, Antonio, girls have dirty minds. It’s just that we can hide our naught thoughts better; we don’t get raging hard-ons or try to fuck men the instant we meet them. This stems from the fact that when we’re young, we’re expected to control our desires much more so than men.

I think of dirty things all the time no matter where I am. I’ll see a good looking guy and almost instantly wonder what it would feel like to have him inside me, or as you mentioned, bending me over a pool table. Regardless, women contain these dirty thoughts because they are secondary. Above sexual satisfaction, women want respect and loyalty, which we can’t get unless we act like ladies. Do girls have dirty minds too?

Posted by Antonio D on May. 1, 2009, at 12:29 pm

Lets face it.  There aren’t many guys out there that haven’t been told by a female that they have a dirty mind.  Hell, I’ll admit it!  I’m a horndog.  I’m a walking hard-on.  I’ll even go as far as saying I’m a bit of a pervert.  So what? I think girls might be just as dirty as guys are!

As terrible as this all sounds, I’ll start off by saying that I’m happily married and would never cheat on my wife.  She knows damn well that I’m a flirt and is often reminded by female reactions that I regularly get sex offers while I’m out having fun.   With that being said, I’ll lay out a situation that happened to me a few days ago that I’m sure many people can relate to.  As I got to work, half asleep still due to lack of coffee, I stumbled into the elevator Read the rest of this entry »

Suicide Girls: Beauty Redefined is a big book of naked ladies

Posted by Brian Ries on Jan. 13, 2009, at 2:56 pm

When we received Suicide Girls: Beauty Redefined in the mail this morning, I had to fight Leilani for ownership. She saw the “Beauty Redefined” tag and thought it would be an exploration of feminist art. Uhm, no.

The Suicide Girls site has been doing their very own style of highly profitable beauty defining since 2001 by featuring pictures of naked ladies that aren’t your typical porn-tastically plastic adult entertainers. Most look like the girl next door, if the girl next door was into lots of ink and piercings. Many were goth-y, punk-y, or alt-y. Different, but only in relation to other porn models.

And though they were beautiful, Suicide Girls also seemed comfortingly normal. Better yet, many of the girls would actually talk to people who viewed their pictures, either via a blog or through message boards. Like getting a lap dance from an especially talkative stripper, Suicide Girls made it easy for an average Joe to imagine that he actually has a chance.

Its had an impact, sure, and pretty much single-handedly launched the alt-porn movement, but saying that Suicide Girls has redefined beauty is more than a stretch.

More (likely nsfw pics, depending on where you work) after the jump:
