Posted by Katie M. on Jul. 26, 2009, at 12:19 pm

What’s the buzz on the latest issues in the Green Community? Check out what you may have missed this last week:

Living with the land: Florida’s first Earthship (video) – Eric Stewart gives a firsthand look at Florida’s first Earthship in Manatee County, and gets his hands dirty while helping out.

Not getting a million-dollar bonus this year? Think local stimulus- Scott Milinder shows us a real stimulus package that will work for us: we all commit to “Buying Local First.” According to recent economic studies, shifting your buying habits to locally owned businesses creates more circulation of money, more economic activity and more jobs in the local economy.

Eco-friendly summertime fashion accessories- Are you searching for a unique and beautiful purse to enhance your summer wardrobe? Then why not consider one of these recycled handbags that are made from recycled items that help to promote a cleaner and healthier world, reports Jen Meier.

Do It Today: A Patriotic Musical, all about bats, indy biz meeting

Posted by Franki Weddington on Jul. 1, 2009, at 12:00 am

There Is Freedom Here! is a patriotic musical production that honors our armed forces and Independence Day. It features favorites like “The Stars and Stripes Forever,” “God Bless the USA,” and, of course, the national anthem. The inspirational music is accompanied by lights, indoor fireworks, flying confetti and a dance performance. Nursery care is available during the event. 7 p.m. Weds., July 1, Park Place Wesleyan Church, 4400 70th Ave. N., Pinellas Park, free, 727-526-3674.

The Secret World of Bats captures the fascinating nocturnal habits of bats in slow-motion photography — Planet Earth-style. Take a stroll across the preserve in search of bats and other nighttime creatures after the film. 7-8:30 p.m. Weds., July 1, Brooker Creek Preserve Environmental Education Center, 3940 Keystone Road, Tarpon Springs, free, 727-453-6800, pinellascounty.org.

SPECIAL (St. Petersburg’s Exciting Community of Independents And Locals), a new organization designed to support local business, hosts Carla Jimenez, a founding member of the Tampa Independent Business Alliance. She speaks out about the importance of independent businesses to a vibrant and dynamic community and how to make sure our hard-earned dollars stay in St. Pete. 6 p.m. Weds., July 1, Craftsman House, 2955 Central Ave., St. Petersburg, free.
