This weekend’s best bets in Bay area music: Gov’t Mule, Tommy Castro, John Stowell, Casiotone for the Painfully Alone, and more

Posted by Leilani Polk on Jan. 21, 2010, at 1:59 pm

A quick breakdown of this weekend’s most worthy concerts beginning with Thursday, ’cause that’s when the weekend really starts, right? For a more comprehensive schedule, check out our Upcoming Concerts page.

THURSDAY, JANUARY 21mule1
An Evening with Gov’t Mule [pictured] I interviewed veteran axeman and Gov’t Mule frontman Warren Haynes right around the release of 2006’s High and Mighty. I will always remember his response when I asked him about being one of the hardest working musicians around (he also plays full time with the Allman Brothers Band and in various side projects): “It’s easy to be a workaholic when you love your job, and I love my job. There’s worse things I could be doing in life.” In the nearly four years since we spoke, he’s released three more albums with Gov’t Mule — 2007’s Mighty High, a collection of reggae and dub renditions of Mule covers and originals with guest appearances by Michael Franti, Toots Hibbert, and Willi Williams; a two-disc live recording in 2008, Holy Haunted House; and in 2009, By a Thread, Gov’t Mule’s ninth full-length and their first featuring new bassist Jorgen Carlsson, who replaced Andy Hess in 2008. Their music is first-rate Southern gritty, blues stompin’ jam rock with lots of Haynes’ trademark soloing laid over top of it like sausage gravy, meaty and delicious. 8 p.m., The Ritz Ybor, Ybor City, $28.

Coffee Project w/Jason Jackman Coffee Project brightens their acoustic melodies with the bouncy round sound of trombone and the endearing nasally vocals of co-singers Jake Crown and Buddy Schaub. The Gainesville punk pop duo released their first recording, the eight-song Easy Does It, last May. 9 p.m., New World Brewery, Ybor City, $6.

crashkingsCrash Kings [pictured] w/Day Break/The Starlight Getaway/Not Tonight Josephine/Nothing Promised/Before You Say No/No Inside/Shadowself LA rock trio Crash Kings bring sauntering ’70s blues to their West Coast brand of alt rock. In the Zeppelin-inspired single, “Mountain Man,” heavy, slow-pounding drumbeats accompany the commanding plunking of piano and powerful wail of frontman Tony Beliveau, who has an appealing way of stringing words together, like “I’m sittin’ on top of a mountain / She’s rockin’ that valley down below …” The band just released their self-titled debut LP last year and are currently touring in support. 6 p.m. doors, Orpheum, Ybor City, $9 (all ages).

Supersuckers w/Nervous Turkey/No Loves/Meet Me OverBoard Seattle country punk foursome Supersuckers offers such thought-provoking lyrics as “Are you ready? (Yes, I’m ready!) / Then grab a drink and chug-a-lug / have some sex and take some drugs.” Lead singer/bassist Eddie Spaghetti has a rusty drawl that goes well with the band’s hard-trudging sound. 8 p.m., State Theatre, St. Petersburg, $12. Do It This Weekend, Part Deux: Star Wars In Concert, Pontypool, pig roast, In the Heights and more

Posted by Franki Weddington on Oct. 30, 2009, at 12:14 pm

starwarsIf you’re already worn out on Halloween, check out our picks for non-ghoul-related weekend events. (But if you’re still looking for something to do for Halloween, check out our comprehensive listings here)

At Star Wars: In Concert, you can hear all six of John Williams’ epic soundtracks played by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, narrated live by Anthony Daniels, who played C-3PO in all six films. Specially edited footage, projected on a three-story tall, high-def LED superscreen, adds to the spectacle. A collection of costumes, props, artifacts, production artwork and behind-the-scenes videos from the Lucasfilm Archives — many that have never before left Skywalker Ranch — accompany the tour. Visit StarWarsInConcert.com for more info. Sun., Nov. 1, 4 p.m., St. Pete Times Forum, Tampa, $32. 25-$72. 25, stpetetimesforum.com.

See director Bruce McDonald’s Pontypool, the latest installment in the International Cinema Series, if you like weird Canadians and French subtitles. Shock jock Grant Mazzy discovers a strange phenomena during his daily broadcast, and begins to suspect that his own words may be causing the virus infestation causing Pontypool’s townspeople to become eerily violent. Visit eckerd.edu/ic for more info. Fri., Oct. 30, 7 p.m., Eckerd College Miller Auditorium. St. Petersburg, free.

After the break: Pig Roast Gone Sassy, In the Heights, Stride for Strays, Tampa Bay Steel Orchestra and more Read the rest of this entry »

On the Radar: Singin’ in the Rain

Posted by Franki Weddington on Oct. 27, 2009, at 12:00 am

Singin in the Rain_Gene Kelly see and doWelcome to On the Radar, where we preview up-and-coming arts events to mark your calendar for. Most people are headed out for thrills and chills this weekend, but why not enjoy a good ol’ song and dance at Eight O’Clock Theatre’s presentation of Singin’ In the Rain at the Largo Cultural Center?

When “talkies” threaten to take over Hollywood in the 1920s, silent movie star Lina Lamont’s shrilly-screeching voice threatens to become box office poison. Up-and-coming actress Kathy Selden agrees to voice-over Lina’s latest role, but the diva is determined to cause trouble. Meanwhile, stuntman-turned-Hollywood-heartthrob Don Lockwood (famously played by Gene Kelly onscreen) is stuck in the middle of it all in this romantic comedy that offer memorable numbers like “Fit As a Fiddle,” “Make ‘Em Laugh,” “Would You?” and, of course, “Singin’ In the Rain.” Oct. 30-Nov. 15, 8 p.m. Thurs.-Sat., 2 p.m. Sun., Largo Cultural Center, 105 Central Park Dr., Largo, . $26, $16 students, eightoclocktheatre.com. – Franki Weddington
