NBC refuses to run PETA’s Thanksgiving Day ad about factory farmed turkey (video)

Posted by Katie M. on Nov. 24, 2009, at 4:30 pm

peta_thxgiving_adThis controversial ad by PETA (below) addresses some of the appalling living conditions and slaughtering methods of turkeys. Apparently, this ad was set to run on NBC during the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade this year.

NBC pulled the plug on this one and wanted statistics to back up these claims about conditions in factory farms. That request was then answered by Patrick Martins, head of Slow Food USA, in a piece run in the New York Times today. NBC then stated, “this commercial does not meet NBC Universal standards” and still declined to run it. (Read PETA’s blog response.)

What do you think? Do you think PETA’s in-your-face tactics are too much for mainstream media or do people have the right to know what’s really going on with their food?

Video after the break.

TV Review: V, “Pilot”

Posted by Rabid Nick Refer on Nov. 4, 2009, at 1:18 pm

vThe visitors have returned to Earth, and this time they’re bringing more intrigue and drama to prime-time TV. V is a science fiction reboot that debuted this week on ABC after a load of publicity and excitement. The original was a major event over on NBC during the ‘80s, and the mouse house’s flagship network is hoping for similar results with this update. The premiere episode landed Tuesday night, but did it live up to the hype?

Music links for Friday, Oct. 16: The Flaming Lips, Garth Brooks, John Mayer, Bon Jovi, The Arctic Monkeys, The Cranberries and more

Posted by Kristina Welch on Oct. 16, 2009, at 3:51 pm

A fresh batch of music links to start the weekend off right.

  • The Flaming Lips plan to cover Pink Floyd’s classic 1973 album Dark Side of the Moon, a collaborative effort with Stardeath and White Dwarfs. Let’s just state the obvious, here: It takes some serious balls to redo Dark Side of the Moon. Don’t mess this up, Lips.lips
  • Garth Brooks will be performing at Las Vegas’ Wynn resort on Oct. 24, but promises the show will be completely antithetical to the typical, flashy Sin City show. In fact, it will be reminiscent of his original Stillwater, Okla., shows in 1983. Because people visiting Vegas really wish they could feel like they’re living it up in Oklahoma circa 1983.
  • John Mayer’s new album, Battle Studies, drops Nov. 17. Mayer will also perform a concert that night airing live on Fuse. Reasons as to why Battle Studies was not titled Songs About Jennifer Aniston have yet to be announced.
  • Weezer’s Rivers Cuomo is writing a song with Katy Perry that will possibly be featured on her follow-up to One of the Boys. It’s like Cuomo knew this collaboration was written in the stars: He looks just like Buddy Holly, and (oh oh) Perry bears resemblance to Mary Tyler Moore.
  • Bon Jovi is now the “artist in residence” for NBC to promote their new album, The Circle, which lands in stores Nov. 12. I wouldn’t mind if Jon Bon Jovi pulled a Rick Springfield and bared some of his finer assets to the world.
  • The Arctic Monkeys released a video for “Cornerstone,” the second single off of Humbug. The video looks like it was inspired by a homemade YouTube video — Arctic Monkey see, Arctic Monkey do — but its simplicity complements the loveliness of the tune. Watch the video and get more music links after the jump. Read the rest of this entry »

Heidi Montag does Playboy

Posted by Emmalee on Jul. 28, 2009, at 7:11 am

Since MTV’s The Hills began in the summer of 2006, Heidi Montag has gone from Lauren Conrad’s sweet best friend to Spencer Pratt’s feisty vixen. Montag has seemingly tried everything to stay in the celebrity spotlight, starting with her awful music video (directed by her new husband, Spencer) of Montag running and rolling on the beach in a bikini.

WFLA/NewsChannel 8 slated to air anti-gay infomercial tonight after St. Pete Pride

Posted by David Warner on Jun. 27, 2009, at 6:11 pm

Both Equality Florida and St. Pete Pride are asking supporters to call WFLA/NewsChannel 8 and protest the airing at 7 p.m. tonight of the hour-long anti-gay infomercial Speechless: Silencing the Christians. Sponsored by the American Family Association, it trots out AFA’s usual lies about “special rights” and “the radical homosexual activist agenda,” and has already been condemned by the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD), which supported previous efforts to postpone or prevent airing of the show in Grand Rapids, Michigan and Columbus, Ohio.  I contacted WFLA-TV for comment this afternoon about the questionable timing of airing such a program the day of St. Pete Pride, but I was told that the only people who could address the issue were in the programming department and were not available over the weekend.

Banned PETA ad

Posted by Shawn Alff on Feb. 12, 2009, at 4:07 pm

The only time I ever seriously considered becoming a vegetarian was when trying to impress a vegetarian love interest. Perhaps PETA had this in mind when it produced its latest commercial for a red-blooded Super Bowl audience. NBC rejected this clip via email, listing the following concerns

‘Veggie Love’: PETA’s Banned Super Bowl Ad

-licking pumpkin
-touching her breast with her hand while eating broccoli
-pumpkin from behind between legs
-rubbing pelvic region with pumpkin
-screwing herself with broccoli (fuzzy)
-asparagus on her lap appearing as if it is ready to be inserted into vagina
-licking eggplant
-rubbing asparagus on breast.

If there isn’t already a term for sex with vegetables there needs to be one. Suggestions? “Salad tossing” is taken. Smashing pumpkins… Salad shooting… Broccoli banging

The Short List: SNL’s turkeys on the run

Posted by Joe Bardi on Nov. 24, 2008, at 6:00 am

We’re kicking off Thanksgiving week in style with SNL’s “turkeys on the run” skit from over the weekend. Enjoy.

  • The incredibly ballooning stimulus package.
  • Citibank looks to be the next member of the bailout club.
  • Gas prices continue their long overdue plunge.
  • Sometimes it sucks to be an astronaut.
  • How many blogs does the world need?
  • Hypocrisy alert: NBC axed the staff of The Weather Channel’s Forecast Earth environmental program during the network’s self-proclaimed “Green Week.”
  • Twilight sets box office records. Good thing the sequel is already in the works.
  • After a rough start, the Bucs roll over the Lions.
