Bibliophilic Burlesque: naked girls reading (video & photos NSFW)

Posted by Miss Ginger Millay on Oct. 26, 2009, at 9:18 pm

marsh-nude-woman-reading-pastels-early-1940sEye candy rubbed elbows with intellectual stimulation last weekend at Madame X, a dimly-lit bar in Greenwich Village. I’ve seen many burlesque shows since I moved to Manhattan, but none as thrilling as this performance by Naked Girls Reading. Lead by burlesque star and NGR creator, Michelle L’amour, the performance featured beautiful, nude women reading selections from banned books.

Doesn’t sound sexy? You’re crazy! But perhaps this clip and some photos* from the show will change your mind… Read the rest of this entry »

My so-called pregnancy: an abortion story (part two)

Posted by Miss Ginger Millay on Sep. 10, 2009, at 10:39 pm

choiceLast week, I posted the first part of a story about my recent abortion. I left off on a Saturday, puking my guts out and trying to figure out how I was going to pay for the procedure. Here’s the second portion of my story:

By Sunday, I was still a mess: sleepy, queasy, grumpy, bloaty (7 dwarves of pregnancy?) and my tits hurt like hell.

The previous evening, I had canceled plans with my ex, let’s call him “Marc,” telling him I had a stomach flu. When he called the next day and I was still sick, he wanted to take me to see a doctor. I was stuck: I wanted to spare his feelings, but hated lying to him.

“I’m not sick,” I began. “I’m, well… I’m pregnant.” Read the rest of this entry »

The Age of Stupid: An eco docu-drama simulcast live in a one-night-only event

Posted by Katie M. on Sep. 9, 2009, at 4:00 pm

age-of-stupidThe Age of Stupid is an eco docu-drama directed by Franny Armstrong (Mc Libel, Drowned Out) and will be shown as a “first of it’s kind” worldwide live event- simulcast live from a solar tent in New York to only 440 movie theaters in the nation, in conjunction with UN Climate Week.

The film stars Pete Postlethwaite (The Usual Suspects) as a global archivist in the future who is wondering why the heck people didn’t get the clue about global climate change and stop it when we still had a chance. It also interweaves six dramatic stories of people from around the globe facing different ecological crises and features present day news clips that are featured in this future media archive.

Quickie CD Reviews: Jay Reatard’s Watch Me Fall, Jack Peñate’s Tonight’s Today and Pablo’s There’s Rope to Leave (video)

Posted by Ivan Pena on Aug. 18, 2009, at 12:00 pm

Jay Reatard
Watch Me Fall

(Matador Records)

Jay Reatard’s latest, Watch Me Fall (out August 18) is a scrappy garage punk record that could be easily confused with any other scrappy garage punk record released in the last 10 years. It’s not bad, just not anything new or different. The songwriting is repetitive, but enjoyable, with acoustic guitar here and there to help with song dynamics. With that said, as a fan of scrappy garage punk, I enjoyed the blitzkrieg-style songs that never lets up and drives his quirkiness home in every track. Highlights are “It Ain’t Going to Save Me,” “Can’t Do It Anymore” and “Rotten Mind.”

Trying to score with Tampa’s lingerie football team

Posted by Rabid Nick Refer on Jul. 30, 2009, at 1:23 pm

Earlier this week hopeful young ladies attended the Tampa Breeze tryouts to become part of the bay area’s hottest sports team.  The St Pete Times Forum was loaded with prospective players suited up in T-shirts, short shorts, and shoulder pads.  The Lingerie Football League may sound cute, but it’s no joke. These girls are ready to play hardcore smash-mouth football, all while looking hotter than any cheerleaders safely yelling from the sidelines.

Confessions of a Tampa call girl part 2

Posted by Rabid Nick Refer on Jul. 15, 2009, at 4:19 pm

Last week I encountered my first call girl, “Broadway Mary,” when I stopped to ask for directions. Mary claimed she was in Ybor City on “business” that had fallen through; she asked for a ride home. She was reasonably attractive, and I was completely lost, so I complied.

Exclusive: On set photos of Gerard Butler in The Bounty starring Jennifer Aniston

Posted by Joe Bardi on Jul. 14, 2009, at 1:21 pm

For more news and reviews of the summer’s biggest movies, check out the CL Movies & Television site.

My man on the streets on New York (we’ll call him GOX) snapped the following photos from the set of The Bounty, a new action/comedy starring Jennifer Aniston and Gerard Butler. Unfortunately for GOX, Aniston was M.I.A. when he was around (perhaps she was filming at the NY Daily News), but he did manage to catch some shots of Butler interacting with parade floats and the cops. (That’s him above, mid-bust by New York’s finest.)

Confessions of a Tampa Bay Call Girl Pt 1

Posted by Rabid Nick Refer on Jul. 7, 2009, at 11:44 am

When I ventured to Ybor City last week for The Hold Steady show at the Ritz, I had no idea I’d come face to face with my very first professional sex worker.  Or in street terms, you might refer to her as a call girl.  An unplanned event like this could only take place on a damp, sticky night in Ybor.

MLB: An important first week for the Tampa Bay Rays

Posted by Ryan Schreiber on Apr. 13, 2009, at 11:09 am

I realize that there is definitely a difference between the first week in April and the last week in September (or even October). The Royals were in first place in the AL Central until April 14th a year ago before remembering they were the Royals. A poll on ESPN this weekend asked how much stock you put in a team’s record after the first week. Rightly, the vast majority of America said none at all.  That’s not to say the first week is completely useless, though.  Storylines develop. Questions are not answered in the first week, but questions can be raised.

After this 2008 game, Morpheus contacted CoCo Crisp offering to liberate him from the Matrix.

After this 2008 game Morpheus contacted Coco Crisp offering to liberate him from the Matrix.

In the first series of the season Tampa Bay took 2 of 3 at Fenway Park.  That’s not the whole story, though.  Peter Gammons of ESPN said that while the Rays won the opening series in Fenway last week, they didn’t NEED to. Gammons’s point was that you can’t “fake it” for 162 games (i.e., that the Rays really do have the talent to compete). He’s right that the Rays have the talent, but assessing whether or not the Rays possess the talent to compete isn’t why that series was important. Read the rest of this entry »

Alex Rodriguez admits to steroid use in ESPN interview today (Video)

Posted by Stephen Hammill on Feb. 9, 2009, at 2:42 pm

This is just coming down the pipe: New York Yankees‘ third baseman Alex Rodriguez sat down for an interview with Peter Gammons of ESPN this afternoon when he admitted to using steroids between 2001-2003. The interview will air on Sportscenter at 6 p.m. tonight.

Here’s an exerpt:

His voice shaking at times, Alex Rodriguez met head-on allegations that he tested positive for steroids six years ago, telling ESPN on Monday that he did take performance-enhancing drugs while playing for the Texas Rangers during a three-year period beginning in 2001.

“When I arrived in Texas in 2001, I felt an enormous amount of pressure. I needed to perform, and perform at a high level every day,” Rodriguez told ESPN’s Peter Gammons in an interview in Miami Beach, Fla. “Back then, [baseball] was a different culture…

ISO the perfect pizza, preferably in Pinellas

Posted by Louis Thornton on Feb. 2, 2009, at 9:13 am

Sample "Perfect" pizza from Prato in Montreal

What’s your idea of a fantastic pizza? I’m on a mission to find one. Hopefully, close to home.

In my humble opinion, this was a perfect pizza. It comes from Prato’s in Montreal (that’s right, Canada). I can tell you with confidence that I have not had great pizza in north Pinellas County and I am just beside myself over it. I’m trying not to be overly critical about this, either.

We do have GOOD pizza here and I frequent several establishments. It’s just that I’ve had fantastic pizza in other places and I’m sure that SOMEWHERE in Tampa Bay it exists but I am struggling in my little neighborhood.

It all started when I tasted over-the-top, wow-this-is-good, I-could-eat-this-every-day pizza in a couple of other cities. Of course New York has great pizza everywhere, but when I tasted pies from Montreal and Westerly, Rhode Island that were just exquisite, I knew we were missing something here.

Let me explain MY idea of perfect and see if it matches yours: Read the rest of this entry »

The future of foie gras: Dan Barber talks about Eduardo Sousa

Posted by Brian Ries on Jan. 26, 2009, at 1:28 pm

Do you refrain from eating foie gras due to ethical concerns? Understandable, even if I personally overcome that ethical dilemma thanks to the fuindamental deliciousness of those fatted duck and goose livers. One of the biggest problems most folk have with the production of foie gras — besides the industrialized nature of almost every livestock operation — is gavage, or force-feeding.

Well, you might not have to forego this tasty delicacy any longer. Read the rest of this entry »

A house divided: Florida vs. Oklahoma equals domestic unrest

Posted by Holley Sinn on Dec. 15, 2008, at 11:32 am

Sooner Holley: About halfway through regular season play, my husband and I started talking about college football armageddon: The Florida Gators made an incredible turnaround after Tim Tebow’s moving speech following the Ole Miss game, and the Oklahoma Sooners started racking up touchdown after touchdown against every opponent following the Texas game.  Could it be possible that our two teams might meet in the BCS National Championship Game?

When conference championship weekend came to an end, we looked at each other and with a single glance; the battle line was drawn.  Not only would our teams, who had never in history met on the gridiron, see each other in a BCS match-up, it would be for the National Title.  Ever since, I have been inundated with Tebow propaganda… Read the rest of this entry »
