Size Matters opens at Nova 535: Big art, big crowd (photos)

The Vitale Brothers were the stars of the show, with a supporting cast of artists who brought their insight and character to the exhibit. Do It Today: Socially conscious films, and a night at the symphony

WMNF hosts two film screenings featuring two environmental films: Kilowatt Ours, about practical ways to save energy, and Mountain Top Removal, which looks at the destructive effect the coal industry’s practice of blowing up the tops of mountains in Appalachia is having on communities and the rivers of the Eastern U.S. Both screenings are followed by a discussion with local environmental leaders. 7 p.m., The Globe Coffee Lounge, St. Petersburg, 727-898-JAVA, and Tampa Pitcher Show, Tampa, 813-963-0578, $7.

Also tonight:

The World-renowned conductor Philippe Entremont leads the Munich Symphony Orchestra through an all-Beethoven program. 8 p.m., Ruth Eckerd Hall, Clearwater, 727-791-7400.

Nova 535 Art Lounge hosts a screening of Food Matters, which looks at our nation’s current state of health and ways to improve it with conventional medicine and nutritional therapy. 7-10 p.m., St. Petersburg, free admission.

Mississippi blues fusion “juke joint duo” Cedric Burnside (pictured, right) and Lightnin’ Malcom (left) play a show at Skipper’s Smokehouse. 8 p.m., $8. The Skipper’s show has been cancelled due to a death in Burnside’s family, but there’s still plenty of other noteworthy live music take place tonight — read about the Black Diamond Heavies (pictured) in Tampa Calling, and Bob Weir and Lorna Bracewell in Upcoming Concerts.

Largo Cultural Center presents a touring incarnation of the hit off-Broadway musical, The Altar Boyz, about a Christian boy band enjoying success from America’s fascination with religion. 7:30 p.m., $33 VIP/$30 general/$25 seniors/$15 students 18 and under, 727-587-6793.

Los Angeles-by-way-of-South Africa songwriter Karma brings her acoustic ballads to St. Petersburg. A Girl Named Chuck provides support. 8 p.m., Nova 535 Art Lounge, St. Petersburg, $12.

Soulful Arts Dance Academy stages a preview performance of its fifth annual production of Langston Hughes’ Black Nativity, A Gospel Song Play. 7:30 p.m., Studio at 620, St. Petersburg, free admission, reservations required; 727-895-6620.
