An unexpected but enthralling update from Phil Bardi of Routes Music:
Austin is a city with a long tradition of many things, from mass murders to good music. So, it’s no surprise that many claim the state capital of Texas is haunted.
On Saturday, while coming down Brazos Drive in downtown Austin, I snapped some photos of Driskill Hotel.
While looking through my pictures tonight, I came upon these two similar photos:
A veritable dance party erupted at Crowbar this past Tuesday evening during and between splendid sets by Vivian Girls (NYC), and Tampa’s Sleepy Vikings and Hippodrome.
Have Gun, Will Travel (pictured below), Matt Butcher, John Ralston, and Mike Dunn & The Kings of New England created a mini-Americana fest at New World Brewery this past Friday, September 11, a show brought to you by New Granada Presents.

Kreative Key sits down with photographer and gallery owner Marina Williams to discuss TRA’shion Fashion, coming to ARTPool Gallery July 11th…
KK – So Marina, ARTPool gallery is gearing up for another TRA’shion Fashion Show. If you’ve never been to TRA’shion Fashion, what is it and what’s it like?
MW – TRA’shion Fashion is one of the Tampa Bay’s best creative couture fashion shows. It combines ingenuity with recycling and challenges designers to think outside of the box. Highlighting high-fashion runway attire and the top models in Florida, TRA’shion Fashion took St. Pete by storm last year and is going to top itself with an even more extreme show on July 11th. A definite event to pencil in and experience if you love fashion, wearable art & support local art, as this show features designers from ages 18 to 80.
KK – That sounds amazing! I’m sure anyone into Project Runway would really enjoy this event. If you came last year and saw TRA’shion Fashion, do you have any new surprises for those party people? Read the rest of this entry »

#2 in a series on water, water conservation, and Tampa Bay’s water problems.
Nearly every Westerner I have ever known takes fresh water completely for granted. Therefore, I figured I’d start this series on water with some facts about pure water. Approximately 90% of your body weight is water. Water composes roughly 60% of an average human male body, 55% of the average woman and somewhere between 70 and 80 percent of your brain. The exact amounts can differ by several percentage points depending on individual human weight and health, but no matter what the exact percentage, every living human is mostly water. Water covers roughly 71% of earth’s surface. So, what is water? Read the rest of this entry »
Summer is coming up, and what better way to start it off than with a sneak peak at some new fashions? In addition to a killer photo shoot by Athena Torri, I have some exciting news about a new store opening in Tampa! Designer Raven Reda of Suspicious Package has wrangled in some great independent designers, artists and Tattoo..ers(?) to unite in a hip store on Howard Ave., called F.A.T. ink.
F.A.T. ink will have its soft opening May 1. We’ll get Raven in the studio later this month for a podcast to chat more about the specs and future of the store. Did I mention that Aleka Phoenix is finally going to have a steady place for people to buy clothing and accessories?
So to get you excited for all this news and the highly anticipated summer line from Aleka Phoenix check out the some shots from photoshoot”Electric” by Athena Torri with models Jojo & Jonathan Rosa, hair by our own Fusionista Tara at Salon 54 and makeup by Abra Molinari: Read the rest of this entry »
When we received Suicide Girls: Beauty Redefined in the mail this morning, I had to fight Leilani for ownership. She saw the “Beauty Redefined” tag and thought it would be an exploration of feminist art. Uhm, no.
The Suicide Girls site has been doing their very own style of highly profitable beauty defining since 2001 by featuring pictures of naked ladies that aren’t your typical porn-tastically plastic adult entertainers. Most look like the girl next door, if the girl next door was into lots of ink and piercings. Many were goth-y, punk-y, or alt-y. Different, but only in relation to other porn models.
And though they were beautiful, Suicide Girls also seemed comfortingly normal. Better yet, many of the girls would actually talk to people who viewed their pictures, either via a blog or through message boards. Like getting a lap dance from an especially talkative stripper, Suicide Girls made it easy for an average Joe to imagine that he actually has a chance.
Its had an impact, sure, and pretty much single-handedly launched the alt-porn movement, but saying that Suicide Girls has redefined beauty is more than a stretch.
More (likely nsfw pics, depending on where you work) after the jump:
Now that I’ve successfully tricked most of you into reading this post, I’ll fill you in on what “food porn” really is. And, no, sadly, it has nothing to do with naked people and food. That’s another fetish altogether.
Food porn is the foodie craze that’s been sweeping the internet, especially in the blogosphere. Simply, it’s extreme close-up shots of delicious and delectable looking edible delights. The forerunner to the fad and the site that drew all the attention is FoodPornDaily. It features a new food picture every day to salivate over — showing every nook and cranny, leaving nothing to the imagination — and has been called, “a great website that satisfies our natural human desire for food porn.” They include recipes for the dishes featured on the site and even allow picture submissions (for those of you amateur food pornographers). It can get pretty competitive.
I’ll admit that I have a problem (is there a twelve step program for something like this?) — I get my fix every day and I’m not ashamed of it. If you’re really curious and think you’re ready for this sort of online smut, be sure to also check out:
Are you an amateur food porn producer? Send us your own lascivious food shots and we’ll feature them here on Creative Loafing.
