Routes Music, Indio: A look at Phish Festival 8 from the costumes to the light show

Posted by Alex Pickett on Nov. 3, 2009, at 10:36 am

Routes Music is a documentary film acting as a roving music census, taking in the true musical passions (and disgusts) of the American people. We’re traveling all across the country, stopping along the way to interview local bands, take footage of live performances and chat with anyone and everyone. Learn more about the documentary here; check out all previous entries here.

“Where eeez yer pipe?”

A 6’4 security guard towered over me, glaring.

“Where eeez yer pipe?” he repeated in a thick Islands accent.

“What?” I replied, not sure he really just asked me what I think he just asked me.

“Where eeez yer pipe?” he asked again.

“My what?” I said again, still shocked.

“Yer pipe. Yer pipe.”

Now he was aggravated. I’m enjoying feigning ignorance.

“I don’t know what you’re saying, man.”

The guard switches tactics.

“Drugs?”

I smile.

“No, no drugs.”

“OK, go ahead.”

So began my very first experience at an extended-day music festival, and only my second time ever seeing the seminal jam band, Phish. Luckily, the rest of the three-day fest at the Empire Polo Grounds in Indio, Calif. went smoother than my entry.

Mega Tomago Big Mac from McDonald’s Japan

Posted by Brian Ries on Aug. 17, 2009, at 4:12 pm

The McDonald’s Mega Tomago Big Mac alternative: three beef patties, one Egg McMuffin-style egg, two slices of bacon. I though the Japanese were supposed to be healthy eaters.

Provocative piercings, up close and personal (NSFW Pics)

Posted by InnocentUWish on Jul. 27, 2009, at 9:42 am

People never cease to amaze me when pushing their bodies’ artistic boundaries.  I thought I was daring when I got my nose pierced.  I was in Amsterdam at the time, high on mushrooms, and I thought that a piece of metal in my nose was just what I needed. I’m usually too much of a pussy for shit like this, but some people get off on this kind of pain.  Below, I’ve included some of the most piercing pictures of painful piercings. I can’t even imagine how these people felt during their artistic voyage of self discovery!  My own story of getting my face pierced went a something like this:

Man Manual: hover and smother

Posted by InnocentUWish on Jul. 9, 2009, at 10:54 am

Man Manual, advice #2: Don’t insist on doing everything with your boyfriend.

Your idea of fun might be a long day of primping and shopping, but for a guy that’s the furthest thing from his mind. God gave you “girlfriends” so as not to punish your man with your chick shit outings! Instead of dragging along your boyfriend for an endless day of wandering and waiting while being your human shopping cart, do it with your pals instead.   Read the rest of this entry »

Restaurant Week – Photo contest winner announced

Posted by Joran on Jun. 29, 2009, at 11:34 am

This year, as part of our 2009 Restaurant Week, we not only offered a $25 prix fixe menu at great Bay Area restaurants, but we also added a new “server photo contest.”

We asked everyone participating in Restaurant Week to take a photo of themselves with their menu and their server to be entered to win $500 in CL Deals gift certificates for themselves, $500 in certificates for the server and $1000 ad campaign with CL for the winning restaurant.

This morning, we drew a random number and chose the winning photo. And the winner is …

Casual Catastrophe: learning to stay away from craigslist’s casual encounters

Posted by Rubicon on Jun. 4, 2009, at 4:31 pm

It took an Atacama Desert-like dry spell and a cruel bout of Adderall-induced insomnia to discover the secret to succeeding on Craigslist Casual Encounters. While the morally superior may say that no real ‘success’ could come from this, the morally superior are a bunch of suckers.

Besides, morality wouldn’t keep me from resorting to another Casual Encounter hook-up; Pam would.

Ask any sleaze ball who has ever tried it. If they’re man or woman enough to admit it, they’ll tell you the process of casual encountering is not so casual. Read the rest of this entry »

5 flirting cues that show she’s into you

Posted by Emmalee on Jun. 1, 2009, at 11:50 pm

I’ve been told that I’m a flirt. Yes, I’m in a long-term relationship, but apparently my personality could be defined as “flirtacious.” For years I adamantly denied that I flirted, but I realized it when I started thinking about certain techniques girls can use to pick-up guys. I have definitely used these techniques and can honestly say that if done correctly these have all worked in grabbing a guy’s attention. I’ve narrowed it down to the top five.

Millionaire, Button pull in big Oscar hauls

Posted by David Warner on Jan. 22, 2009, at 8:58 am

Nominations were announced this morning for the Oscars, and there were some surprises — particularly the differing fortunes of two Kate Winslet vehicles: The Reader won several noms, including Best Actress for Winslet (who won a Best Supporting award at the Golden Globes for the same role) and Best Picture. But her Revolutionary Road got snubbed. Other no-shows in the Best Pic list: Clint Eastwood’s Gran Torino and box office champ The Dark Knight.

The top categories:

Awards for Slumdog Millionaire are well-deserved

Posted by Michelle Stark on Jan. 16, 2009, at 6:29 pm

I have a natural and somewhat unexplained affinity for all things having to do with India. I’ve also really liked British director Danny Boyle ever since he made zombie attacks (in 28 Days Later) and heroin addiction (in Trainspotting) seem so aesthetically cool.

So, naturally, when my dad told me about a new Boyle movie called Slumdog Millionaire about a poor Indian kid who ends up winning a million dollars, I was interested.

I wasn’t even deterred by my grandma, who had no problem telling me once she found out I wanted to see the movie that it was the “worst movie of the year.” I love her dearly – but guess what, grandma? Slumdog took away the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture- Drama – and three additional Globes – on Sunday, proving that more than a few people disagree about it being the worst movie of the year… Read the rest of this entry »
