Snipped or unsnipped: the circumcision debate

Posted by Shawn Alff on Jul. 22, 2009, at 4:42 pm

In a recent study of 445 Ugandan women whose sexual partners were recently circumcised, 40% reported improvements in their sex lives, 57% claimed no change, and 3% said their sex lives suffered. The reasons these women gave for how sex improved may surprise you: better hygiene, it took longer for men to climax, and their partners wanted more frequent sex. Read the rest of this entry »

By now the sun was blazing into the room from behind the thick curtains. The shadows from her succulent body fell across his chest as she climbed on top of him. After all the long nights talking and sharing innocent tenderness, the confidence she was exuding was amazing to him.  He had no idea how nervous she really was.  It was now she who had trouble looking at his face.  She had never been able to look into the eyes of a lover until that very moment. Something about finally being with him changed every equation.

No acupuncture needles needed when it comes to Meridian Therapy

An acupuncture study conducted in Seattle, released this month by the Archives of Internal Medicine, that substituted acupuncture needles with toothpicks to stimulate the meridian points, has acupuncture physicians and other Natural Health practitioners scratching their heads. The study used pointed toothpicks to stimulate the body’s meridian or acupuncture points and the results in pain relief were nearly identical to the cases where acupuncture needles were used.

“This study missed the point, ” said Acupuncture Physician Dr. Christy Giallourakis of  the Center for Oriental Medicine in Tarpon Springs, Florida. ”The problem with Western studies of traditional Chinese medicine is that the person conducting the study has to use experts on the placement of the meridian stimulus so that any results will be accurate.  There are 26 meridians but there are many, many, extraordinary points and these points can be inadvertently stimulated by someone who does not understand the system.”  What is used to stimulate the points has little effect on the outcome of the stimulation. “If you put any kind of stimulation to the point you will have a reaction.”

Acupuncture is based on the energy meridians of the body: these meridians are pathways of subtle energy that connect and compliment every organ and function in the body. Along these pathways is an interconnected system of subtle energy that can interrupt pain or enhance sensation depending upon the combinations of stimulated points. The interruption of pain is an important factor in healing. Read the rest of this entry »

A stranger’s gaze: coffeeshop confessions of a college freshman

Posted by Isla Green on May. 24, 2009, at 7:13 pm

I keep looking at his back. I want to leave scratches between his shoulder blades as his chest presses against mine. I want to squeeze my pale, slim legs around his waist until I can’t get any closer. I never want this feeling to leave my body, or his. It’s our secret–a secret only shared between strangers. The strange ones.

He has no idea I’m writing this while I watch him. He doesn’t even know what I want to do to him, or what I want him to do to me. I want those arms wrapped around my lower back, pulling me closer so we can feel every part of ourselves, together, connected as strangers: nothing known, only felt. Does he feel it too? Does he think about me the way I think about him? Does he want me just as bad? Is it strange to feel so passionate about someone I have never talked to, or are strangers the only subjects for true desire?  Read the rest of this entry »
