Best of the Bay: The race for Best Barbecue

Posted by Brian Ries on Aug. 28, 2009, at 1:00 pm

Voting is hot and heavy whenever hardwood smoke and succulent pork get into the mix. After a lot of votes cast, Best Barbecue is still up in the air, with two frontrunners and a whole lot of possible upset contenders close behind. Voting ends monday, so get on the ball, wipe your hands, and vote for the ribs you can’t live without!

Best of the Bay: The race for Best Pizza

Posted by Brian Ries on Aug. 28, 2009, at 11:24 am

Unlike many of the races in our ongoing Best of the Bay Readers’ Poll, this one isn’t all that close. With an astounding 200+ votes, Cappy’s is running away with the prize. However, there’s still time for the other big vote-getters — like Sally O’Neal’s, Mellow Mushroom, Joey Brooklyn’s, and Westshore – or even spots who haven’t tried, to mobilize support and get the vote out over the weekend, before voting ends Monday.

Just three days left to support your favorite pizza joint — plenty of time to tip the scales. Vote now!

Best of the Bay Readers’ Poll: The race for Best New Restaurant

Posted by Brian Ries on Aug. 27, 2009, at 12:24 pm

This is the time when all the spectacular new restaurants that have opened in the past year can shine and all of Tampa Bay can snub our collective noses at the poor economy. But only one worthy spot can win, and the race is close.

Two St. Pete spots — Diner 437 and Queenshead Eurobar — are in the lead, but there’s still plenty of time to shift victory in this close race to another restaurant. Time to mobilize and vote!

Is your favorite spot in the running? Here’s are the leaders in the race so far, with their current tallies: Read the rest of this entry »

Queenshead Eurobar in pictures and video

Posted by Brian Ries on Aug. 26, 2009, at 9:52 am

I reviewed the new Queenshead Eurobar — essentially more a gastropub than a bar, Euro or otherwise — yesterday, and liked the place quite a bit, thanks to food from chef Chris Greer and gregarious owners Paul Smith and Darren Conner. It’s a great addition to the Grand Central district with a distinctly neighborhood vibe to the clientele, although the place is good enough to become a destination for other St. Pete residents.

Here’s a more expansive look at the new place, and its food, thanks to photographer jamesostrand.com and amateur videographer David Warner:

Queenshead is housed in a '50s era gas station, which means covered seating in the former home of the pumps.

On the Radar: Questa at Club Nautico

Posted by Franki Weddington on Aug. 26, 2009, at 12:00 am

Welcome to On the Radar, where we preview up-and-coming arts events to mark your calendar for. Today’s edition is a new play at Club Nautico, where “all are welcome.”

If you’re looking for a place to avoid Ronda Storms (or maybe run into Charlie Crist), I’d put my money on Gypsy Productions’ new show, Questa – which promises to offer poignant insight on sexuality, spirituality, love and loss. After Paul, the victim of an attempted gay bashing, kills (perhaps accidentally) his attacker, he’s overcome with guilt. He seeks redemption and solace by secretly following his victim’s mother, hoping to ease her pain. (Pictured: Daniel DiPiazza and Daniel Harris in Questa. Photo by Brad Minus.) Through Sept. 13, 7:30 p.m. Fri.-Sat., 3 and 7:30 p.m. Sun., Club Nautico, 4900 66th St., St. Petersburg, $20, nauticostpete.com. – Franki Weddington

Fall Arts Best Bet: Lesley Dill at the Museum of Fine Arts

Posted by Megan Voeller on Aug. 24, 2009, at 7:31 pm

A traveling exhibition organized by Chattanooga’s Hunter Museum of American Art, I Heard A Voice: The Art of Lesley Dill brings nearly 30 of the acclaimed contemporary artist’s works — with an emphasis on sculptural installations — to St. Petersburg. Poetic and psychologically charged, Dill’s constructions often combine fabric and figures (or dress forms) with text to spellbinding effect; works featured in I Heard A Voice respond to poetry by Emily Dickinson, Salvador Espriu and Franz Kafka. Expect to be moved by the artist’s ideas and awed by her craft. Oct. 10-Dec. 27, Museum of Fine Arts, St. Petersburg, 727-896-2667, fine-arts.org.

St. Petersburg Times endorses an anti-evolution, anti-gay candidate for mayor (yes, it’s Bill Foster)

Posted by Wayne Garcia on Aug. 20, 2009, at 3:51 pm

Bill Foster wasted no time in getting the Times recommendation on his website

Bill Foster wasted no time in getting the Times recommendation on his website

The drumbeat that the St. Petersburg Times was considering an endorsement (errr, recommendation, as the Times will always let a candidate know its preferred term) of Bill Foster. On its surface, it seems ludicrous. After all, Foster is the same guy who wrote to the school board a few years back making a strong pitch against teaching Darwinian evolution alone in public schools, hoping it would mix in a bit of “intelligent design.”

But the lack of an emerging alternative to Foster left the Times in the inexplicable position of endorsing an anti-gay rights, anti-evolution mayor of St. Petersburg. More to the point, however, the editorial board chooses a candidate based on who will play ball with it. Which candidate will kiss the ring over on 1st Avenue S? That’s what gets you the recommendation. Disagree with the Times on a core concern at the paper — say, firing Police Chief Chuck Harmon, as Scott Wagman as vowed to do — and you are at a disadvantage, to say the least.

It is OK to disagree with the Times on social conservative issues, as long as you play your cards right, promise not to let those views play out in public policy at City Hall and generally keep your wingy-ness in the closet. After all, the Times’ former editorial chief, Phil Gailey, was totally tight with Rick Baker, who was also a social conservative who refused to recognize gay pride parades or appear in them.

From its recommendation today: Read the rest of this entry »

Best of the Bay 2009: The race for Best Breakfast

Posted by Brian Ries on Aug. 17, 2009, at 3:00 pm

Although Lenny’s (in Clearwater) has dominated this Best of the Bay Readers’ Poll category in recent years, current vote totals peg this race as one of the closest in the Food and Drink category. Lenny’s, Frog Pond, Daily Eats, Nicko’s, Pach’s Place, Pink Flamingo, Pinky’s, Skyway Jack’s, and Village Inn are all neck-and-neck for second place, while national chain First Watch has a commanding (but beatable) lead.

Are Tampa Bay’s morning-food fans going to let a chain (albeit one that started in Florida) win this award? And where is Lenny’s notorious get-out-the-vote campaign?

There’s still two weeks to propel your favorite spot to the top in this hotly contested race (the poll ends Aug. 31).

Vote now, and tell your personal Best Breakfast restaurant to get out the vote!

Running with the Stinky Drinkers: Vampire squirrels, “bonking” and the best spinach ever at Diner 437

(The Stinky Drinkers are a band of merry runners in training for the Women’s Running Magazine Women’s Half-Marathon on November 22nd. These are their stories from the road…)

As the lightning flashed above, beyond and behind downtown St. Pete’s Vinoy Park, four runners sat in a Nissan discussing the science of conductivity. It was a very rainy Friday evening, and our 6:45 call time was being pushed ever backward as the thunder crashed around us.

“You know, if the car was struck by lightning, we would be sitting in a death trap,” Phylis told us. Read the rest of this entry »

STD rates for the bay area

Posted by Shawn Alff on Aug. 11, 2009, at 10:49 am

After debating STD rates this weekend despite the fact that I had no solid evidence, I decided to research the matter. Below is a brief overview of the STD situation in the bay area. Keep in mind that while some of these rates may seem low, they are significantly higher among sexually active demographics.

According to Avert.org, in 2007 the Tampa, St. Petersburg, Clearwater area reported 11,754 AIDS/HIV cases. For every 100,000 people, 17.2 people are living with the disease, or roughly 0.017 % of the total population. Read the rest of this entry »

Rock n’ Weird Thursday: Flexxehawk, Insect Joy and ST37 at New World (video)

Posted by Christopher Nadeau on Aug. 11, 2009, at 10:00 am

“Tampa misses so much cool shit,” my friend Brian Repetto of Insect Joy turns to me and whispers through a cigarette smoke exhale. New World Brewery, Thursday, August 6. One of those nights in Y-bore that turn out really fun because you conned a few friends to hang out and support local music.

“Oh well, I’m glad I made it out, man. This is a really great lineup tonight.” No joke. Insect Joy interestingly spliced record dj-ing and spinning with their usual weird electronic sounds whirling into the atmosphere. Flexxehawk blasted through their spidery, angular, intricate yet minimalist songs with true enthusiasm and purity reserved for bands willing to play their damnist whether the crowd consists of five people or 500.

Huge musical buildups and crescendos with very few but very meaningful words flesh out the Flexxehawk sound into something original, in the vein of Polvo’s kind of math rock mixed with textured vocal harmonies. Historically members and contributors of several local and national acts including Ima, Dumbwaiters, Meringue, etc. All this not even mentioning the touring headliner, ST37.

Out of this world, psychedelic, noisy, punk and weird, references to J.G. Ballard and Twin Peaks, all in one four-piece from Austin …

This weekend’s best bets in Bay area music, August 6-9

Posted by Leilani Polk on Aug. 6, 2009, at 12:03 pm

A quick breakdown of this weekend’s most worthy concerts beginning with Thursday, ’cause that’s when the weekend really starts, right? For a more comprehensive schedule of concerts, check out our Upcoming Events page.

Thursday, August 06
Hot Sun Quartet (pictured) As part of its Side Door Jazz series, the Palladium welcomes Hot Sun Quartet (aka Quarteto Sol Caliente), an instrumental ensemble that performs Latin-flavored jazz with two flamencoguitarists, a percussionist on congas, and a stand-up bassist. Thurs., Aug. 6, 7:30 p.m., Palladium Theater, St. Petersburg, $15.

So. Cal Punk Invasion w/Fear/Agent Orange/D.I./Total Chaos Plastic and fakery incites some pretty strong feelings of disgust and So-Cal is a hotbed of punkified antipathy. This bill spotlights some of the region’s finest. Fear has been rocking LA since 1977 and is credited with helping shape the sound of hardcore punk via thrashtastic, tongue-in-cheek songs about anything from beer to women to beef baloney; you may remember them from 1981’s punk documentary, The Decline of Western Civilization. Agent Orange hails from Orange County and gets props for being the first group to combine punk and surf rock. Fullerton’s D.I. features ex-Social Distortion drummer Casey Royer on vocals while Total Chaos out of Ponoma Valley is fronted by vocalist Rob Chaos, who’s also co-owner of Cali-based punk label SOS Records. The Ugly Side of Fitness

Posted by Caitlin Reagan on Aug. 5, 2009, at 12:00 am

“I hate running,” my friend Carolyn said to me as we sat sipping a glass of Sauvignon Blanc on an idle Tuesday evening. “In fact, I hate people who run. It seems masochistic in so many ways.”

“Maybe it is,” I said. “I run for the after-effects, not the process.”

My name is Caitlin Reagan. I’m a 23-year old Florida native who enjoys running and all things fitness. Please keep in mind that I said I enjoy these activities; therefore I am not a professional trainer nor am I one to pass up a Five Guys burger on a Sunday afternoon to cure my hangover.

I have just recently moved to St. Petersburg to attend graduate school at the University of South Florida and I’ll spend my time away from school discovering the various fitness programs offered in the St. Pete and Tampa area. I plan to give you all a “real person” perspective. In other words, I’ll tell you when I experienced a bout of flatulence and blamed it on the machine during a spin class.

Catch me next week when I discuss my introduction to the Bayshore Drive etiquette and my experience with following these unspoken rules.

The Stinky Drinkers: Meet SD Lisa, a.k.a. “Snake Bite”

Posted by Holley Sinn on Jul. 29, 2009, at 12:02 pm

SD Lisa is heretofore to be known as "Snake Bite"

[Editor's Note: Welcome to the latest chapter in Holley Sinn's running (ha) saga of The Stinky Drinkers, a beer-driven bunch in training for the upcoming Women’s Running Magazine Women’s Half-Marathon coming up this November in downtown St. Pete.]

After our most recent run, SD Phil decided that we needed some rules.  We needed to “name” each other (which we decided should be in reference to beer since that is our carb of choice), come up with appropriate punishments for SDs who miss training sessions and award achievements such as a certain number of miles contributed to the cause.   We are still working on 2 and 3, but I came up with a little SD profile quiz which allows each “stinker” to offer up an option as to his or her beer-related nickname.  Hence, SD Lisa became “Snake Bite.”  Check out the rest of her profile below, and stay tuned for more Stinky Drinker profiles to come, as the founders get a little personal!

St. Petersburg-made movie Loren Cass gets NY Times rave review

Posted by David Warner on Jul. 24, 2009, at 11:22 am

Things are looking up for Loren Cass, the St. Pete-made indie movie previously covered in CL by Alex Pickett and Scott Harrell, and nominated last year by NYC’s IFP Gotham Awards as Best Film Not Playing at a Theater Near You. In today’s New York Times, critic Nathan Lee flat-out raves about the film, which opens today in Manhattan in a single theater. “This sharp, gutsy indie is one of the year’s great discoveries,” says Lee, who goes on to say that writer/director/co-star Chris Fuller is headed for a career of “singular, exquisite promise.”

Which is not to say that the film or the review, headlined “Down and Out (and Disaffected) in St. Petersburg,” are likely to be used as lures for local tourism. (Video after the break) Read the rest of this entry »

Beef Week: The Great Supermarket Steak Tasting

Posted by Brian Ries on Jul. 22, 2009, at 12:00 pm

Choice. Angus. Natural. Organic. Humanely raised. Grass-fed. Prime. Wagyu. Kobe. These days, there are more marketing terms associated with beef than ever before, all of which attempt to separate you from your food budget with promises of better quality or better moral character. And it’s important to know what those terms mean, especially if you’re concerned about greening your meat.

But for most folks, taste is the deciding factor. We might buy prime for the intense marbling, or Kobe and Wagyu for the promise of massaged, beer-drinking cows with intensely tender flesh. Grass-fed beef provides more old-school beef flavor, while organic gives us happier — and possibly more tasty — cows.

We cut through the marketing lingo straight to the meat of the matter by pitting six different, readily available, supermarket steaks against one another: Angus from Sweetbay, choice from Publix, humanely-raised from Publix Greenwise, humanely-raised from Whole Foods, prime and American Wagyu from Mazzaro’s.

Each steak, all NY strip, with one exception, was simply seasoned with the same amount of salt and pepper (by size) and each was grilled to medium-rare (although the thickest gave us a few problems). We then assembled a crack team of CL carnivores — foodies and amateurs — to sample the steaks in a blind tasting and rate the meat.

The results surprised the hell out of us. Find out the winner after the break. Read the rest of this entry »

Not getting a million-dollar bonus this year? Think local stimulus

Posted by Scott Milinder on Jul. 20, 2009, at 1:00 pm

With a helping handout from taxpayers, multinational bankers like Goldman Sachs and JP Morgan have given themselves record bonuses – billions of dollars – in 2009. What? You didn’t get your record, subsidized bonus in 2009?

Despite those giddy Wall Street windfalls and federal stimulus package, the Florida employed rate topped 10.6% in June – 970,000 Floridians “officially” jobless. How many of your family, friends, and neighbors have yet to be lifted out of the economic black hole that seems to be consuming more and more of us?

In the Tampa-St. Petersburg region, we need our own stimulus package – for us. Read the rest of this entry »

Radar: Andy Warhol Family Day Aug. 2 at St. Petersburg’s Museum of Fine Arts

Posted by Lily Reisman on Jul. 17, 2009, at 10:30 am

Iconic pop culture artist Andy Warhol — he of the Campbell’s Soup paintings and silkscreened Marilyns — would have celebrated his 81st birthday Aug. 6. In observance of the occasion, nephew James Warhola joins fans and art appreciators alike at Andy Warhol Family Day for arty activities and a discussion Sunday Aug. 2 on the exhibit Andy Warhol Portfolios: Life and Legends, which ends on August 16. Warhola will sign copies of both his children books, Uncle Andy’s and Uncle Andy’s Cats. In his vibrantly and imaginatively illustrated books, the author fondly recalls visits to his eccentric uncle’s New York townhouse. Throughout the afternoon, children and adults can channel the spirit of Warhol by creating silk screens, stencil images and 3-D sculptures. There will also be a special performance by Mark “the Balloon Guy” Byrne, known for his fanciful balloon sculptures and hats. Restaurant Review: Downtown St. Pete’s Buona Vita

Posted by Brian Ries on Jul. 15, 2009, at 3:30 pm

Buona Vita
3 stars
330 1st Ave. S., St. Petersburg, 727-823-2100.

Buona Vita was born out of tragedy, albeit a tiny one. When Local Coffee + Tea owner Michael Duranko decided to pull out of St. Petersburg, three of the coffeeshop employees took over the place, almost ad hoc. They were on a week-to-week pay schedule with the landlord, with no formal lease. One day, after splurging on two weeks of supplies, the three found that the locks had been changed and they were done with their brief stint as business owners.

The main reason, according to building owner Andy Wallace, was that he wanted something in the space that would better serve the local worker bees in surrounding downtown buildings. There’re already a lot of coffee shops. He had been approached by Allan Galleano, one of the investors in the defunct Desanto restaurant down the street. Galleano was ready to replicate the success he’s had with Italian restaurants in other locations.

Well, there are already a lot of Italian restaurants, too, Read the rest of this entry »

What’s the buzz on the latest issues in the Green Community? Check out what you may have missed this last week:

Celebrating Independence Day or creating environmental disaster? – Kelly Rothwell looks at the littered aftermath of Fourth of July celebrations and wonder why, instead of giving back in celebration of their freedom, people decide to light off fireworks, leaving mass amounts of debris in the water and on the beach.

Local Food: Dinner in, and from, the garden at Gateway Organic Farm – Chef Gui Alinat gives information about Gateway Organic Farm’s next “Dinner in the Garden” event, an incredible local foods experience featuring nine Bay area chefs.

Cool Art Show celebrates 21 years

If it’s summer, it must be time for the Cool Art Show. Any other time of year, the region would be lousy with outdoor art fairs—but from July through September, who wants to brave heat, humidity or the chance of an afternoon thunderstorm?

Twenty-one years ago, Dunedin artist Denis Gaston had a simple idea that turned out to have staying power: round up a group of the Tampa Bay area’s most committed professional artists and add air conditioning.

Restaurant Review: St. Petersburg’s Diner 437

Posted by Brian Ries on Jul. 7, 2009, at 4:16 pm

Diner 437
3.5 stars
437 Central Ave., St. Petersburg, 727-822-4370

I freely admit that I’m a Domenica Macchia stalker. I first encountered this former Redwoods chef at MJ’s Martinis and Tapas last year, when she wowed me and the rest of the Bay area food scene with her interesting and precise take on small-plate fine dining. Then, soon after the place opened, Macchia was fired by the owners of MJ’s. And yes, I feel a little satisfaction that the jazz lounge/restaurant is now on a possibly permanent “hiatus” while it looks for a new location.

After a few months of looking, and some concern over her mortgage, Macchia hooked up with Dan Soronen — former owner of the Old Northeast Tavern — and concocted a gastropub menu for his soon-to-open Shackleton’s Folly in south St. Pete. “Soon” became months, and finally Macchia left to find another new opportunity. Fortuitously, Greg Pugh — owner of Ringside Cafe — was interested in opening a new place. Fast. Diner 437 started slinging hash within a couple of weeks.

I love Macchia for her food, sure, but also for how she lays everything on the table when you talk to her, whether it’s for a CL interview or just gabbing with strangers the counter at her new restaurant during a slow moment. She’s frets — about herself, about her food, about the past and the future — and she’s unabashedly candid about herself and her path to Diner 437. You can read all about it on CL’s food blog.

The problem with love — familial and otherwise — is that it comes with expectations. Read the rest of this entry »

Rep. Rick Kriseman’s new green home (video)

Posted by Rick Kriseman on Jul. 7, 2009, at 2:45 pm

As was widely reported, my family and I lost our home to a fire last year. In an effort to turn a bad situation into something really positive, to be environmentally conscious and energy efficient, and to save money and lead by example, we built our new home to be LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified by the U.S. Green Building Council. Many friends, colleagues, and constituents have inquired about my family’s new home and the green features, and so my staff and I decided to grab the video camera and record a tour to share with those interested.

The Top 100 sports towns in America

Posted by Eric Snider on Jul. 7, 2009, at 11:23 am

Men’s Health magazine has a feature called MetroGrades, where the Top 100 cities are ranked in various categories: Noisiest, Best For Men 2009, etc. They use empirical data to draw their conclusions, although at best the science is inexact. Still, it makes for good discussion fodder.

The July/August issue’s MetroGrade is “America’s Top Sports Towns.”

Results in a bit, but first the criteria:

• How many people attend baseball, basketball and football games (college and pro) and those showing up at high school sporting events.

• NASCAR attendance and who’s catching their sports on TV and the radio (source: SimplyMap).

• The number of people vying for tickets to any sport, who is buying the most team apparel, and how many people call themselves “foam-finger-waving fanatics” (source: Scarborough Sports Marketing).

Here are the Top 10: Read the rest of this entry »

KK – So Marina, ARTPool gallery is gearing up for another TRA’shion Fashion Show.  If you’ve never been to TRA’shion Fashion, what is it and what’s it like?

Monsters of Mock: Three tribute bands stir up a Jannus Landing crowd

Posted by Michael Murillo on Jun. 23, 2009, at 12:26 pm

The crowd cheers as a tattooed man with shaggy hair and a British accent belts out Ozzy Osbourne and Black Sabbath tunes. An hour later, a blonde singer tears through a set of Motley Crue classics while his bandmates pound their instruments into submission. An hour after that, a grown man in a schoolboy outfit duck-walks across the stage and his cohort growls from under his cap while AC/DC riffs blast through the speakers.

Is this a dream team concert lineup of rock ‘n’ roll legends? Not quite, but the crowd is enthusiastic and it sounds pretty close to the real thing. In fact, the only part that’s completely unrealistic is the price, since admission to see all the bands ($10) cost less than parking at major rock concerts.

On June 20, three tribute acts performed at Jannus Landing at the Monsters of Mock show while fans sang along to the familiar sights and sounds. It’s not the real thing, but according to Martyn Jenkins, frontman for AC/DC tribute act Highway to Hell (and the evening’s headliners), the next best thing is pretty satisfying in its own right Read the rest of this entry »
