The Green Community week in review: USF’s School of Global Sustainability conference, climate change vs. weather, Clearwater mayor weighs in on the light rail, and more

Posted by Katie M. on Feb. 14, 2010, at 4:32 pm

What’s the buzz on the latest issues in the Green Community? Check out what you may have missed this last week:

Easy energy saving ideas (that are great for your wallet too) – When we take a look around the home it is really easy to see where some money saving and Earth friendly changes can occur.

Sweetwater Organic Community Farm: A great spot for a ‘green’ date – Sweetwater Organic Farm’s Sunday market brings a community together to enjoy the farm, the food, the music, and each other. Community support, especially through volunteering, makes it all happen. Indulging in either of these activities for a date nourishes this incredibly community and gives you and your date an unparalleled green experience.

A jobless recovery + 10 million unemployed = A wake up call and an opportunity – With 10 million folks unemployed and a ‘jobless recovery’ expected, we are confronted with the need to create new solutions. The good news? That’s our strong suit – the US is always innovating and we’re can do it again. Here’s how.

Raising the next ecoist – The sort of progress being made today can only continue if parents raise children who are ecologically-minded too.

Making music tours more sustainable: Reverb and the Green Music Group – The environmental impact of touring shows and music festivals can be huge- tons of fuel, resources and waste. But one musician decided to make a difference by creating an organization that makes tours more eco-friendly.

Welcome ACTgreen Partnership, Tampa Bay’s newest ‘green’ non-profit, at their kickoff event in Ybor – On February 17th, at Florida Business Interiors in Ybor City, ACTgreen Partnership, a new non-profit organization, will announce themselves and their services to the Tampa Bay community at a kick off event.

Top 10 ridiculously awesome Christmas songs you won’t hear on the radio (with video)

Posted by Kristina Welch on Dec. 7, 2009, at 2:18 pm

Brandon Santa

I truly love Christmas. I’m one of those cookie-baking, car-wreath sportin’, Martha Stewart Living-magazine totin’ freaks that can’t get enough of this holiday. My favorite aspect is, of course, the music that defines the spirit of Christmas. But man cannot live on the holiday offerings of Magic 94.9 FM radio alone, because alas, the station tends to play the same songs year after year. I’ve compiled a list of 10 songs that I think everyone ought to hear this holiday season — some are original masterpieces by contemporary artists, and others are covers of classics that do our favorite Christmas carols justice. Enjoy, and if you feel so inclined, add input on some of your favorite holiday jams in the comments section below.

1. “Don’t Shoot Me Santa,” The Killers, Don’t Shoot Me Santa (2007). I’ve had a very good year, which means I’ve been a little naughty along the way. The Killers recorded the ultimate song for those of us on Santa’s naughty list to benefit the Global Fund’s (RED). It’s slightly on the twisted side, with lead singer Brandon Flowers (pictured above) confessing, “Oh, Santa, I’ve been killing just for fun.” Santa, who knows if you’ve been bad or good, replies to Flowers, “Well, the party’s over kid, because I’ve got a bullet in my gun.” The video has a hilarious narrative, and highlights one of the true messages of Christmas — friendship, even in the face of an ax-wielding Santa Claus.

2. “Christmas Time Again,” Extreme, A Very Special Christmas 2 (1992). This was one of my favorite Christmas songs as a kid. While it clearly displays Extreme’s affinity for rock, the ballad is full of beautiful harmonies and lyrics suggesting that Christmastime “comes and goes, so let’s pretend that it’ll last all year.” What a rockin’ idea. Stephen Colbert on the war against toilet paper: “World War 3-Ply”

Posted by Katie M. on Oct. 2, 2009, at 12:36 pm

toilet-paper noCheck out this hilarious clip from the Colbert Report where Stephen sticks it to environmentalists who are against 3-ply toilet paper. It highlights the environmentalists main arguments, such as comparing what quilted toilet paper is to the paper industry what a Hummer is to the car industry.

According to Colbert, the “best, fluffiest toilet paper is made from old wood,” (meaning it’s made from trees that are decades or even centuries old) and environmentalists are taking action against the production of this commodity.

Colbert threatens to start wiping with a spotted owl if the environmentalists take away his precious plush toilet paper.

See the video after the jump.

The Short List: Can anyone pass this stimulus package?

Posted by Joe Bardi on Feb. 6, 2009, at 6:00 am

What better way to end this week than with a Colbert clip where Stephen sends up the Christian Bale meltdown with a little help from fellow Stephen, Steve Martin? Have a good weekend!

  • Obama shoots back at the Republicans; says time is of the essence on stimulus bill.
  • But can they pass it today?
