Fighting global warming could reduce disease and save millions of lives (as well as the planet)

Posted by Katie M. on Nov. 25, 2009, at 1:00 pm

global_warming_smAccording to recent research published in the British medical journal The Lancet Wednesday (November 25), cutting greenhouse pollutants could not only save the planet from drastic climate change but could also greatly affect our health in a positive way. The studies linking climate change and health show that reducing carbon dioxide emissions from our atmosphere could greatly reduce preventable deaths from heart and lung diseases.

The studies performed looked at confronting climate change in four areas: electricity generation, household energy use, transportation, and food and agriculture. Each study looks at both high- and low-income nations and the health implications of reducing greenhouse gases from fossil fuels. Major amounts of carbon emissions are due to both transportation and from the burning of solid fuel in the household stoves of poorer countries (that burn dung, charcoal, wood and other polluting fuels) to cook and heat their homes. Carbon emissions cause air pollution because it increases ground-level ozone, thus accumulating fine particulate matter that could lead to lung disease.

The Walking Dead: Why You Should “Fear the Hunters”

Posted by Jamie Turner on Oct. 21, 2009, at 1:01 pm

The Walking Dead, Robert Kirkman and Charlie Adlard’s incredible tale of ongoing survival horror, is THE most consistently great comic book series on shelves today. It’s so good, that it’s being developed into a television series for AMC (the same folks airing the critically acclaimed drama Mad Men). Image Comics has been publishing The Walking Dead for almost six years now and there hasn’t been a bad issue yet. Trust me, I have them all. This wealth of a back-story should give AMC plenty of fantastic material to work with when the show finally gets started next year.

Connecting longevity to a green lifestyle

Posted by lindataylor on Sep. 23, 2009, at 8:30 am

eco_friendly_workoutgearSince 1996 my company, It’s Our Nature has had a vision of connecting our wellness to the health of the earth. Recently, Prevention Magazine provided a list of Surprising Signs That You’ll Probably Live Longer that correlate to a green lifestyle.

Here are some of the connections from Planet Green:

You walk to stay fit. Fit people–defined as those who walk for about 30 minutes a day–are more likely to live longer than those who walk less, regardless of how much body fat they have, according to a recent study of 2,603 men and women.

Green It: Walking for a purpose- The best way to stay fit is to include walking in your everyday life as a way to get from A to B. Park the car and instead choose to walk to the store or if you use public transportation, walk to the bus or train station. That’s why Europeans are so enviously thin; they walk to get somewhere not just to stay fit. Save fossil fuels and win the battle of the bulge by hitting the pavement.

Tips to improve gas mileage (and save some green)

Posted by Jason Green on Aug. 4, 2009, at 2:00 pm

Do you have a lead foot or drive an inefficient automobile?  Here are a few simple tips to improve gas mileage and save a bunch of green!

The Issue: Poor gas mileage!

The Larger Issue:
-Oil is a non-renewable resource, and while there is debate as to how long it will last, we will eventually have to find new ways to fuel vehicles.

-Poor fuel economy increases our dependence on foreign oil.

-Burning gasoline and diesel contributes to air pollution and global warming.

-You will pay an extra $200 to $1500 each year by driving inefficient vehicles. This can cost many thousands of dollars over a vehicle’s lifetime.

-Oil spills from oil refining and oil transporting destroy ecosystems and pollute water.
