Women claim Marvel comics in 2010

Posted by Ryan Jent on Nov. 18, 2009, at 11:15 am

When you think about Marvel Comics, chances are you think about Spider-Man. The Hulk. Captain America. Iron Man. The X-Men.

But there have been just as many X-Women as -Men.

More of Marvel’s characters have called themselves Spider-Woman than Spider-Man, including the figurehead of last summer’s mega-crossover Secret Invasion.

SheHulkShe-Hulk was Marvel Chairman Emeritus Stan Lee’s final Marvel creation. A simple origin, but a lasting character.

Even so, Jennifer Walters — the cousin of Bruce Banner, The Hulk, has yet to smash her way to the big screen, in either an Ang Lee-adapted mess or much-deserved, subsequent relaunch several years later. And the only Spider-Woman your average person may recognize is a fat kid dressed as Spider-Man for Halloween. (I’m allowed to say that. It was me. They weren’t boobs, they were buds.)

Wolverine became the first X-Men spin-off, beating Phoenix, Rogue or Storm. (Sorry, Halle.) And the only Marvel film with a female at the lead, Elektra, managed to do worse than its predecessor, Daredevil.

Why? Because comic books, and therefore their mainstream adaptations, tend to lend themselves more to the Y chromosome than the X.

But X has always been a key component to the success of Marvel Comics — and in March, coinciding with National Women’s History Month, the company will begin a year-long celebration of the women both on and behind its pages with Marvel Women. Read the rest of this entry »

5 turn-offs for men

Posted by Emmalee on Oct. 26, 2009, at 10:30 am

groomingAfter some serious thought and input from a few close male friends, I formed this list of five common turn-offs for men. Disclaimer: this is not the TOP five, but merely five things women do or possess that are complete and utter turn-offs. I also suggest that female readers ask your well-kept and clean male friends their opinion on if you can check yourself off this list.

Can men and women just be friends?

Posted by Emmalee on Oct. 19, 2009, at 10:30 am

Just friendsAt my former job I met a man I’ll call Scott. Scott came in multiple times to specifically seek my advice and stayed roughly an hour each visit. We talked about each others’ lives, specifically love and sex; I like to think these subjects are my forte and I talk about them with most everyone. The majority of the the conversations were about his ex and recent dates he went on. Once, when it was time for Scott to leave, I was on my way out for lunch. As we walked out together I said, “You know I don’t have that many good guy friends that I can chat with around here. We should be friends.”

He shot me a curious smile and gave me his phone number. We occasionally shot each other a text about our bad experiences with Verizon and the like, but then things went in a direction I wasn’t expecting.

Via text he asked, “What do you want?”

I laughed and said, “Well nothing. You know I’m not single, right?” I figured Facebook would have given him that answer.

“I’m not looking for anything serious,” he wrote. “You’re a cool girl and all, but I’m not looking for anything ’serious’ with you.”

I could not believe what I was hearing. I legitimately thought he wanted to be my friend, but in the end he just wanted to fuck. I ended communication with Scott immediately and called a close male friend to vent.

kiss as a greetingAs naive as it sounds, I have never been asked out-right to be a friend-with-benefits. Don’t get me wrong, I see nothing wrong with that, but I honestly did not think he had an ulterior motive. I was very, very wrong.

This got me thinking of other scenarios with male “friends.” Two of my close male friends have told me that we couldn’t be friends or talk as much, because of trust issues with their partners. When did I cross a line where it’s not OK to be friends with males, especially if they are in a relationships?

I have always had more male than female friends and am confused as to why this relationship seems taboo to many. I can understand how a girlfriend would get jealous if I had slept with or dated these male friends, but otherwise I’m lost. The worst part is that I have been friends with one guy long before he met his recent beau, so why should I have to give him up as a friend?

My boyfriend and I have an exponential amount of trust for one another and I think this is what is lacking in couples that “forbid” their partner to have friends of the opposite sex. I feel that if you do not have friends of the opposite sex for fear of what will happen in your own relationship, you are missing out on some major life experiences, and I don’t mean sexually.

Why am I just now learning this unspoken rule? After some thought I think I have found a solution: the friend needs to meet the partner in order to convey a sense of trust and to prove that he/she has no ulterior motives. But is the rule only applicable to people in marriages or relationships? What about single people? I need some perspective on this one? What do you all think?

What noises are coming from your bedroom?

Posted by Rebecca Ammon on Oct. 9, 2009, at 10:30 am

1844127964_fc2b82c37a[1]I’ve been in a few bedrooms over the years and I’m always amazed by the sounds that come out of overly excited sex partners, either with me or in the bed next to me.  Everyone responds differently to sex, orgasm, and excitement, but  how much of that noise is genuine and how much is put on for show?

I am not an overly noisy person during sex.  I don’t really talk loudly about the dirty deeds I want you to do to me.  You could say I am more of a sexual whisperer.  If you were having sex with me you might experience my hot breath in your ear, whispering whatever comes to mind in my sexiest voice.  Although, sometimes I find myself being  just silly in bed and clowning around during sex.  Unfortunately this might be at your expense — sorry.  But, if you’re lucky enough to hear me raise my voice a bit, grind out a few words in a deep tone, you are probably hurting me, and well, at the moment it might be a good thing. How to milk your man’s prostate

Posted by Peaches on Sep. 22, 2009, at 8:54 pm

handsThe internal prostate massage is one of the most sexually stimulating practices you can do for a man, and it’s healthy.  I started milking the prostate a few years ago after reading some literature on the subject.  It was more than difficult getting my then 46-year-old husband to try it, but once I did he enjoyed it.

Milking keeps the blood moving and releases seminal fluid.  Some men aren’t into having anything in their anus, so a perineum massage can also be stimulating as well. The perineum is a small, smooth patch of skin located between the testicles and the anus. By pressing down on this area, not too hard, this will indirectly stimulate the prostate.  I usually use this technique when I’m masturbating my husband.  Again, I enjoy using ky-warming gel and it drives him nuts.  Read the rest of this entry »

8 tips for dating younger women

Posted by Miss Ginger Millay on Sep. 14, 2009, at 3:00 pm

I’ve spoken with many women about their experiences dating older men. After repeatedly hearing the samelolita1 pros and cons, I decided to compile a list of tips for men who would like to successfully date younger women. You’re welcome.

1) Don’t make a big deal about the age difference. You can’t completely avoid the discussion, but unless she specifically finds it exciting (some do), don’t bring it up often. Avoid making her feel like a fetish item. Instead, let her know that you really like her and she just happens to be younger. Read the rest of this entry »

The top 10 hottest women in comics

Posted by Ryan Jent on Sep. 1, 2009, at 8:24 pm

The number of male celebrities who’ve portrayed comic book characters on film is impressive, but the list of actresses to translate the women of comics for the big screen definitely, well, racks up.

Halle Berry brought a loosely adapted Catwoman to the silver screen, though more acclaimed was her version of element- and director-controlling Storm in the three X-Men films. (Incidentally, I hear Bryan Singer still cries himself to sleep after years of receiving threatening letters from her Oscar.)

Famke Janssen fired up the screen as Jean Grey in the same amount of films, coupled with the likes of hotter-than-ever Anna Paquin and Rebecca Romjin as Rogue and Mystique, respectively.

Michelle Pfeiffer’s take on Catwoman in Batman Returns is as timeless as she is, Angelina Jolie was Wanted, and Gwyneth Paltrow Peppered up Iron Man as a comic character with the ultimate weapon: heart.

Iron Man 2 will see Scarlet Johansson as spy extraordinare Black Widow, Natalie Portman has joined the ranks of Thor, and outspoken comics fan Megan Fox is rumored to have signed on to play a different comic heroine every day. One thing is certain: the list of beautiful actresses to portray comicdom’s hottest women will continue to expand faster than Kirstie Alley’s waistline.

You’ve seen the men, so without further ado — take a look at mainstream comics Top 10 Hottest Women: Read the rest of this entry »

My so-called pregnancy: an abortion story (part one)

Posted by Miss Ginger Millay on Aug. 31, 2009, at 11:53 pm

Most of what is said about abortion comes from politicians and religious leaders, but it’s everyday women who actually have to make the difficult decision of what to do about an unplanned pregnancy – women like me.

1 in 3 American women will have an abortion in her lifetime. This is a huge number which likely includes many women close to you, yet few ever talk about their experiences. Where are the personal accounts?

Even with the anonymity of the internet, these stories are hard to find. Women facing unplanned pregnancies have a right to know about the experiences of other women and why some chose to terminate their pregnancy. Read the rest of this entry »

WTF?! The hotties who (inexplicably) date Marilyn Manson

Posted by Miss Ginger Millay on Aug. 30, 2009, at 11:29 am

Love or hate Marilyn Manson, you have to respect his impeccable taste in women. Sure, fortune and fame can get you anything (or anyone), but I’m still baffled by the homely Manson’s ability to pick up some of the most stunning up n’ coming starlets of the day. Here are a few of his conquests:

Rose McGowan

Actress Rose McGowan is best known for her roles in movies, such as Jawbreaker and Grindhouse, and the television show, Charmed.

She and Manson dated for 3.5 years in the late ’90s and early ’00s, during which time McGowan made headlines appearing at an awards ceremony wearing only a loose net over the front of her body and a cascade of strings across her backside (and oh, what a backside!).

After a two-year engagement, McGowan ended the relationship and Manson moved on to… Read the rest of this entry »

Sex Bites: your week in sex and love news

Posted by W.J. L'amour on Aug. 16, 2009, at 2:17 pm

I’m a firm believer that Sundays should be no more academic than the New York Times Magazine. Enjoy your day of rest with this steamy pile of sex news.

Watch yourself, Grandpa: A new study to be published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism found that sex hormone levels affect the risk of broken bones in older men. The study measured the sex hormone levels of 1,436 men aged 65 and older for a period of five years. Researchers found that men with low levels of estradiol*, or high levels of sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG)^, were more likely to suffer ostoporotic fractures. Men with low levels of testosterone and estradiol combined with high levels of SHBG were three times as likely to break a bone than men with average sex hormones. Read the rest of this entry »

Snipped or unsnipped: the circumcision debate

Posted by Shawn Alff on Jul. 22, 2009, at 4:42 pm

In a recent study of 445 Ugandan women whose sexual partners were recently circumcised, 40% reported improvements in their sex lives, 57% claimed no change, and 3% said their sex lives suffered. The reasons these women gave for how sex improved may surprise you: better hygiene, it took longer for men to climax, and their partners wanted more frequent sex. Read the rest of this entry »

Fetish vs. fantasy (NSFW)

Posted by Emmalee on Jul. 20, 2009, at 9:26 am

Some like to be dominated. Others are turned on by feet. Fantasies and fetishes are distinctly different, but a fantasy can include a fetish. After writing the article, Sex Outside the Box, I starting thinking about fantasies and fetishes. A sexual fantasy begins as a thought and is an event or act that isn’t normally played out in the bedroom. If you’re lucky you may be able to act upon this fantasy. A fetish can be an object or an act that isn’t considered outright sexual in nature. Either way a person can’t get off without incorporating their fetish. Read the rest of this entry »

Man manual: the body blunder

Posted by InnocentUWish on Jun. 30, 2009, at 7:08 pm

For those who don’t know me, my head is always in the gutter; hell I rent out the sewer! I’m blunt when it comes to sex and relationships! Lately I’ve been dealing with all my girlfriends’ drama and issues, but I’ve become aggravated when they don’t listen. To save me many hours spent half-listening to girlfriends cry into their phones over ruined relationships while shoveling comfort foods, I’ve decided to catalog my dating advice for you to flip through at will. Think of it as an encyclopedia for dealing with and dating men.

For my first entree I tackle the problem of asking your man stupid questions about your appearance.

Reasons why you didn’t get that second date: rules to date (or not) by

Posted by Camile on Jun. 13, 2009, at 8:00 am

You thought the first date went off well, but for some reason you are now suffering “Mr. Telephone Man” syndrome.

Below are ten reasons (five general, and five of my own) that might explain why you are striking out. Note: These are meant to apply to men and women because we’re all guilty of striking out.

5) You’re a poser and it shows.
Pretending to like something in order to hook up with someone almost never works. Somewhere in the conversation, you will tell that jazz lover you’ve been hitting up, how much you love Cab Calloways’s sax playing. The other person will respond by either rolling their eyes and walking away or outright calling you a lying prat. Not to mention, pretending to like something when you actually hate it means you will be spending hours doing something you dislike. Better to be up front about not liking whatever it is that s/he is into and focus on what you are into. If it turns out that the attraction does not go beyond physical, you have two options: a) work with it, or, b) move on.

Moral: Be yourself and find someone who likes you as a person. Read the rest of this entry »

From Twilight to True Blood: What is it about Vampires that makes ladies’ hearts pound?

Posted by Rabid Nick Refer on May. 26, 2009, at 11:34 am

What is it about immortal blood sucking broodaholics that makes women swoon?  Is it the danger?  Is it the biting?  Because trust me girls, I can nibble your neck and I’ve been known to walk fast with a pair of scissors in my hand.  Or perhaps it’s something unattainable to us, the meek mortal man.

Vampire stories such as Twilight and True Blood are currently the hottest things on the market from books, to film/TV and even sex toys.  What gives?  The thought of having my blood removed from the warmth of my veins does not get me wild in the pants.  But the ladies, the ladies do love their undead bad boys.  They want to be taken to the edge and peer over the side.  It drives their juices and makes their heart feel a new sense of life.  The thought that you could be laying with your lover and in the throes of passion and he could take your life must be a mighty intoxicant.  But give me a shot of tequila over a chalice of blood any day.

Edward Cullen does have quite a few more desirable qualities than say Count Dracula.  For one he doesn’t consistently look like he’s heading to the opera.  He’s a moody, anti-social, and more Abercrombie than Hot Topic.  And you’d being lying if you couldn’t admit those eyes are DREAMY. H1N1? Swine flu? Is the media’s new menace keeping you from squealing in the bedroom? (Poll)

Posted by Rabid Nick Refer on May. 6, 2009, at 8:40 pm

A "Mexican" Kiss

A "Mexican Kiss"

The media is having a field day hypnotizing Americans with fear over the impending Porkacolypse, but is this newest incarnation of doomsday  actually keeping us from getting laid?

I realize everyone is tired of the Swine Flu. All my friends roll their eyes at its mere mention. I get it. But trends around my college campus are beginning to shift, and I’m starting to worry. I mean the slutty chicks are still willing to lay any wookie, but the marginally wild women who drink apple martinis on barstools while their thongs creep out the top of their business skirts are becoming even more inaccessible. They are sitting on barstools with their legs crossed, like ladies for God’s sake. My boy Shawn who NEVER has a problem landing a lady had two drinks he bought for prospective partners sent back with a “No thanks.” The girls are turning down free booze now? He’s lucky I like girly drinks.

Why does sex talk intimidate potential fuck buddies?

Posted by Ginger Ale on Apr. 6, 2009, at 9:05 pm

It’s Friday Night and I’m at home waiting on my date. Since I’m still waiting, I assume I scared him off.  This has been happening more often. Maybe I’m getting too aggressive.  I’ve been assertive with men my entire life.  I was under the impression that society had changed and it was ok for a woman to talk about sex without being a whore.   Besides, he started it. He contacted me online and since I’m a flirt, I couldn’t resist.

His online photos were so fucking hot my eyes burned just looking at them.  Clearly defined upper body with dark hair and light eyes.  I’ll do dirty, nasty things for a man with dark hair and light eyes. I was excited from the start.  I wanted to see where this would go.  Hopefully straight to the bedroom. This is how it started, straight from the internet chat box:

“Hi there sexy, love your smile and pics,” he wrote. Read the rest of this entry »
