Tuesday, October 27: Snookers Grill
Champagne and Sushi. It seems like the words I’m reading are too good to be true, but unless my eyes are deceiving me, it appears that Snookers is offering unlimited — yes, like, all you could ever imbibe — champagne and chef-selected sushi. Those just happen to be two of my favorite delicacies, and though I admit to never having tried them together, it sounds like a damn fine idea. $15. 7-9 p.m., 606 N. Pinellas Ave., Tarpon Springs. (727-937-6665)

Wednesday, October 28: Splash! An Ocean Grill
Kennedy White House Wine Dinner. It’s no run-of-the-mill wine pairing, that’s for sure. Sommelier and foodie Perry Thomas dares you to test your tastebuds against the personal favorites of the Kennedy family, with a menu that includes: Clams Jaqueline, Little Neck clams stuffed with  pernod spinach and watercress, topped with asiago bread crumbs and oven roasted, paired with Chateau La Freynelle, Bordeaux Blanc, 2007; Homard en Bellevue, rock lobster medallions stuffed with a shrimp mousse and asparagus, served in a chilled lobster consommé with caviar-stuffed new potatoes, paired with Jadot, Pouilly Fuisse, 2007; Spring Lamb a la Broche aux Primeurs, lambsickles pan seared and glazed with a rosemary and garlic mint aspic, served with pan roasted thumbelina carrots and truffled fingerling pommes frites, paired with Chateau Bellevue Peycharneau, Bordeaux Superior, 2005; Salade Mimosa, fresh baby spring greens tossed in a light champagne-horseradish vinaigrette, garnished with sliced avocado, lump crab and chopped egg yolk, paired with Piper-Heidsieck 1785 Champagne; and Strawberries Romanoff, Plant City strawberries macerated in Grand Marnier topped with crème anglaise and chantilly cream, paired with Chateau Laribotte, Sauternes, 2003. Reservations required. $90. 7 p.m., 3973 Van Dyke Road, Tampa (813-269-8611)

Best New Restaurant: Z Grille

Posted by Brian Ries on Sep. 19, 2009, at 3:36 pm

z grilleAlthough chef/owner Zack Gross has dished up fine food at Z Grille for years, this year saw such a quantum shift in the downtown St. Pete restaurant that it deserves rookie status. First, a move down the street and around the corner to beautiful digs in the Signature Place building, where artful interpretations of Gross’ love for tattoos and skateboards give the place a casual but refined vibe. Then, the food, which has morphed from Baja-Mex to imaginative, modern American cuisine that ranges from elegant to playful. With those changes, Z Grille has become the destination for foodies in the crowded St. Pete restaurant market.

104 Second St. St. Petersburg, 727-822-9600 or zgrille.net.

Best of the Bay Readers’ Poll: The race for Best New Restaurant

Posted by Brian Ries on Aug. 27, 2009, at 12:24 pm

This is the time when all the spectacular new restaurants that have opened in the past year can shine and all of Tampa Bay can snub our collective noses at the poor economy. But only one worthy spot can win, and the race is close.

Two St. Pete spots — Diner 437 and Queenshead Eurobar — are in the lead, but there’s still plenty of time to shift victory in this close race to another restaurant. Time to mobilize and vote!

Is your favorite spot in the running? Here’s are the leaders in the race so far, with their current tallies: Read the rest of this entry »

Our annual Best of the Bay Readers’ Poll is your chance to recognize your favorite knife-wielding madman (or madwoman)!

Right now, the race is tight. Here’s a rundown on the top vote-getters so far: Read the rest of this entry »

Zack Gross (Z Grille), Derek Barnes (Derek’s), Bern’s don’t make Beard Awards finals

Posted by Brian Ries on Mar. 23, 2009, at 3:00 pm

Breaking news from the James Beard Foundation awards committee: Tampa’s Zack Gross (of Z Grille) and Sarasota’s Derek Barnes (of Derek’s Culinary Casual) made the semifinals list for Best Chef: South a month ago, and Bern’s made the short list for Outstanding Restaurant, but none of them made the cut to the finalists list announced today.

I profiled Barnes in CL Sarasota a couple of weeks ago, and reviewed Z Grille a couple of months ago; both are well worth a visit, but the Beard Foundation has always tended towards honoring chefs with name recognition, usually from bigger markets. Still, as hackneyed as it sounds, it’s a big step for Barnes, Gross, Bern’s and Florida’s Gulf Coast just for them to be nominated. Congrats again, guys.

Check out the full list of finalists after the break:

Bern’s, Zack Gross of Z Grille, and Derek Barnes of Derek’s Culinary Casual make semifinals for Beard Awards

Posted by Brian Ries on Feb. 13, 2009, at 1:04 pm

Traditionally, smaller cities and less atypical chefs rarely make the Beard Foundation’s short list for their annual restaurant awards. This year, that seems to have abated a bit.

Bern’s Steak House has made the grade for Outstanding Restaurant — a national award that includes mostly established, big name restaurants. But they also picked Zack Gross of Z Grille as one of twenty people on the shortlist for Best Chef: South Region. A beard judge must have sampled his Dr. Pepper ribs or Butterfinger egg roll.

Sarasota also has a name on the list — Derek Barnes of Derek’s Culinary Casual. It’s a well-deserved honor for a chef who’s blazed a trail towards more innovating cooking in the area for years.

Congrats to all of them.

The new Z-Grille opens, while Zurritos keeps the old flava’

Posted by Brian Ries on Nov. 7, 2008, at 12:03 pm

This morning I posted a review of Zurritos — the Zack Gross outlet that used to be Z Grille. Perfect timing, since the new Z Grille (727-822-9600) is officially opening today. Gross moved down the street to the new Signature Tower development at 104 2nd St. S, giving his casual and relaxed restaurant a more upscale vibe, edgy decor and a slightly enhanced menu. It’s still the same Baja-Mex and Cali fusion that made me give his ribeye Best Steak a couple of years back.

Check out the new Z Grille and let me know what you think.
