What you can do to improve economic opportunities for the young
February 26th, 2008 by Web Editor in Save our young, What you can doA first step: Various chambers of commerce have instituted organizations to create a more hospitable environment for young professionals. But there’s no quick marketing fix to the youth drain problem. A good start would be for local governments and businesses to recommit themselves to funding the arts, which would provide a hipper Tampa Bay and keep creatives here instead of sending them fleeing to New York or Austin. Plus, the arts have a tremendous economic impact, one that generally stays in the area.

As a promoter & musician active in the Tampa Bay music scene, we also need to stop the ABOLITION of all-ages concerts. These kids need art & they need music. If we allow them to grow up without it, we’ll get mindless medicated consumers trained on video games - or even soldiers.

Which cities ban all-ages shows? I know from Joran that Seminole recently looked at such a ban.

If I can also chime in here, when people support the arts it’s not always enough to write checks to larger institutions like TBPAC or TFO. Please, do not get me wrong, those organizations are VITAL to the area and extremely important, but there are also the “little guys” like Moving Current or my own Jobsite Theater. Even a $50 or $100 gift to one of these much smaller arts organizations makes a very big impact. I’m not suggesting abandoning these strong columns of the arts in our community, but to just share the love. Most of the smaller companies employ a much larger percentage of younger people and taking care of them now stops them from leaving town for greener fields.
