Contradictory quotations: Torture and ‘24′

February 27, 2007 at 3:15 pm by Curt Holman in Randomly Noted

Context: The violent action TV series “24″ has taken fire from several corners (including human rights groups, a dean at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and military and FBI interrogators) for its frequent, graphic and allegedly unrealistic depictions of torture.

Quotation 1, from an Entertainment Weekly article “Getting drilled: ‘24′ takes heat for its gratuitous torture scenes:”

“The producers have announced plans to cut back on torture this season. … Executive producer Howard Gordon has recently said that graphic scenes like Abu Fayed drilling through the shoulder of CTU’s Morris O’Brian have become ‘a little trite’ and ‘tiring.’”

Quotation 2, from the sneak peek for the upcoming March 5 episode of “24″ (airing at 9 p.m. Monday on Fox):

“Tell me what I want to know or I’ll start cutting off your fingers one-by-one!” says Kiefer Sutherland’s Jack Bauer, waving what appears to be a metal finger-cutter-offer.
