The blue ghost has eaten the Pacman

April 10, 2007 at 5:20 pm by Jake Gantz in News, Sports

Excuse my favorite arcade-game reference; this is no childish matter.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell came down hard on CB Pacman Jones today when it was announced the Tennessee Titans player would be suspended for the entire 2007 NFL season.

About the suspension, Goodell had this to say: “We must protect the integrity of the NFL. The highest standards of conduct must be met by everyone in the NFL because it is a privilege to represent the NFL, not a right. These players, and all members of our league, have to make the right choices and decisions in their conduct on a consistent basis.”

Georgia-born Jones attended Westlake High School in Atlanta and had a great on-field season in 2006 for the Titans, nabbing a career-best four interceptions while tying for the league lead in punt returns for touchdowns with three. But it was his off-field moves that had everybody talking.

Jones most recently got into a heap of trouble with his involvement in a February strip-club brawl and shooting in Las Vegas that left three people injured. Jones’ bag of $81,000 was stolen from him, which led to the altercation. Jones apparently had been “making it rain” with friend and rapper Nelly. Atlanta native Jermaine Dupri was also in attendance that infamous night.

Jones joins an elite cast of characters who have been handed yearlong suspensions by the league’s front office.

It’s sad that this action had to take place, but Jones’ laundry list of arrests and conduct problems led to Goodell’s decision. In what was an arrest-plagued year for the NFL and its players, a precedent had to be set stating this behavior would not be tolerated by the league any longer. Fellow NFL player WR Chris Henry, the troubled Cincinnati Bengal who was all too often in the news this past year, was suspended by Goodell for eight games as well.
