Atlanta blogs today: Kai, Pye and Guys

May 23, 2007 at 9:43 am by Andisheh Nouraee in Blogroll

I think the ATL cops must have some serious problems down there. They needn’t bust in on innocent old grandmas. Just go over to the Mayor’s house……

Aging Hipster remarks on the front-page story in today’s AJC about a federal investigation of whether Mayor Shirley Franklin’s daughter, Kai Franklin, laundered money for her convicted drug dealer ex-husband, Tremayne Graham.

Two weeks ago, CL’s Mara Shalhoup wrote about the investigation in her cover story about Graham. I would have said “wrote about it brilliantly,” but I’d hate to be accused of bias.

Bush’s re-election has been one of the worst things to happen to this country since Jimmy Carter was in office.

– Jason Pye at JasonPye.com. Pye’s hackles were raised by Bush’s support of a bill that would increase the minimum wage.

I met Jason at the Peach Pundit happy hour last Friday. I didn’t see any hackles.

The AGMC exploits the desires of some of Atlanta’s gay men to get in a group and sing. Of course, it is also a means of hooking up with new partners and a great networking tool for them. They must pay excessive quarterly dues that almost completely supports the group and keeps them singing.

– The person who writes the blog Atlanta Classical Music thinks the Atlanta Gay Men’s Chorus is a rip-off.

    Hackles?

    Haha.

I thought hackles sounded better than ire.

Speaking of hackles, who knew that the Atlanta Gay Men’s Chorus could irritate someone so much?

  3. Ray Says:

For an entertainment group like the AGMC, there’s not a whole lot of large and high-paying venues where a Gay Men’s Chorus is actively propositioned in the Dirty South. If it’s going to continue running, then the money has to come from somewhere. Did the author of the blog exert account for that? This isn’t like the Atlanta Ballet – this is a voluntary performance group.

Unless there’s a previously-undiscovered scandal involving the lining of someone’s pockets with the money earned from playing venues, the members will have to continue paying “excessive quarterly dues” in order to provide entertainment. That’s a highly specialized chorus, catering to a particular group of individuals, which may not have a year-round need or enough protifable opportunities for a Gay Men’s Chorus.

I think my girlfriend’s cousin in that.

  5. Jason Says:

    Sorry…

    *is in that.

Well…I’m not sure what the author is talking about! We pay $18/month to sing in the AGMC, which is on par with what the majority of GALA Choruses pay (Gay and Lesbian Association of Choruses). This pays only a fraction of our annual budget of $300,000/year. I can tell you that nobody is making lots of money off the AGMC, and we try our best to contribute musically to the arts culture of Atlanta, and provide a safe/supportive place for gay men to gather and perform. We have done this successfully for over 25 years and lost an entire chorus of members to AIDS in the process. Still…we keep singing. Thanks to the people of Atlanta for supporting us!

What the hell business is it of any non -member what dues are paid by a private individual to be a member of a private group? I acan only assume that the AGMC is voluntary becasue Ihave never seen armed henchmen capturing young men in Midtown and speeding away in unmarked vans.

besides, name any group worth belongng to that isn’t costly.

Alarm bells go off when I see words like “excessive” combined with “fees”, “dues” or “profits”.

Sounds like the writer at ACM is jealous, threatened or closeted.
