Bald Republican courts Atlantans

RUDY GIULIANI AT OGLETHORPE: “I was worried you were gonna ask about Bernard Kerik.”

fall_peepshow2_03.jpg

GOP presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani delivered his “I was mayor on 9/11, so vote for me” speech to a room of 200 or so supporters and onlookers last Wednesday at Oglethorpe University. The two-term New York mayor is credited with taking credit for the city’s drop in crime during the 1990s.

Although Giuliani’s Atlanta visit came a day after his much-talked-about declaration during a Republican debate in South Carolina that he’s pro-choice, nobody actually asked him about abortion or whether he thinks the position reduces his chances of winning the GOP nomination.

Additionally, no one asked him why, after the 1993 WTC bombing, he still thought it wise to put NYC’s terrorism response command center in the WTC complex. Nor did anyone ask him about his proposal to add an unelected, 9/11-justified “emergency” extension to his second mayoral term.

If elected, Giuliani would become the first bald president since Ford and the first elected bald president since Eisenhower.

I agree, Giuliani should NEVER discuss the defining political event of our lives and his hands-on leadership in the wake of the most devastating terror attack in our history. Like wise he shouldn’t discuss how much safer the streets of NYC became or the cleanup of Times Square or any other positive events in that city for which he was responsible. In fact, he should only talk about how wonderful his Democratic opponents are, the peace loving actions of Islam and what a sweetheart OBL has become. Discussing his role in the WTC aftermath is totally over the edge.

You are also correct that keeping that locating the NYC terror response unit in the WTC was stupid. Any idiot could have predicted what happened, except none of them did.

While we are at it, we should evacuate all of those people responsible for coordinating our defense and security from the Pentagon. After all, what idiot would put such key people in such an obvious target. Ditto the White House and the Capitol, both targeted on 9/11.

Dale — Since you have a different take on Giuliani than I do, I’d like to know — what are some of the things he did on 9/11 and in the days and weeks that followed that impressed you?

On site all day every day for one. Management and coordinationof rescue, cleanup and recovery. A leader whose presence in the trenched on a daily basis inspired and comforted many people, both rescue workers, victims families and every day New Yorkers. Somehow found time to attend over 200 memorials for fallen firefighters, cops and otehr first responders.

Hardly a friend to Republicans, this quote from David Letterman in his first broadcast after 9/11-
“If you’re like me and you’re watching this and you’re confused and depressed and irritated and angry and full of grief and you don’t know how to behave . . . all you had to do at any moment was watch the mayor,” Letterman said. “Watch how this guy behaved. . . . Rudolph Giuliani is the personification of courage.”
