U.S. Social Forum comes to town

Thousands of activists from the United States and abroad will descend upon Atlanta tomorrow for the first U.S. Social Forum.

The event, headquartered at the Atlanta Civic Center, will offer workshops, networking and two concert stages for activists.

Among the key events:

Opening march and rally: 1 p.m. Wednesday, gathering at the State Capitol. Welcomes by Dr. Joseph Lowery and a representative of the Cherokee nation. March begins at 2 p.m. and ends with rally in Renaissance Park, Pine Street and Piedmont Avenue.

Opening ceremony: 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, Pine Street stage.

Workshops: 10:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m., Thursday-Saturday, various locations.

Plenary sessions: 6-9:30 p.m., Thursday-Saturday, Civic Center:
* “Gulf Coast Reconstruction: Challenges, Visions and Strategies,” 6 p.m. Thursday
* “U.S. Imperialism, War, Militarism and Prisons,” 8 p.m. Thursday
* “Indigenous Voices from the Heart of Mother Earth,” 6 p.m. Friday
* “Immigrant and Migrant Rights in a Global Society,” 8 p.m. Friday
* “Liberating Gender and Sexuality,” 6 p.m. Saturday
* “Workers Rights in the Global Economy,” 8 p.m. Saturday

People’s assembly and closing ceremony, 10 a.m.- 2 p.m. Sunday, Civic Center.
